I stayed in the Hotel Du Sud for three nights , the location could not have been better , very close to the Marina , and shops , restaurants etc. The room was extremely small , but more than adequate , with a good bathroom. The lift has to be the world's smallest , and you still have to negotiate a very steep flight of stairs to get to the reception area. However , the hotel is still good , and value for money , though I would give the breakfast a miss , and eat out.

When you arrive at Hotel du Sud, you immediately encounter what I think is the only real drawback - a long flight of steps up to reception. As we had heavy luggage, this was a small problem, but we managed. The elevator is very small - we had to send our cases up to our room one at a time, unaccompanied. Only a minor problem though. The staff were very friendly and helpful, answering any queries we had. While the room was small, it suited our needs, and at around 70€ per night was very good value. The WiFi actually worked! The location was brilliant - only one street away from the old harbour, which means only a street away from a host of restaurants. I would happily stay there again, but I'd take lighter luggage!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that doesn't face Rue Beauvau. You'll get a lousy view, but it will be quiet.

it's very well located especially when you are in Marseille, location matters. it's 1 street away from the vieux port. no danger in the neighbourhood but you don't have to be surprised if you hear loud drunk people or drug consuming in public.
the room is not sound proof but safe. clean.
but i was given room 27 which gives to the street and just as equal heights as the street lanterns which is very annoying but there's the curtains.
the lady at the reception was very warm and welcoming and friendly.
the breakfast is fine.
advice: choose higher floors for the room.

I travelled to marseille with 5000 other rugby supporters for a European semi final . I booked this hotel the day I arrived . It is very central , down next to the main port. Staff were friendly and room was clean but small . It suited me fine. You get what you pay for . Nice hotel. One small thing, the lift is tiny ( felt like a coffin) so wouldn't suit all. 5 floors up. Had a stairs . Nice hotel

So we were on our way home, flew out to Montpellier on Sunday (thank you easyJet) but there are no return flights to Gatwick until the weekend. A bit silly, but hey, an opportunity to explore. So we chose a modest hotel, close to the old harbour. Small room, small beds and the extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work. Staff were helpful, when needed. Boy, the stairs are steep!

My husband and I have just spent a night in this hotel which was a back-up plan for other accommodation which didn't eventuate. Having paid for the other accommodation we didn't want to outlay a lot of money again. We got a rate of 60 euro for Hotel Sud and have to say it was good value for money. We arrived in Marseille at 9am and were able to access our room straight away. The reception staff were extremely pleasant and spoke English which is not a necessity but very helpful for someone with not a great knowledge of French. Our room was small and outlook not good but it was clean, good bed and clean and modern bathroom. Breakfast was served in a room off reception and at 9.75 euro was more than adequate (juice, yoghurt, croissant AND bagel, preserves and tea or coffee). The cost of breakfast was possibly a bit high but the convenience of having it in the hotel was worth it.

The location of the hotel is perfect. It is a minutes walk to Vieux Port and there are almost too many restaurants around it. Difficult to decide where to eat.

We were also able to leave our luggage in the hotel while we did some more sightseeing on the day of departure.

I would say to anyone visiting Marseille, especially if only for 1 or 2 nights, try this hotel. For the money it is hard to beat.

As others have noted the rooms are quite small - this is not a problem, they are cozy and have more or less everything needed, there is amazingly even a foyer to the small room. The location is great. I would like this hotel very much if it were about a third of the price. I guess I would prefer France several decades ago, most everything there seems way too costly...
