Ibis Marseille Centre Prado Velodrome

If you are looking for somewhere cheap to stay overnight in Marseille, just a room to sleep in and a quick coffee and some bread and/or cereal for breakfast, with no frills, then the Ibis Marseille Prado Velodrome fits the bill. The rooms are clean but basic, the breakfast is also fairly basic but edible. There is secure parking and, apart from checking in and breakfast, most things are self service.

It was perfectly adequate, and if I was simply looking for somewhere to sleep that was not going to break the bank I would go back again. I have stayed in worse places and paid more for the privilege.

We stayed here as a stop over from Milan to Spain. We were tired from driving and it had everything we needed. Clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Nice quiet room overlooking the garden. The only problem we encountered was that the parking was full so we had to park in a car park 1 block away on a busy main road. They quoted us 12 euros for the night and when we were leaving we had to pay 18 euros because there was no one at the parking garage to help us. This was the only disappointment. We even found a fab restaurant in walking distance. Massena Cafe. We had a great meal and slept well before the next leg of our journey.

Right next to the tube stop, it is a great place to stay if you want to go out and explore the city or head to the football at the Stade Velodrome (about a 15 minutes walk away). Downside, though, is that is in need of some TLC. All looks a bit tired and could do with some love. Oh, and if you want breakfast get down there early because when it is gone, it is gone.

We have stayed in this hotel during the event which was held in the nearest conference centre (MEMC), and from this point of view we appreciated that the hotel was just in walking distance from this centre. Also grocery shop was very close, the same as metro station. The hotel is also in quiet locality, back part facing to the yard shared with the quiet hospital. The room was small and simple, but sufficient for sleep. The breakfast with enough variety of choices. I would recommend the hotel for explorers of the town / visitors of conference centre for overnight sleep due to good locality, quiet area good value of money.

Room Tip: rooms facing to the yard

I've used this hotel several times for stays ranging from 2 to 10 days, over the last three years. I'm giving it 5 stars (5 circles?), not because of its level of luxury, but because of how convenient it is and because of the value you get for your money. Rooms are clean and comfortable, with air conditioning - the hotel underwent some heavy refurbishing about 3 years ago, I believe. It is very well located, close to bus stops and subway stations, one block away from the Prado main street. The hotel is within walking distance (10 minutes, if that) of Castellane, one of Marseille's main squares. Walk an extra 10 minutes and you'll reach Prefecture and the Rue Saint-Ferreol, a pedestrian street with a plethora of shops. The full walk all the way to the Vieux Port (Old Port) will take you about 40 minutes. The hotel is easily accessible by car, and it's a 5 minutes drive to the highway. This means you can rent a car (The "Europ Car" rental agency is nearby) and drive off to explore the area around Marseille: Aix-en-Provence is 30 minutes away, and there are a bunch of Calanques (rocky coves typical of the area) to visit nearby (Cassis comes to mind), besides those of Marseille itself (Sugiton, Sormiou). The hotel has its own secure underground parking lot - although it does have its tight turns, I had no problem maneuvering my bulky 4x4 in there.

At the time of this writing (July 2013), a room with a king sized bed was 80 euros. It's cheaper than that if you book through the Web - I got it for 65 euros. The breakfast buffet is very decent, an all-you-can-eat with croissants and chocolate croissants ("pains au chocolat"), cereals, cheese, ham, etc. You can also have lunch or dinner on site. Speaking of restaurants, the neighborhood has a lot to offer: the Prado boulevard has a few nice restaurants, and the Rouet street (Rue du Rouet) as well. One block from the hotel, at 113 rue du Rouet, is "La Rizière" (formerly "Binh An"), a family-style Vietnamese and Thai restaurant with authentic cuisine where the friendly staff takes good care of their customers. You can get a full meal there for 15 euros. To summarize, you will not be pampered in this hotel (no spa, no satin bedsheets) and you will not enjoy picturesque views from you window, but it can serve as an excellent base for your exploration of Marseille.
