“Good, but definately felt like a budget hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2013

I know this is a Ibis Budget hotel, and it did have good attributes ... I liked the wood-beamed high ceilings, which made the room feel bigger than what it was. (I believe that this room was in the building that was originally an old ship captain's house). We were there for 3 nights and it was very quiet at night. The free wifi was really fast. The location is good, plenty of restaurants and bars close by, and an easy stroll to the port. Our small window overlooked a courtyard but the guests weren't allowed to use it, as it was private. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were the flattest I've ever seen. There was a few hooks and a small hanging rod to hang clothes but could have done with more hanging space. No in-room safe. The shower fitting didn't hold the handshower in place so it would fall off occasionally...I got good at catching it before it hit the deck (or my head)! And the shower screen was too small to stop water going all over the floor. No shampoo or conditioner provided. I didn't mind this hotel but it could have been a lot better with a few improvements, such as providing more clothes storage space, shampoo/conditioner, tissues, better quality towels than the thin ones provided, and better pillows...and fix the shower fitting! Advice for travellers who want a decent breakfast...probably better to get the hotel breakfast deal. (From memory, I think it was an extra 6 Euro). We spent many a countless hour looking for cafes that served a decent breakfast other than a croissant and beverage with not much luck. The French don't really do breakfasts like the English, Americans or Australians do. Just saying...

Room Tip: Ask for one in the old ship captains house which have some character and high ceilings

We had to go to a marriage in the South of France (Sanary sur mer), but chose to stay in Marseille.

This review will be short: this place had the best price/quality ratio. This is NOT a boutique hotel, but a good bed, we had a room with a great view on the old harbour of Marseille, and parking the car was possible in the underground parking lot for 10€/24h. It is a great hotel, with a basic affordable breakfast buffet. Flatscreen, shower with green/red leds indicating water temp, 2 towels and soap, and this for 61 €/night.

Do not forget to click YES below if my review & pictures were helpfull to you.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor harbour side

Room was not clean, and even with a 'non smoking' sign it was stinking cigarette.
Staff was eating in the reception and provided not accurate information.
Bed was not comfortable and dry walls were so thin that we could hear the family that was in the other room.

I found the hotel excellently situated and good value for money. The room furnishings are a bit Spartan--I found the "stool" that was the only chair in the room a bit uncomfortable to perch on while trying to work at the "desk". Also most of the room space is taken up by the bed, which was comfortable.

Hotel as expected: simple but clean. Problem is that the air conditioning is only for HOT temperatures. It doesnt have an option to cool down the room. And if you open the window, the gnats infest the room. So in summer this is a huge problem.

The location is brilliant, absolutely nothing shady about the surroundings, lots of nice restaurants, bars and attractions just around the corner. The rooms are clean with comfortable beds and good showers. Wifi is free and fast. The price is good.
So why only a three star-review? Because the hotel for some reason makes a real (and silly) effort to feel like a BUDGET hotel. No shampoo or bodysoap in the bathroom. You have to pay extra to leave your luggage there for the day after checking out. Etc.
With some small adjustments this would feel like a real bargain, now you leave with a feeling that you paid 60 euros for something very basic.

The ibis Budget in Marseille is a short walk from the Metro station located at the harbour, The metro is 3 stops fro the main rail station.
If arriving by car the parking is limited at the front of the hotel if you are in a van when arriving you may stop the local traffic for a short time. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel is well located for access to the harbour and restaurants.
We would stay there again
