“5 star rooms with 3 star service”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

It looks very stylish and the rooms are a good size but it suffers from poor service. The breakfast buffet quality is good but it was frustrating trying to catch someone's eye to get a basic cup of coffee. Glasses constantly ran out. Eggs ran out. The buffet area was cramped. It took more than half an hour to get a simple omelette. When we went to the pool (via a confusing 3 lifts) we were told we couldn't have a locker because they were saving them for non-guests who paid to use the facilities. We argued and got 2 (between 4 of us) to discover the pool was completely empty. In the bar it took 10 mins to get a drinks list and 25 mins to get a drink (in a half empty bar). The coffee in the room for the drinks machine wasn't replaced. They called us to ask if they could collect the room service plates. We had not had any room service. Too many service errors for an expensive 5 star hotel. Not good enough.

We spent two nights at this hotel, after staying in a tiny, terrible hotel room in Paris. The Hotel Dieu was a huge relief! The hotel is sparkling new, decorated in the currently trendy, black-white-gray color scheme that looks hip while being as inoffensive as possible. There are enough thoughtful details (lace designs etched into glass, for example) throughout the hotel that make the design interesting. (Check out the ceiling lights in the restaurant, shaped like golden plate covers with spoon-shaped holders for the bulbs.)

Our room was spacious and comfortable and had everything we needed and wanted (except a view of the harbor and a balcony. Next time.) If I had to quibble, I'd suggest adding a few hooks in the bathroom for towels and swimsuits to dry. And the cold water on the 7th floor is a mere trickle, so filling the tub takes awhile. But the shower is heaven and there is space and luxury galore.

The swimming pool is tricky to get to, a matter of three elevators and a staff escort for part of the way, but well worth it. On our first day it was warm and delightful. (The next day it was cold and less delightful.)

Breakfast is about 35E, but excellent: a comprehensive, delicious buffet with perfect scrambled eggs; regional fruits, cheese, and meats; many choices for breads and pastries; and lots of other goodies. The young woman who brought us tea and juice was absolutely charming and spoke beautiful English.

When I needed to get to our room quickly after breakfast one morning, we discovered that all three elevators were not working. A groundskeeper showed us to the outdoor stairs and we ran all the way. That was the only experience that surprised me in this 5-star hotel.

There are tables and umbrellas to sit outside in the evening. Elegant and romantic.

We ate in the Brasserie and it was fine, even though there was a fish "milkshake" on the menu. I tasted it, it could have been worse. Dessert was wonderful.

Room Tip: Ask for a view!

Hotel is beautiful and very clean, the Old building was renovated wonderfully while still keeping its originality, at night it looks amazing
Good Food, very comfortable rooms and Good service (except for the night service at the bar)
hotel has a small access road from the street which makes it very peaceful and quiet while still central and accessible to old Marseille

Room Tip: Chose a high rooms facing the port if you want a nice view

Despite an initial poor experience, mostly due to initial opening problems (c/f my initial review), I kept visiting the hotel from time to time and I have to say it is now really a great place to stay in town.
The location is magnificent and the staff had made tremendous efforts to overcome the rough beginnings.
The service is now in the five-stars range and everything and everyone is dedicated to make your stay truly unforgettable if you are a guest or just stopping by for a drink or a meal.
The terrace offers the best view on Marseille harbor and Notre Dame de la Garde hills, and at the same time, is by far, the quietest place in town to come and have a drink, even late at night, which is not so obvious in Marseille.

Can you imagine the thoughts that would have gone into converting an old hospital into a super luxury hotel? Well i do not need to imagine , I had the privilege of experiencing it! A beautiful drive takes you to the entrance of this master piece. The staff at the reception was super efficient and it did not take more then 5 minutes before I was escorted to my room. The rooms are tastefully done with all amenities and what is really amazing is the big terrace which is part of the room over looking the harbor. The bathrooms are big and spacious, one does not feel crammed. Unfortunately I had only an overnight stay, but given the next opportunity I would certainly stay longer and enjoy the beautiful place and the spa. A little expensive but worth every cent that one spends.

Had a 2 night stay at this hotel on business. The room was fantastic, spacious, comfortable and best of all Quiet. I had no view despite being on the top floor, but to be honest I didnt get much time to enjoy that sort of thing anyway. Free Wifi, comprehensive television selection in English (at last why cant all hotels in europe do this) Breakfast was good, staff all excellent. No chance to sample restaurant, although we did have some Bar food the first night as the restaurant was booked out by the Arsenal team. This food was good but very hard to justify the price, event being a 5 star hotel. Thats my only gripe. Recommend a stay here anytime.

Room Tip: My room was on the top floor to the right of the hotel. Very quiet but overlooked a derelict buildin...
