“Nice hotel, nice town, great view”
Reviewed 9 December 2013

Nice, clean hotel. Good beds, great bathroom. Pleasant staff. We stayed two nights. We didn't try the breakfast because it was a bit expensive and we're not great breakfast folks. We had the eastern end room on the third floor (No. 31) -- beautiful view of the park below with fantastic flowers (especially the abundant bougainvillea), the harbor, and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat across. Now, their third floor is our (American) fourth floor, and there's no elevator -- just so you know. They have no private parking, but we didn't have much trouble finding free spots on nearby streets. The main commercial port town center is only a couple blocks pleasant walk.
Great place!

Room Tip: For a view, try for Room #31. It has one queen and one twin. The walk up is worth it.

We stayed here for a week from 12th-19th October and were very pleased with our choice. Our room was #12 on the first floor - just above reception/breakfast area and had a large sunny balcony with a table and four chairs (the balconies are bigger on the first floor than higher floors but the views are probably slightly better higher up..)
We only had breakfast in the hotel on our last morning (it was very good, continental) but we did have several cups of coffee in our room/balcony. It was nice coffee and they only charge €2.80 a cup, which was very inexpensive.
The bathroom was compact with a very good, spacious corner shower, which had plenty of hot water at all times. Toiletries provided were soap, shower gel and shower cap. There was a tube type hairdryer in the bathroom. The bed was firm and very comfortable. Everywhere was spotlessly clean.
My husband had trouble accessing the free Wi-Fi for several days, which irritated him but he got it in the end..
I don't know how efficient the air con would be in very hot weather as we struggled to stay cool in October..
They have a lovely big fluffy ginger & white resident cat - Snookie - who liked to be petted when he was around on the pretty outside terrace at the front of the hotel.
All the staff on the reception desk were very kind and helpful - we would definitely stay here again if we return to Villefranche-sur-Mer. It's a 6-8 minute walk into the main harbour/restaurant area but it's a level, well-lit and pleasant walk along the water's edge.

This hotel is located by the harbour in a tiny French village - and a perfect base for exploring the French Riviera - away from the massive tourist crowds and subsequent extortionate prices normally found on the Riviera. Restaurant and shops are located within walking distance.

This simple marina-side Hotel in a fabulous setting overlooking the bay is a great 'find' and so convenient for the whole coastal area, with buses and trains easily accessed. Yes, we kept fit going up to the third floor without a lift (being rather advanced in years now!) but once there we could sit on our balcony and view the whole bay. Recommended to us by Dutch friends, who had enjoyed staying there with young children, this is a hotel we shall definitely return to when in the Nice area. It was a wonderful truly French start to a glorious month in Provence.

Room Tip: Access to the third floor rooms require a degree of fitness!! All rooms have sea views, I think.

We spent 2 nights at the Darse. It is in a good location, near the port with water views, between Monaco and Nice. Easy bus connections to both places so a car is not necessary. Parking is available on the street at no charge, but not reserved for the hotel. You just find a place. Balcony rooms overlook the port and we even brought in food one night to enjoy wine, dinner and view. Rooms are clean and large enough. Very clean. We did not have breakfast, which was extra, but had coffee we brought in the room, with bakery goods. Good stay.

Room Tip: Getting a balcony, water view room is worth the extra money.

Clean, spacious room lovely light and facing the harbor. Old style but comfortable with a buffet at 8 euros well worth it and much less expensive than other neighboring hotels. If this is not yet on Rick Steves, it should be.

If you stay here, remember this is a two-star. It is NOT a bed and breakfast (so don't expect much communication with the staff or management) it also has stairs and no elevator, no night time reception so if those things are important to you go elsewhere.

That said this hotel is such a good value, quiet, and a great price for the fabulous Villefranche sur Mer location. The internet works well (unlike another much more expensive hotel I stayed at in the area) and the rooms have good heating, hot water and bathtubs.

My only suggestion is that they replace the very old and scratchy linens and the flat worn pillows. Other than that, a very nice stay and good value for the money.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a view. well worth it and I believe all have terraces

We stayed 8 nights at the hotel, paying euros 95 in Sept, then 85 in Oct. The hotel doesn't have its own car park, but we never had any problems after 5pm each day in finding a space outside on the road. The location of this hotel is everything, in that the view from the balcony is just lovely (we had a double sea-view room on the 2nd floor). The breakfast (at euros 8.50 per day) is a simple but more than adequate buffet, consisting of fruit juice, fruit, cereal, bread rolls, cheese, croissants and jam. The room was basic but clean; shower facilities were ok, the only downside was the bed which was a bit hard for us. The hotel has no lift, so if you are elderly or infirm you may find the steps up to your room tiring, but Villefranche is quite hilly with lots of steps which is fine if you have good health. The hotel is located in the Port of Darse, so overlooking the boat harbour, and is a pleasant 10 min stroll into Villefranche Sur Mer where you'll find quite a lot of restaurants and a few shops. We had quite a lot of lovely meals in Villefranche, with higher priced meals and drinks on the front. Would recommend that you go and explore and find restaurants where locals eat and where the food is better and more reasonably priced. Villefranche Sur Mer, like most of of the Cote D'Azur strip are just busy and touristy so expect that things aren't cheap. Would recommend you visit Menton Garavan and Menton (which are easy to get to on the train from Villefranche).
