Hostel London Connection
Reviewed 7 May 2014

Absolutely nothing to recommend about this place except for the price. But for a barely higher price you can get way better in other Marseille hostels with services, friendliness, cleanliness, free internet, space, comfort, security — a breakfast, come on!

Shabby appartment, untidy and dirty, which is actually the owner's flat in a gruesome building. Not even sure it's totally legal, and they will do strange things with your credit card.

No storage, no tables, no chairs, absolutely NOTHING in the rooms except for beds shivering like hell, low ceiling, smelly sheets and a way too thin mattress. No breakfast, every single service charged (wifi, late check-outs, bag storage...).

Owner and managers weren't there when I arrived; another traveler opened the door and I had to wait for an hour before checking in. The walls are covered with authoritative rules written in a poor English. Curfew at 11pm. No shoes allowed. The common room plus kitchen is the bare minimum and of course dirty. Only one bathroom, shared, that you can't lock.

The owner isn't going to do the least bit to make this a nice play to stay and make you feel welcome. I can't believe they're even allowed to run this business.

Let me just preface this review by saying I am a grown man, and at times I didn't feel like one staying at Hostel London Connection. Being told there was a curfew and I had to be at home and in bed at a certain time was torturous especially when on vacation! Sure I can understand the no alcohol but seriously it was not an ideal situation. The accommodations were lame and if it wasn't for our cool roommate we would have paid a ridiculous amount just to use the WiFi. Sadly our trip to Marseille was last minute and this was the only option available to us for a couple nights. Although we eventually found a small hotel style place that was much cheaper for a private room than the Hostel London Connections dorm rooms. It's sad when it's cheaper just to show up and look for a dingy hotel style place than to stay at a "hostel". I wouldn't recommend staying here, although sometimes when you have unexpected travel delays like me you can't avoid it. But you can bet when I go back to Marseille I won't be staying here!

First of all it was very hard to find this place, for me it's not hostel, it's normal apartment in building and the owner put into rooms bunk beds. Bathroom was very dirty Owner is not speaking english, so we communicate using google translator. When I came the owner ask me if I can put off my shoes. You cannot take shower after 11pm If you decide to go there take bill from owner as a confirmation that you stay there, because if not he is writing to booking that you did not show in his place!! He did that in my situation, and in my opinion he want another money from me. After ten days I realized that he took also money from my credit card, so I paid for 1 night two times. I wrote to booking.com and they give give me money back, so be carefull. Value for money 0!!! Don't go there if you don't have to!

I was so disappointed when I read the reviews on this place AFTER I booked it! I was hoping people were just exaggerating. Lets run through the positives: 5 minutes from train station. That's all. Kind of not positive though because it's in a rough area. The hostel was WAY overpriced. It's pretty dirty, the rooms are tiny! Crammed three story bunk beds in each room. No lockers, wifi costs €3, you can't walk around in shoes, 12am curfew, no food in rooms, no alcohol on the premises, I could go on and on. The toilets flush button is broken. There's mould on like everything in the bathroom. The guy who runs the place is iffy. Please don't stay here it's not worth it.

Stayed here for one night...too long. One of the few hostels I could find in marseille which had space so thought I'd give it a go. As other reviewers have said, this place is about a 3 bedroom apartment filled with bunk beds.

No common areas, really cramped hallway and rooms. If you like space then this hostel is not for you. 3 euro for wifi.

Sheets are obviously not changed too often, I chose to sleep with a sleeping bag. The air conditioner was great for most of the night before it was turned off (I suspect by the owner as he keeps the control in his office). The bathrooms are disgusting. Algae or some organic scum growing in the toilets and I recommend avoiding touching any of the shower walls.

I avoided spending any unnecessary time in this hostel. I suggest checking in, leaving straight away, and returning to sleep late at night.

I think the owner sleeps in one of the bunks in the 16 bed dorm, but slept in his office the night I stayed... Kind of weird.

25euros is too much for a hostel of this standard, should be more like 15

Awful !! Not to go !! We were welcoming with a rude guy telling us that he might not accept us since we were a group of 4 ! ( pretending that this clause was written in the hotel description). The hostel is totally crap (actually a flat turned into a hostel). Three tiny rooms with up to 16 beds and insufficient air conditioning. WC and shower in the same place and only one shower working properly (the second is just a pipe). We found this hostel totally not worth the price paid!! Honestly not to go!!!

Pros:
Near rail station
Within walking distance to the port
Cheap
Meet lots of people

Cons:
Sheets don't get changed between people, no pillow covers
Extremely cramped rooms (triple bunk beds)
Bathroom/toilet without any ventilation, looks like under construction, one shower doesn't work
Not allowed to walk with shoes, only barefoot (see who wins foot fungus lottery), also as a result foot smell everywhere
Wifi not free (3 euros)
Bag storage not free (3 euros)
