This is my favourite lift for hiking in Chamonix. It takes you up from the base in Les Praz de Chamonix to a midpoint on the south-facing side of the valley. From here you can walk across the valley at various heights, up to points like the Lac Blanc, or down to Chamonix or Vallorcine.
We continued up the lift system onto the Index chairlift, and walked across the top to Lac Blanc - there was still a lot of snow, even in June! Bring a camera as the views are really superb. You also need good walking boots, and poles are advisable.
We walked back down via the Chalet Floria, instead of taking the lift, and had omelette and salad in the flower-filled terrace, overlooking Mont Blanc and the Aiguilles de Chamonix, before returning to the valley floor. It's about a 20 minute walk back into Chamonix, but there are buses from the lift base.
