The hotel is located outside the centre of Marseille, in a residential area in the middle of other houses. It's about 15min drive to one of the starting hiking points to the Calanques. So a car is essential to get there and to go around. Only drawback was that it kept us from fully enjoying Marseille at night, due to difficult driving conditions in the city. On the other hand, if going to Marseille with a car, the best is to stay away from it's busy streets...
Our room was large and tastefully decorated. With the bathroom and the bedroom as in one large open space and the toilet with it's own separate room. There was also a small private terrasse facing the garden. There were only a few things i didn't like: One was the floor, which i personally found very cold and the shower which didn't close making it cold and letting water escape outside of the shower.
The breakfast was very good! With fresh pressed orange juice, tea, coffee, good bread, croissants, etc. It was served out of one of the buildings in the garden, but we could eat outside or take it to our room.
The staff was nice and provided us valuable information on good restaurants in Marseille.
All in all, the experience was nice.

We spent two nights at this small, secluded hotel and were totally thrilled.
The staff are wonderful especially our waiter Damien.
The rooms are SPOTLESS, well equipped and really comfortable, all the lower level rooms have a private terrace.
The grounds are well maintained and there is a lovely pool, garden and terrace to relax in as well as a library inside.
Breakfast is a little sparse and unfortunately no other meals are available but you have the whole of Marseilles about 20 minutes away.
You really must have a car as it is a little out of the way but that is what makes it so much more pleasant. There is secure parking on the property, which in Marseille is very comforting.
Thank you for a very pleasant experience. Janina

Room Tip: Room 7 & 8 have fairly private terraces and sun most of the day

We found 96 based on reviews, we stayed because of the charming and courteous staff, and owners. We wish it had been longer. Our room was bright, cheery and clean, and the bed was oh, so comfortable. Alice, the co-owner, and Damien from the staff were amazing at making us feel welcomed. The pool was really beautiful and calming. We only needed a restaurant, so we never needed to leave. It was a great value for the area as well.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel 96 the last week of July, 2013. We read all the earlier reviews and decided it was exactly the place we were looking for, away from the city, so we could relax towards the end of our 3 weeks trip in Europe. So all review are correct. It is in the remote location and you need a car to make things easier and to save time if you intend to travel around the area. But it is such a pleasure to be back at the hotel after a long day of sightseeing and just relax by the pool and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the hotel. The breakfast was excellent with homemade jams and yogurt and the very best selection of croissants and bread. Great coffee and American size coffee mugs! :)The weather was excellent and we were able to enjoy our morning coffee and breakfast outside on the patio overlooking the pool, flowers, etc. The restaurants are quite far, so we only went out to eat one time, and twice we had dinner delivered to the hotel (from a great Italian place Emilio) and had our dinner outside on the same patio using silverware, glasses, drinks provided by the hotel. We loved our room with private patio overlooking inside yard (Room #1), the bed was very comfortable, the softest white towels, great shower, etc. The owners were very helpful and friendly and yes, Damien is great! In overall, it was a great stay and a perfect ending to our trip. Make sure to read the reviews and know what to expect. We loved staying in Hotel 96! Atlanta, GA USA

The rooms are impeccable, with walk-in 'wetroom' shower in an open plan. Bed is ultra-comfortable. The hotel area is walled, with a swimming pool and pleasant sitting out verandah area, trees and lawned area. Very easy to relax here. However the location is fairly remote, being better for the calanques than the city. We did not hire a car and found our way round Marseille and the area perfectly well using the RTM transport system. Two bus routes pass close by, and it is a pleasant experience if you want the challenge! However the buses stop after 9pm. Combine this with the fact that there is no dinner service and dining out becomes the most difficult part of the day. In fact we walked up to Les Baumettes (Chez Zé restaurant), and into Mazargues on two nights. 15 - 20 minutes walk that's all. We didn't mind but, many will want to have a car.
The hotel is brand new and some of the concrete is only just dry and some still needs painting. I thought that some parts looked a little unfinished. The pathway from the park area, for example, is bare concrete. A warm coat of terracotta paint would make the scene more Provençale I think.

There are some very good bikes to hire - go visit the calanques, but they are steep! I found the hosts pefectly nice, they keep a professional distance, but have a great intern called Damien, who is extremely helpful, welcoming and friendly. We felt he was the magic ingredent and when he goes someone similar probably needs to be found as he maintained a very happy and warm-spirited environment going. It will be a lesser place without him.

Overall a very pleasant stay
