“Amazing views, very comfortable hotel!”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

We spent one night in a room facing the vieux port. Everything was amazing, from the service to the views to the quality of the room. The room was exceptionally quiet and spacious. The bed was extremely comfortable. The hotel is in a convenient location and just a short walk from the metro station.

My wife and I stayed here because it was in a good location to do what we wanted to do in the city. It is near the harbor, which allows you to take the numerous ferries to the archipelago just south of the city. The inside of the hotel is clean and modern looking. When you step out it has a great view that allows for a great view of the city. On a clear night, you can see Notre Dame lit up. The inside of the hotel has a great gym and pool. The service was great and the staff was very helpful.

There are a few things everyone should know about this hotel. The hotel is up a hill that you have to climb unless you are in a car. It was tricky for me after a night of wine drinking. Also, the hotel feels the need to be surrounded by gates. Not sure what has happened in the past, but I guess it could be handy. One of the doormen mentioned that their could be trouble if Algeria lost their match.

Room Tip: Get a room on the front side of the building on the seventh floor for a good view of the city.

What's not to like. This is a seriously impressive building with seriously well designed rooms with a modern feel, and I personally received nothing but excellent service.

Buy your cigarettes outside though as at €12 over the bar they are a tad expensive, as is the breakfast (despite its quality and the vast number of choices available). However, it is a five star hotel so I wasn't really surprised at the prices.

The TV system is a bit of a pain having to wade through, but to complain about it would be splitting hairs.

The hotel is beautiful and centrally located in Marseille. The view from the terrace is breathtaking and the interior is modern and very well-appointed. Our trip started on a pleasant note when we got a free upgrade for one of the rooms we reserved (we were two families). However the service went downhill from there. We arrived at 1:30 pm and could not access the second room until 4 pm. We immediately requested a crib for our daughter but got first a pull-out bed that would not fit in the room and then had to wait another hour for a crib. Thus, we were not able to put our daughter for a nap until 3:30 pm. Waiting for the crib we decided to go for lunch at the restaurant of the hotel. Unfortunately it was understaffed and we had to wait for 45 minutes before getting 2 cold entrees (we were discouraged to take warm entrees as it would take much longer).
So magnificent hotel but not the top notch service you would expect from a 5 stars hotel and that we experienced in other Intercontinental hotels before.

The exterior of this Grande Dame is magnificent, the terrace breath taking and the lobby is nice, if a bit overblown (matters of taste, of course).

Check in was swift and cheerful, we declined an £80/night upgrade to a balcony room. Passing to the interior, we became a little disorientated in a maze of identical corridors before finding our room.

The room was decorated in 90's business style, small and inadequately furnished with only one comfortable chair and one desk chair, so I can't think how we could have eaten a room service meal there. There was not enough space for our bags (two flight cases and a back pack) and no additional rack was brought. Seriously slack service. The bed was large and very comfortable indeed.

The bath is massive, so big that you can't brace your feet while laying back and keep slipping down. No handles or nonslip base either.

There were only 2 coffee pods provided, no hot chocolate, and no water bottles offered. Having travelled far, in high temperatures, I was expected to pay £5 for a tiny bottle. No biscuits, chocolates, fruit, nothing to welcome us. Penny pinching.

Each time you switch on the TV you have to pass through half a dozen pages of language options to find english channels, with no means of setting a preferrance for the duration of our stay. A single menu page would suffice. No ipod docking station either.

The turn down service was half hearted, the coffee pods were not replenished. That evening, I asked in person at reception that our coffee be topped up and that some additional pods be left, but nothing happened. I asked again the next morning but, on returnng from our day, only the initial 2 had been replaced. I called reception, they asked how many I needed, and I asked for 4. Five minutes later, house keeping called to ask what I needed. I explained again, and hung up.

Five minutes after their phone call, a young woman in front of house uniform appeared at our door asking (in French of my non-French speaking husband) what we wanted. I was attempting to nap after a long day in the heat and really didn't need this nonsense over a handful of coffee pods. She appologised and fetched some coffee.

Finished? No, five minutes after this, the house keeper arrived with a basket full of tea and coffee. She seemed quite agitated and, honestly, so was I. On the second turn down we got two bottles of water! Absent on both arrival and first evening.

The terrace bar is special, in the evenings quite romantic, and the accoustics pick up the noise of the forecourt fountain in a delightfull manner. Service was slow here on both evenings. They don't leave out menus so there is a first wait for a waiter, a second for him to fetch a menu, a third for him to come back to take the order and a fourth for your order to arrive. These waits were long ones.

On our last evening the lights went out (we thought they had blown a fuse) before a waiter appeared to tell us that the bar was closing. We declined the offer of a last order, asking for the bill. Some minutes later a second chap came over and repeated what his colleague had said. We asked for the bill again.

We waited, waited, rolled and smoked a cigarette, and waited some more. Staff were busy around the bar serving area, shutting down for the night. Eventually, I got up and walked the 10m to the bar to sign for our drinks. The waiters are charming and well turned out, but the system lets them down.

On departure, the young woman at the desk enquired about our stay, so I explained what had happened and she comped our 50 euro extra's bill for the second day. That was appropriate and kind. However, it should never have had to be done.

4* room with confused and annoying service.

Oh, it's a nightmare to access this place on foot. Banks of steep stairs or a 1:4 curving driveway with no pavement. No good for anyone, let alone those less-able. Maybe a golf-cart service?

We stumbled out of our taxi and into the hotel looking like hobos after spending a week backpacking through Provence and were still met with a very professional and warm welcome. The concierge was especially friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and the front desk staff happily assisted us in upgrading our room to a beautiful harbor view on the 7th floor. The room included a private furnished patio with an absolutely stunning view. Our room was efficiently customized to meet our family's needs by making the two beds into one big bed, and providing a crib for the baby, complete with a stuffed animal. Room service made a mistake on our breakfast order, but sent up the correct order unbelievably fast (and the food was delicious)! We also enjoyed having drinks on the terrace in the afternoon. While the staff never batted an eye at our athletic apparel, we noticed some eyebrows raised by the other guests who were more formally attired (so pack something nice to wear if you want to fit in with the crowd).

Room Tip: Spend the money for the harbor view because it's worth every penny.
