Le Mas Saint Antoine
Reviewed 20 July 2010

Mind that this BB is not located in the town. You can actually see the town which is on the opposite hill. That means you have to use the car to go to restaurant, for a drink or to shop. Not very convenient. The location is quiet, even though you can hear the cars from the near street, which is not very busy. House is charmantly furnitured with pieces which many are antiquities, the bad thing is that they smell that way, too. Our suite St. Pauloise did not get rid of that smell even after 4 days of constantly opened window. Than we got used to that. Our room was never cleaned in 7 days, which does not help the smell neither. On one hand we had privacy, but on the second, I find it weird for a property which marks itself with 4 stars. We had not asked for that, but that should not be the condition.
Anyways, we had quite nice stay there, the owner Maria is very joyful and beautiful person, very helpful and friendly. I have not met other French person that kind. And there were two other couples, who were returners, so I believe some people might like it there very much.

Dear Khatalina,

You are right, we are not a four star hotel, and don't want to be a four star hotel! We do own a B&B classified in France as "Chambre d'hôtes et de charme". We do have two bedrooms, two "suites" and one furnished flat. That flat has been classified "four stars" by the "Union des offices du tourisme". In France, there is no classification yet by the UDOTSI for the B&Bs. Sorry about that confusion.

On the other hand, people use to say that the "Suite St Pauloise" could be classified "Relais et Chateaux" but the price we rent it is much lower than Relais & Chateaux...

Thus, we do not pretend to provide the same service than four stars hotels (even if our rooms are equiped with air conditionning, new beds, TV and refrigerator). In order to satify our guests that usually want more freedom and independance, we changed ou service to "Summer flats" equiped with facilities to cook ans eat outside... and the house keeping is done at least every week at the end of the week.

Finally, regarding the smell of the products we use to clean up and polish the furnitures, I admit that the bee wax and lavandin we use may be quite unusual to you, but are probably much better than chimical products and fragances used in the hotels. You should have told us as we can only do something if we know that you are not happy with something.

Kind Regards.

Maric.

We were looking for a quiet and nice location on the Cote d’Azur, trying to avoid the more touristic and populated areas, but still convenient to explore the sea side and the small villages hidden in the hills.

We did not want to stay in a hotel as we wanted to have the possibility to cater for ourselves and did not want to end up in a very big resort. As it was only the two of us, it was also difficult to find a cottage with swimming pool to rent.

The Mas Saint Antoine was a great find. We booked the appartment "Les Pieds dans l'eau" which is composed of a main room (with a small – but well equipped kitchen, and a small but cosy living area) and a bedroom. We also had our own space outdoor next to the swimming pool, with a table which was great when we wanted to have meals outside. The apartment was very clean and well decorated. It felt very homely and authentic.

Marie-Claude and her husband were wonderful hosts. They know the area very well and were always keen to provide information on visits, restaurants, souvenir shops etc. Everything they recommended to us were places where they were enjoying going themselves and we have never been disappointed. In addition, they both were very available whenever we needed anything.

Despite being close to all amenities and St Paul, the Mas is very quiet. It has four other guest rooms but is sufficiently spacious so it does not feel crowded at any time.

I spend a lot of time scanning hotels before I finally make a decision to go anywhere. I found this charming country hotel near St. Paul de Vence and I loved the rooms on the website immediately and read about the owners being artists. So we went there and spent an amazing time in the romantic Suite Saint Pauloise, which consisted of 1 bedroom, very stylishly furnished, 1 spacious bathroom, kitchen, lounge area and an extra room. The landlady was indeed special and showed us her paintings and I got a great treatment by her daughter who is an osteopath. We loved the swimming pool and also went by car to the nearby sea. (A rental car is needed to reach this house).
It takes 30 min walk to the historic St. Paul de Vence on a hill and the views from the hotel are stunning! It is very quiet and serene. However, there are 2 huge supermarkets nearby so one can cater for oneself, if wished (driving distance). The French Breakfast is usually small, so I would not order it with the room. Its not too far from Nice, so restaurants are plenty there. Renoirs painting studio is also a mere 20 min drive. I can really recommend the hotel to South of France Fans, its an amazing base!!
