“Charming but not for everyboddy”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

I liked this hotel. It offered phenomenal value. It was exactly what I was looking for but I understand it wouldn't be the right hotel for everybody.

NOT the right hotel for you if:
- You are looking for a luxurious hotel,
- You have two kids, three suitcases and a stroller. The hotel is in an old traditional house with no elevator,
- You want a quiet retreat. The rooms facing the street can be noisy, given the central location.

The right hotel for you if:
- You are looking for a decently priced hotel in a central location,
- You want to experience the Mediterranean charm of a Moroccan owned hotel,
- You like simply furnished but stylish rooms,
- You want a small authentic boutique hotel.

Service was very friendly.

We booked a night based on the reviews from tripadvisor and sadly it totally led us astray! The hotel is definitely not in a good location. In order to unload our bags we had to circle the block three times and throw them out of the car! This was really difficult with a child. The owners were very nice and helped us with our bags which was great. However, the room was not clean. The linen was fine but the floors and the bath were definitely not clean. We did not shower. The noise from the street below is extreme. You can also hear the other guests. Definitely couldn't fall asleep until well past 1 am. I appreciate the owners trying to start a new business but would not recommend at all.

We LOVED le Ryad. We stayed there in July of 2012 actually, a part of our 3 week honeymoon in France. Marseille is a totally overwhelming city, to be sure, and if you're expected to stay at the George Cinq, well -- stay in Paris. Le Ryad is totally gorgeous in decor, bed was great, bath and toiletries were unique and comfortable, great water pressure, and THE BEST breakfast of our entire stay in France/Amsterdam/Belgium. The garden is utterly calming, it's like a little oasis in the middle of the city. Would absolutely stay there again if we're lucky enough to get back to bubbling, bristling Marseille.

We travelled around France for several weeks in July & August camping, we stayed at Le Ryad for one night to recharge & sleep in a real bed and what a welcome we received. The owner was genuinely lovely and very helpful, even upgrading us because there was vacancies in the hotel. The room was beautiful, big and airy and the bathroom was well decorated and in keeping with the Moroccan theme of the hotel.

You take breakfast in the garden and everything is freshly made that morning. What a find!! We would go back in a heartbeat.

Stayed one night, good location... Just ignore the prostitutes outside all night.. Bed was very comfortable but the whole hotel could do with a lick of paint was all a little tired.
Overpriced for what we got.. There was a very weird shower which wasn't a shower was a bath in a strange cave very difficult to get in and out.
I would recommend if it was half the price. Ok breakfast abit dry.
Very friendly however.

Hôtel L, Propriétaire at Le Ryad Boutique Hotel, responded to this review, 30 July 2013
Dear Amy and Roger B

Thank you for your contribution on Tripadvisor.

About the price of the superior Room Ahlem you booked, Le Ryad is about 10% less compare to the average 2013 prices of Marseille. Half price for a superior room of 27 squares, Wifi, queen size bed, Flat TV, Coffee Machine in the city center of Marseille doesn't make any sense.

About the batharoom, you can read in your confirmation letter that our superior room are equipped with a bathtub, not a single shower, and the "strange cave" is in fact just curve respecting the typical moroccan style.

Sincerely yours
La Direction

I don't agree at all with the rave reviews of this hotel: the room on the fourth floor was small, ugly, worn and dusty, resembled more mid-range hostels in Indonesia than a mid-range hotel in Europe. The lack of wifi in the rooom was a minus as well. No elevator. If lower floors are nicer, be sure you don't get placed to the fourth! The person at the reception desk was extremely helpful!!

Room Tip: at least if you're given a room on the fourth floor, go elsewhere!

This is quite a unique hotel, full of character and interesting design - way different to the run of the mill and somehow so fitting with Marseille itself, a fascinating city.

We stayed two nights in very spacious superior doubles on the second floor. They were decorated in a Moroccan theme and were airy, bright, light and clean. Very comfortable bed and quilt bedding, although the bedside and other lighting was too dim for reading. We were there on a Wednesday and Thursday and both the hotel and neighbourhood were quiet - we certainly had good sleep.

Bathroom good although the shower-in-bathtub had no curtain or glass, but no great problem. Toilet in a separate room, which was good. The water pipes are inclined to be fairly noisy however.

Wifi was strong in the rooms and thankfully secure as well, allowing us to catch up with our finances. The rooms also had A/C and minibars (which were quiet, no refrigerator noise) but unfortunately there were no in-room safes.

Service was very good, including whisking bags up and down the stairs without asking.

The hotel is surprisingly well situated - 10 minutes solid walk from the Vieux Port, close to the metro but away from the heavy traffic of Marseille and quite handy to the wide range of restaurants in the Cours Julien area (the hotel-recommended La Cantinetta was excellent). We did not find the working girls any problem at all; they kept to themselves and were there only part of the day. Part of the texture of staying in a real city rather than a tourist park!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the rear courtyard seemed the best pick
