“Great location makes for easy walks around Marseille town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2009

Rooms are OK and clean, and beds comfortable enough. Receptionist also speaks decent English. First time visitors may find it hard to locate the hotel as its down a narrower lane off a busy shopping street. Location wise though its hard to beat. Its only a short walk to the Marseille port area, where all the (fish) restaurants are located. It is also on a nice pedestrianised shopping street, with little cafes nearby for breakfast/coffee etc. Its not quite a cosy romantic place, but more suited for those travelling with friends who want a convenient, comfortable and affordable base in which to explore all that Marseille has to offer.

Sadly we were staying for only one night but can endorse all previous positive remarks made about this hotel and those running it. We were especially pleased to find such a large and comfortable double bed and the recommendation to go to nearby Rue Sainte for somewhere to eat was excellent. We very much liked the 2 lunches we had at La Table a Deniz.

  • Liked — Personal assistance.
  • Disliked — Nothing was unsatisfactory

We stayed at the Hotel St. Ferreol in Marseille on Sept. 28th. It is a 3 star which usually translates to average. We only had one night to spend and I wanted to see the Basilica and be close to the water. This hotel is very close to the Old Port of Marseille so the location was perfect. It is a little tired looking in decor but clean and comfortable. What set it apart and earned it a 5 star rating in our book was the service. Right from the start the staff was very helpful. They directed us to the Petit Train at the waterfront which took us up to the Basilica. They recommended an area for restaurants away from the tourist trade but within walking distance. They assured us they would wake us up in time for breakfast and ordered a taxi to the airport for us. Early in the morning the front desk called to alert us that we would have to leave much earlier than we had planned because the President of France was arriving for a conference and the roads to the airport were being closed. They also called the taxi for us and helped us load our bags. We really appreciated their concern. This may not be the fanciest hotel in Marseille but it has a wonderful staff.

  • Liked — The location and the service
  • Disliked — Decor could use some updating

Great location, very close to old port, rive neuve and Cours Julien which has some great restaurants. Rooms were small and musty, but opening a window trook care of that. Bathrooms, oddly, had been very nicely renovated - guess they haven't gotten around to the rest of the room. would recommend overall as a good value.

We have just enjoyed a few days in Marseille at the Hotel Saint Ferreol. Very good location near to the old port, shops and within easy walk of all transport. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful giving us any advise on Marseille. Would definately stay again. The hotel offered all at a very resonable price. Highly recommended.

  • Liked — Very comfortable and near to the centre of Marseille
  • Disliked — Would have liked a double bed as advertised

We are fairly experienced with French hotels (30 years of annual holidays) and St Ferreol was typical - an elegant old building with a too small lift. Very friendly and helpful reception who knew we were arriving, room very clean and just enough space for a 3-night stay, but we are only average height! Good wardrobe space for a change and the rather quaint bathroom worked very well and was a good size and clean. Breakfasts were excellent - freshly squeezed juice and really good baguettes, great coffee and as much as you could want. Everybody that we met appeared to speak good English if that's useful for you, with good recommendations for eating out.. But beware that Chez Vincent does not accept cards! We found walking around at night no problem with the usual caveats, and the hotel is well-placed for the port and eating out. Nothing was too much trouble, and we would happily visit again.

Hotel Saint Ferreol was the first hotel for my wife and I on a 3-week tour of Provence. On this trip we made more effort than usual to select our hotels for their ambiance and location, in addition to cleanliness and reasonable price. After studying the guide books, TripAdvisor, and Venere.com, Saint Ferreol was still not our first choice, but others were full. However, our 2 nights at Saint Ferreol proved the hotel not to be just a "second best" choice, and we would gladly return.

In addition to the hotel's being clean, nicely decorated, and run by a very friendly English-speaking couple, its central location turned out to be better than our first choices. It was located on a pedestrian street just around the corner from Gallaries Layfayette (the taxi had to drop us a block away), a short walk to the harbor passing interesting shops, a short walk to a Metro station, and in the neighborhood of many pleasant, moderately-priced restaurants where the locals ate. In fact, each room had the owners' list of favorite and to-be-avoided restaurants, and the owners were pleased to recommend others and to make dinner reservations and call taxis.

The continental breakfast was served in very pleasant surroundings, and included fresh squeezed orange juice and soft boiled eggs.

  • Liked — Pleasant ambiance, great location, and friendly & helpful staff
  • Disliked — Very steep and narrow stairs from the front door to the second floor lobby.
