“Don't stay here if value sleep”
Reviewed 4 December 2013 via mobile

Do not stay here on a weekend. We arrived on a Friday night after a long car trip looking for a quiet place to rest our head after some boulibaise. There was a party (which is a frequent occurrence on a weekend I am told) in the bar downstairs, we were told the noise would not travel to the room (apparently the quietest in the building) or continue after 10pm - this was a blatant lie, in the room it felt like we were in the centre of the party until 1am. When we asked for a refund to move hotels this was refused. If you want to party the night away then this would be great if not avoid this hotel at all costs!

Read a review by the Guardian regarding top city boutique hotels and Mama Shelter seemed a good option and price.

The location is pretty central. The interior very funky, minimal, clean and stylish. The check-in process was quick, easy and the stunning french girl on the desk couldn't have been more helpful. We hadn't realised we'd booked a weekend in the city during the french music weekend. She pointed us in the direction of the lanes, west of the port. The music genre changed as we turned every corner. The atmosphere was buzzing with great tunes, DJ's, street food and locally made cocktails.

The hotel is very modern, clean and minimal. I'd definitely stay here again, or an alternative Mama Shelter located elsewhere. Ideal for a city break!

We just completed a nine day tour through France and wanted to cut corners where we could. In Marseille I was seeking a super clean and modern "aLoft type" of property. Mama Shelter is absolutely no frills. There is not even room service. However, if you are looking for an immaculate room with a great bed in a good (not great) location then this is your place, hands down. The best part of all was the bill.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard. Really pretty sunrise.

You know that Mama Shelter is not going to be your average hotel, just starting with the name! They seem to be pulling off a trick that many hotels try but very few succeed at: appealing to a broad age market. From the 20's to the 60's, people who value that also-rare combination of fashionable uniqueness with old-school professional management will almost surely like Mama's. (That combination, incidentally, isn't all that surprising. The head of the enterprise, Serge Trigano, was once chief executive of Club Med - North America -- the same Club Med that his father founded.)

Read the other description here and you'll get a good feel for what's in store. Perhaps the best surprise is the price; compared with other Marseille hotels, this is indeed a bargain. Get it while it still is!

Room Tip: The restaurant/club on the ground floor is really jumpin' on Friday and Saturday nights. Request...

My husband and I, and one other couple stayed here for two nights. We REALLY liked Mama Shelter. It has a very funky hostel vibe about it, so we were surprised when we saw people of all different ages checking in with us!
The hotel is about a 15 min walk to the main port. But to be honest, it was SO NICE to get away from "tourist central". It felt VERY safe, even walking at midnight home from dinner in other parts of the city.
The staff are really nice and always happy to help with restaurant recommendations which are off the beaten track.
The rooms are modern, with polished concrete floors and strange plastic masks on the wall (probably not for everyone) - but it is fun and clean, with lovely bath products and the beds are SO comfortable.
I would recommend not paying for the buffet breakfast. It is pretty expensive and you can easily just walk down the road and pick up a lovely croissant and coffee where the locals go! But do definitely hang out pre-dinner at the bar area downstairs - good drinks, great atmosphere and good service.

This is a concept hotel whose design aesthetic is a bit bohemian chic with state of the art technology/wired services in the rooms. It is about 20 minutes walk outside the tourist areas of the Vieux Port in a residential area of Marseille. There are ample restaurants and cafes in the vicinity though. The hotel restaurant/bar was hopping each of the three nights (over a weekend) I was in residence and it seems to draw a trendy crowd. The food and drinks were very good and the bartender likes to put on a show a la Tom Cruise in Cocktails. The rooms are clean and spare but will all the needed essentials. It is reasonably priced and a worthwhile destination if you are visiting Marseille and don't want to be in the midst of the touristy areas.

One of the nicest hotel rooms ever. So much light, so fresh. All in all very nice, trendy hotel with friendly and helpful staff.

First seems to be a bit oddly located, but in reality perfect location – in case you don't need to stay at the touristic centre. Just be aware, the hotel is quite easy to miss when approached by feet.

Room Tip: Top floor has a nice loft-like feel, and lot of light. At least rooms that face Rue Château Payan.
