La Colombe d'Or is one of those long established restaurants that has it's own traditions and way of doing things. Couples sit side by side rather than facing. Food orders are taken by a man in a jacket, served by waistcoated staff, cleared by shirted staff. You sit in a room full of 20th Century original Art.
Overall the staff are excellent, confident and knowledgable.
The food is ordered from the large format hand designed menu and is unpretentious in cooking style, plain and letting the ingredients tell their story. The basket of vegetables that accompany the terrine is more than one person can eat and the left overs must generate the excellent potage de legumes. Prosciutto with melon is a plate of tasty ham and a melon. No small portions here.
Dorade Royale was delicious in its simplicity with sauce vierge. Pave de Boeuf a fantastic piece of meat served with a sauce flavoured with Roquefort.
Creme caramel a pleasant pudding, bettered by the almondy tarte.
House wine Cotes de Provence very acceptable and reasonably priced.
Overall cost about 90 euros per head with wine. Worth it for that special or occasional visit.
Book online by email. No menu visible from the outside so just take the plunge, you will enjoy!
