We travelled by bus (1 Euro each way) from Nice for 45 mins. to reach this beautiful, fortified hill town which has been populated by artists but which is still absolutely fascinating to wander around. Nothing here is cheap and everything aimed at tourist spending but that does not detract from the old spirit of the place.

Footnote : the Sunday we returned home, Michael Winner had a restaurant review in his Sunday Times column on the Colombe d'Or hotel in St. Paul de Vence - whether you see his recommendation as a good thing or not is up to you!!

St Paul de Vence is indeed a beautiful hilltop village with lovely views over the surrounding countryside but is just too dominated by day tripper tourism to be enjoyable. Most of the tourists arrive in one of the many coaches parked around the village walls. The journey by bus was difficult. We had to stand all the way on the buses, the 200 from Antibes then the 400 from Cagnes sur Mare and back again. It was so crowded the bus didn't stop at all the stops. It must be terrible in the summer. We were disappointed and would have preferred to spend the day in Antibes.

St Paul de Vence is a beautiful medieval hilltop village not far from Nice or Cannes, and easily reachable by public busses. It is probably the closest of the walled villages to those tourist cities, and is given over to servicing the tourist trade. Lots of shops with expensive things to buy, aimed at the hordes of passengers from cruise ships who are bussed up there for an hour or two.

But the town does have an amazing connection with several major Impressionist artists having lived there. Marc Chagall (make sure you visit the Musee Chagall in Nice) is buried in the lovely little cemetery there.

We are travelling more slowly than many, and walked over to St Paul from Vence itself. The very helpful Vence Tourism Office can provide details on that and other walks. The walk is about an hour each way, and very steep in parts. Wear stout walking shoes, and take some water with you, particularly on a sunny day. In this way you get to walk past the front gates of some amazing villas up above St Paul.

There are also walks on the other side of Vence, towards Tourette-sur-Loup. They are also detailed on the Vence Tourism office's website. You can get quite spectacular views of the Cote D'Azur.

So, our advice is that, if you have a day or two, go to St Paul for sure, but also go to Vence, Tourette-sur-Loup, and St Jeanette - all hilltop medieval villages with nice shops, but (at least in Spring) far fewer American tourists off cruise ships!

This classic town for artist has become a bit of a turist trap. It is still a beautiful and unique mideval town but there are too many tourists and to many galleries and such.
