Chateau De La Messardiere
Ranked #3 of 73 Hotels in Saint-Tropez
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 29 June 2009

This is our third trip to St. Tropez and Messardiere. We still love this hotel. What we love about it is:

1. The location, being just a couple minutes away from the town.

2. The 24 hour hotel shuttle.

3. The beautiful pool which has a very quiet, relaxed, sophisticated vibe.

4. The prestige rooms with the huge seaview terraces.

5. The view while having breakfast on the restaurant's terrace.

6. Location again - just 10 minutes from Pampelonne Beach or 5 minutes from Tahiti Beach.

7. Pool again - sunloungers always available.

We will DEFINITELY be back again!

We were unexpectedly upgraded to a suite, with French provencal decor and a sweeping view of the port and surrounding countryside. We were unexpectedly upgraded to a suite, with a large bedroom, bath and full salon/living room. The pool is impressive for a smaller property and the grounds were immaculate. We were there for a wedding, and the food and wine served were top notch. The service was excellent throughout, from the facilities person through to the valets. The normal rate is quite expensive, so as you would expect, they do NOT try to nickel and dime you to death with surcharges. From the free valet parking to the free shuttle service, services were at your disposal. Fixtures and fittings were of the highest quality, from the Villeroy et Bosh sinks to the Frette sheets. This hotel is relatively small from a room count, but has the facilities, grounds and space of a larger property. It is on one of the premier residential streets high above the town of St. Tropez

A few quibbles that detracted from a full five star experience:
* The room was very warm on arrival; you would have expected a room to be prepped or aired out . Now, we are all conscious of wasting energy, but it seemed a little extreme.
* The patio furniture (with a fantastic view, and of the highest quality) was covered with pollen and debris on arrival. It was a very windy day however, but it looked like it had lasted longer than a few hours since the last cleaning.
* The phone did not work in the salon; one of the few signs of wear and tear.
These are very minor quibbles, however.

I stayed here with my husband during our tip to Cote d'Azur to celebrate my birthday in late summer 2007. I selected this hotel after reviewing all the reviews and hotel pictures, and everything was true. The hotel is more gorgeous in person -- pictures don't do justice. It is a small boutique hotel -- quiet, clean, with a gorgeous decor. I loved the location as well -- it is very private, located on a hill top and the hotel provides a shuttle service to the st tropez town and the beach. The pool area was absolutely perfect, located conveniently a few feet away from our room. We really enjoyed our visit to St Tropez, and we plan to go back in the future. And when we do, I would definitely stay here again!

La Messardiere is one of the very few places we love to re-visit,
on our previous visits everything was perfect, but on our last stay a few cracks were appearing.
We stayed in a Deluxe Room with sea view , walk-in shower in the bathroom, nice terrace with chairs and loungers ( bird drops on the loungers on arrival and never cleaned during our 3 night stay) , towels on loungers on day 1 , but not on day 2 and 3.
Shuttle service to the center of town still perfect.
I used to declare the bread on the breakfast buffet as best ever, but they changed their supplier or chef and the breads, croissants, petits pains are now well below average as well as most of the rest of the buffet, we noticed a very tired-looking fruit salad, probably from the restaurant trolley the night before, not fresh tasting juices and we even had somebody cleaning the floor while we were eating, restaurant staff seemed very surprised when we complained about it , but failed to apologize.
We still love the place, but the F&B manager should take some action.

If this hotel is listed within the top 5 hotels on Tripadvisor St. Tropez's list, that’s because it’s the truth. As you entered the front gate, you feel as if you have been transported to a private Chateau. Mind you getting here is quite convoluted. You have to know their exact location or you will get lost. Their reception area and lobby are spacious and filled with Moroccan style furniture; however, their rooms are completely chic, romantic, simple, and decorated with exquisite furnishings. We stayed in a garden room with canopied bed, which made everything so perfect for an unexpected vacation; the FRETTE bathrobes add to the luxuries among the luxuries that surrounds you. Since this is South of France, you could expect to see lavender and other herbal flowers planted everywhere in your garden. One thing you must do at this Chateau is to have dinner; it is one of the most unforgettable experiences you will ever have.

My wife and I (in our late 20s) recently stayed 3 nights of our honeymoon at Chateau de la Messardiere. The hotel is a good place to relax and rejuvenate if you have money to burn, and is only a short shuttle ride to town where you can enjoy the nightlife and restaurants for which Saint-Tropez is so famous. However, we did encounter a few issues during our stay that prevent us from giving the hotel a 5-star rating. Upon returning to St. Tropez, we would consider staying here again, but we also would look at cheaper options located in town.

The hotel is situated in a somewhat remote area of St. Tropez. It’s a bit hard to find, but signage is decent and if you have directions it’s not too bad. Bear in mind that the traffic coming into and out of St. Tropez during high season can be unbearable – when we left, it took us over 2 hours to get to St. Maxime (normally a 15 minute drive) and almost missed our flight. It was almost as bad coming in. The hotel is not walking distance to the town or to the beach, but there is a hotel shuttle that takes you to/from town (about 5-10 minutes away). I’m not sure if the shuttle also goes to/from the beaches. We found it very easy to use and always available without much of a wait (you simply call the hotel when you are ready to be picked up in town, and you go to the drop-off point which is strategically located in an area that avoids the horrendous traffic in town).

Check-in was easy, and we received assistance with our luggage. The front-desk person that helped us (who spoke excellent English and was very nice throughout our stay, as was the rest of the staff) gave us a brief tour of the hotel. Our room was great – spacious, flat-screen TV, and a huge balcony with a terrific view (see our pictures). We didn’t really use the balcony, though. We had breakfast there one morning, but ate on the patio (with the other guests) the other two mornings because it had more selections (including some excellent crepes). We also found sitting at the pool more enjoyable than laying out on the balcony chaises. The bathroom was terrific -- clean and spacious, with 2 sinks, bathtub, separate shower, and separate toilet.

One problem we encountered was the quality of the air conditioning. It was not great, even though we had it set to the coldest setting available. It was hot enough that we called to have someone look at it late the first night, and he agreed that it was not functioning well. He called someone else who looked at it and claimed that it was working fine. It eventually cooled down a bit, but not as much as we would have wanted.

Another issue we came across was the housekeeping staff. They didn’t come through our room until around 3-4pm, even when we put out a sign requesting service. At that time, we were returning from the pool, so it was quite inconvenient. We would recommend telling the front desk directly if you would like your room made up sooner. Housekeeping also did not respond to our request for two additional pillows, and they showed up at 7:30 for turndown service (which is when most people are getting ready for dinner). These issues would be minor at other hotels, but at $1000/night, we expected perfection.

The scene at the pool was pleasant. No rocking music, and not a ton of people (we were expecting a more Las Vegas-style pool atmosphere, which was not at all the case). The pool area is large and there are plenty of chaises. There are waiters to bring you drinks, and there is a small area for a poolside lunch (which was delicious). All of this came at a pretty steep cost, but if you’re worried about money, this probably isn’t a good place for you. We liked the pool area so much that we didn’t even go to any of the St. Tropez beaches.

Some additional pros: the hotel has free wireless internet, it was not flooded with tourists, and the gym was pretty large and quite nice (and free). Some additional cons: the hotel requires a minimum of a 3 night stay, which makes staying there even more expensive. It is an older clientele that stays there – 35 and over, I would say, so it’s probably not the best spot for young honeymooners. Lastly, we received 3 separate advertisements to test-drive the Audi parked in front of the hotel: one at check-in (which was fine), another slipped under our door (alright already), and another where they actually knocked on our door and handed it to us (ready to smash the windshield).

Overall, we thought the hotel was a relaxing place for a retreat. It is a good spot for wealthy travelers ages 35+ that want to stay in St. Tropez but avoid the crowded beaches and only go downtown for dinner.
