Reviewed 25 August 2012

We have just checked out today the 25th August 2012. Our room was small but had a terrace. The hotel is a bit of a warren, but very smart. Lunch outside was delicious and dinner was very good indeed though the Anenome was over fussy and ultimately pointless! What surprised was the scruffy looking terrace where we ate our breakfast. It simply had not been swept or cleaned in any way by 9:30am. We paid the equivalent of the Greek national debt for one day and for those prices (€950), we expect EVERYTHING to be wonderful. But it wasn't.

Attention : This is a review for the HOTEL and not the restaurant ! Because the restaurant is GREAT and truly deserves its 3 Michelin stars.
On the contrary, the HOTEL should be withdrawn from the "5* Relais & Chateaux", because except the price which is 5* (440€ for a double room), the standard of the service or the quality/cleanness of the room are close to 3* max. First, when we arrived, no one asked if we needed assistance with our luggage. The front desk clerk (a man) did escort us to our room on the 1st floor but did not bother helping my husband with our 3 bags.... He was only holding the room key whereas my husband was having the 3 bags by himself. This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE for a so-called 5* Relais & Chateaux ! The room itself is fairly standard. The bathroom is a disgrace with broken tiles and a tiny triangle bath with no shower curtain/door. So when you shower, the bathroom is all wet.
For sure, we will never go back.

Localisation: excellent

Room: Suite Pagnol with its 785 square feet and its 5 windows overlooking the sea, just amazing and worth every penny.

If you need to do a blow-dry though don't expect to use their wall-attached hair dryer! Indeed, you need to constantly keep pushing a button to keep the air coming out. Guess the guy who took the decision to install those cheap contraptions never had to dry long hair. STUPID!

Service: smiling and inviting check-in staff simply above par and 5* for sure.
No concierge, under par for such a level of stars.
No valet to carry my heavy luggage on a Friday "because it is his rest day" so we are sending a tiny 100 lbs young lady to do his job, way under 5*, ridiculous and not acceptable in such a hotel. So guess what? I had to carry my own luggage. They did offer me free tea to compensate otherwise their breakfast is 35 euros ($50, pretty stiff)

The valet, in any case, was terribly moody, not only with me but also with other guests. Not a 5 star level.

Wifi: terrible. Don't even plan on working from your room as you will constantly lose your connection and will have to constantly re-enter your credentials.

Grounds: well manicured, But the pool is VERY small. Don't expect to do your laps.

There is a "rocky beach" right under the hotel but it is filthy dirty so don't expect to lay your towel here. Just go with your flip flops, swim in the sea and come back to the pool to lounge a few minutes and dry.

Will come back but just for the view and the amazing room and will ignore the rest.

Room Tip: Choose the Pagnol suite to really get the Petit Nice treatment.

Spent the last two nights of our South of France trip in June in Marseille. I was expecting great things of this hotel and have to say the visit did not live up to expectations.

Marseille itself we found very confusing and once we arrived in Marseille it took us over an hour and a half to find the hotel even with our sat nav. We went round and round and were about to give up and drive back to the airport to return our rental car when we finally managed to get on the correct road. We were so relieved to arrive at the hotel that we decided to stay put for our day in Marseille.

Our welcome was ok, not particularly friendly and we were not told about any facilities of the hotel. We were then shown to our room, which was not in the main hotel building. Our room was fine, nothing flash, although it did have a beautiful view of the bay, a comfortable bed and a very nice bathroom. Breakfast the next morning was a basic enough buffet, but fresh and nicely presented. We spent the day by the pool which is quite small but it did the job. We ate lunch on the terrace which was very tasty and enjoyable. That night we ate in the restaurant, which I will review separately.

We discussed with reception what time we would need to leave the next morning to get to the airport, and I asked what time breakfast started. I was told breakfast was from 7 am which was good as we were leaving at 7.30. When we arrived for breakfast at 10 past 7, it was only just being set up so we had to leave without any breakfast as there was still nothing ready by 7.25 when we left. Also because we were leaving early, there was no one to bring down our bags and take them to the car park. As we were in the separate building, this meant taking the bags down the lift, up steps, across a lane, down more steps and up to the car park. In fact there was no one on reception, I had to hunt around to find someone to check us out. I do feel that at this level of hotel, these things are quite basic and therefore I feel the hotel is expensive for the level of service provided. Internet was free which was good and whilst it worked well for my husband for some reason I had to keep getting new codes for my phone to work.

Overall I think it was expensive for what was provided and the staff could be much more helpful and friendly. Would not go back to stay in the hotel.

We are members of Relais Chateaux and we book our trip around their hotels. We were very excited to stay in Le Petit Nice because this hotel has three Michelin stars. Marseille is a city to avoid, and everyone who knew about our trip, told us not to go to this city. Truely, you do not need to go to Marseille EVER! In spite of knowing this, we booked our stay at Le Petit Nice anyway to experience the famous restaurant. As soon as we got there, we realized we made a mistake. The receptionist greeted us with so much indifference. The chef was at the reception and did not even sy hi. We are great fans of famous chefs, and we're so excited to meet him. The rooms were not ready for an hour and a half. We had lunch at the terrace which was fine, but extremely expensive. She didn't even come to tell us that the rooms were ready. the a/c worked poorly on both rooms. The restaurant was closed, because we arrived on a Monday. We were to stay two nights. The other receptionist, a man, was even worse. My daughter came down with towels and he screamed at her to take them back. I have to add my daughter is a 20 year old....not a little girl. I must say that everything they did made us realize we were in the wrong place. we decided to skip the gastronomique dinner to leave next day to another Relais Chateaux where we were completely pampered. Mr. Passedat, you don't deserve the stars you have been given for your hotel. Sad stay indeed.

Room Tip: Don't go!

One of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed in, with outstanding views , clean, bus access, next to rock beach, walking distance to sandy beach. Marseille itself is somewhat dirly, lots of graffiti and homelessness in the downtown area but the hotel is outstanding. For the expensive cost of the hotel, a free shuttle to the airport or at least the bus or train station downtown should be included but is not.

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights in mid March. He was on business. We chose this over the more center city hotels. The walk into town was 30 minutes, bus or taxi also readily available. The staff was helpful. The beds were comfortable, not hard as usually found in France. Each night with turn down we received lovely treats that were too hard to resist. Unfortunately, we did not eat at this Michelin #3 rated restaurant.

Room Tip: Plan ahead, this is a small boutique hotel.
