“Good value, non-chain hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2009

I was staying at the Hotel de L'Arve this week, unfortunately to attend a friend's funeral.

Given the unpromising circumstances, I was really delighted with the hotel. It is the kind of slightly quirky old-fashioned hotel where the rooms are all a little different, and there's no chance at all of room service.

However, for the price of €88 (it's peak skiing season) I had a well-heated room with a balcony (overlooking the little Arve river that runs through Chamonix); plenty of hot water in the bathroom; free wi-fi in my room; and BBC1 available on the TV.

The location in a small cul-de-sac off the town's main shopping street means that everying in town is just a couple of minutes walk from the hotel, but no traffic noise. The hotel's breakfast is only €10, but I was just as happy to have a coffee and croissant for €4.5 at a fancy patisserie down the street.

I was initially a bit worried about booking this hotel (a recent review mentioned unpleasant smells) but was absolutely not my experience, and I wouldn't hesitate to return to this hotel with my wife under happier circumstances.

Nothing wrong with this hotel at all, it just annoys me that on tripadvisor people seem to rave about hotels that are just perfectly adequate- as was the case here. Our room was small, and the breakfast was simple, but when paying 80euros a night for a double room during winter in the centre of chamonix, what else do you expect?

No, it's not going to re-define your understanding of what 80euros can buy, but equally you're not aggrieved to hand over the sum at the end of the stay. It's a well located base for skiing on a budget, it's not the Ritz-Carlton.

Would I stay here again if I was on a tight budget? Probably yes- there is little else available in such a good location at the price. Plus the room was clean and the water warm (although the shower leaked badly).

Hopefully this review will go some way to balancing out the exaggerated comments left previous which make the place sound like a palace. It's just a decent 3 star hotel.

Great 3 star quality hotel. Exactly what you'd expect for your money. Simple clean rooms with modern bathrooms. Great little Sauna on the 1st floor. Breakfast was continental style and plenty of everything. Location at top of main street has ready access to everything town has to offer, but quiet location with good car parking. Easy to access from main road. Going back in March 09

The Hotel de l'Arve is located in a great position within Chamonix town. It is situated along the river and is a very short stroll to the first bus stop serving the slopes in the area. It is in a quiet part of town but close enough to get to the lively night life.

The hotel is skiing typical - basic rooms but plenty of hot water and heating. We went for the half board option and the meals were varied, I would say adequate rather than exciting. Again breakfast was adequate.

A positive downside was the lack of after dinner coffee. This was available at a charge which seemed penny-pinching.

The staff were friendly and polite and the room kept clean. The hotel boasts a fitness room which is a bit of an overstatement.

All-in-all I would recommend this hotel and I would use it again. A particular advantage for us was that the hotel would allow booking by the day - most other hotels in the area will only book Saturday to Saturday, which did not fit our need.

Jan 3rd, London

Aftyer reading all the reviews I wonder how the hotel changed so much. The only good thing we found about it was the location (very central Chamonix).

As we walked in a strong sewage smell hit us and followed us through the hall ways (worst in the elevator) and into our rooms.

Some days it was so strong we have had to keep windows open and considering that there were -10*C it wasn't so pleasant. We stayed in rooms 32 (1st floor) and 12 (secoond floor). We strongly advise to avoid them.

Chambermaids only cleaned the room between 15:00 hrs and 17:00 hrs which is not great when you return to the room and expect a quiet afternoon or nap.

Breakfast from 7 until 10 but we also advise to arrive in the breakfast room no later than 7:30 otherwise all you will eat will be left overs. It was very poor containing one kind of salami and one cheese, some yoghurts, and a few kinds of croissants and eggs. By the way the omlette was absolutely dreadfull!!!

Being here in Dec the access alley was never, ever cleaned which made access in and out of teh car park very difficult. Even walking on the alley was quite dangerous. We found it very funny when one of the hotel employees was spreading salt from a saucer (approx 100 grams :) ) on the street.

All in all if you are looking for a good location but no services and comfort the hotel is worth it, otherwise avoid it unless you enjoy strong sewage smells.

This traditional 37 room alpine hotel has to be the best value in Chamonix. Our room #51 cost 84.70 Euro including taxes for three adults. Ample free parking is included, breakfast is 10 euro per person extra. The entire hotel is non-smoking, but that didn’t stop them from placing a large open wood burning fireplace in the spacious and well appointed lounge. Prices start from a low of 61 euro for two, with 15 euro extra per adult. Children 3-10 yrs are 10 euro, but under 2 are free.
It is the ambiance which makes the difference. Situate on the River Arve, but set back from every major roadway, this place is an oasis surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. Clean modern and newly renovated, the front desk is staffed 24 hours. Internet is available for a small fee and wifi is available free. There is a supermarket and laundry in a small indoor mall next door. The centre of pedestrian only Chamonix is an easy five minute walk away. The hotel building itself is historic dating from the late 1800’s but nothing inside suggests its age. There are open stairwells and an elevator, sauna, fitness gym, and reasonably laid out indoor climbing wall with a two storey vertical ascent. On the main ground floor, there is a handy ski room adjacent to the main lobby and even a topographic 3-D model of the surrounding hills; a games rooms boasting a pool table (pay as you play), various board games (free), and lots of tables and lounges for a relaxing après-ski . There is a modern bar adjoining the reception area, and a separate dining room.
But it is the rooms which really impress. Large and spacious, carpeted and well furnished, bright and well lit with plenty of modern lighting, it is hard to believe the price. All rooms provide mountain views, modern windows, and authentic exterior shutters. And the rooms are quiet.
Our room had a supersized full bath with tub, somewhat Spartan in appearance, a tube TV with remote featuring a full complement of satellite tv channels, including CNN. Every hotel can have its quirks and this one was no exception. Our super-sized bathroom had a window, to the bedroom! Check out the photo to see the somewhat quaint wood-shuttered viewing portal with little hearts carved in it. Maybe this was the honeymoon suite but the view is of the toilet! Almost charming… or fetish… or something!
Inside windows aside, we did scout a few hotels in the area before settling into this one and the price point makes this an incredible bargain. The hotel website has a convenient reservation system which allows you to determine the cost of your room for any given day and a monthly calendar provides colour coded price at a glance seasonal and holiday rates. Half board is also available but with the abundance of fine places to eat in all price ranges in Town, you might best consider eating out.
Chamonix is a wonderfully compact ski town with something to offer in all seasons from shopping, to eating, to night-life, to sports. L’Arve is THE place to stay in Chamonix if value for your money is a priority.
Very highly recommended.

We selected this hotel because it had the best reviews on TripAdvisor within our budget range and looked central yet quiet. We were right! Booking was easy and the communication was good. The location is superb, right in the centre of Chamonix, yet by the river and with no traffic noise. The room was 'compact' but comfortable, the bathroom was great, we had a balcony area and just along the corridor was the gym/sauna which provided additional break-out space. Breakfasts were good, we enjoyed waiting for the egg boiling machine to ping while looking up at Mont Blanc for glimpses of the top. Yes, altogether a very good value stay for a late season weekend. Staff could not have been more accommodating - they allowed us to use the gym/sauna on the final day, which meant we could go for a good walk then come back, shower, change and re-pack before leaving for the airport. That made a huge difference and allowed us to make the most of our time in Chamonix. The lounge areas are really nice, too. Well done, Hotel de l'Arve!
