L’Hippocampe is a very good traditional fish restaurant in the old harbour of Marseille. Good choice in fresh fish, and of course one needs to taste here the local specialty bouillabaisse. I went here twice in one week, because it is good quality for acceptable prices.
Yes, there are of course tourist here, but many more locals, which is a good sign. Very friendly staff and management, nice desserts and adequate wine list (do try the white or rose Cassis). I certainly will return here!

Convenient harbor front location serves a decent rendition of traditional Marseilles Bouillabaisse.
While not exceptional it would provide a fair sampling for a traveler short on time time to search out the best.
This dish will vary from Port to port as when properly done the chef relies on the local fresh catch. In this location several species of fish, (no shellfish or Prawns) which in my sample had good texture and seemed fresh.
They offer a traditional long version @ $55 euro with 2 person minimum or a shorter single serving @ $36 euro. I suggest the latter as it is identical (except for size & accompaniments) and an ample serving.
House wine is decent.
Service is good.

Estimate Client ;
The Bouillabaisse is perhaps diferent from port to port but this is a dish originary from Marseille. And you have eaten the real one in our restaurant who is one of the three of all around the port to buy his fish directly to the fishermen of the port of Marseille.
If you had in another restaurant a fish soup with prawns and shelfishes it was not at all the bouillabaisse composed exclusively with fish and nothing else...
Sincerely yours.

Had a delicious lunch - massive prawns with mayo and lemon, then mussels in Roquefort sauce. My daughter had steak. Way too much to eat, and it was all delicious and they were good enough to let us take a doggy bag home! Lovely, lovely!!

If you eat no where else, eat here! The fish is amazing and the wine is a balanced list.
The service is good and is family run with husband, wife and son.

I chose this restaurant to tick 'bouillabaisse in Marseilles' off my bucket list. The bouillabaisse had a nice flavour and was served with fillets of four different fish. One fillet had a few bones which was unpleasant but the dish tasted good and the different textures of the fish made it interesting to eat. The dish was accompanied by mini toasts with a very strong alioli with were delicious when the alioli was spread between two toasts and dipped in the liquid. My partner had moules farcies that she also enjoyed.
