“Not What I Was Expecting (Sep 2013)”
Review of Old Town

Reviewed 18 September 2013

The phrase 'South Of France' brings to my imagination chic and classy. Not Toulon. Although on a Sunday there is a marvellous fresh food market until 1pm for the locals the town itself appeared grubby and shabby. The lamp posts were dressed with beautiful hanging baskets of flowers, but this was the only part of my visit that was easy on the eye. I agree with other reviews that there seemed to be suspicious groups loitering around side alley ways, and I instinctively knew things were not so safe on this Sunday morning. I would not recommend, but glad I had an opportunity to have a look around.

Something for everyone here. Great shops (French & American brands), restaurants and scenery. We spent several hours browsing through the various streets.

The old town is situated between the Stade Mayol and the naval base. Extensively bombed in the second world war it has now benefitted from some tasteful regeneration. The area supports a lively daily market and has quite an arab flavour about it. Worth exploring but do not wonder off alone at night. Safe during the day and generally also at night. Hidden little squares with cafes.
