“Fantastic, friendly, accommodating, generous”
Reviewed 13 March 2009

I booked this Hotel from a recommendation given by the Tourist Info in Chamonix. Not having stayed in Chamonix before I was at a bit of a loss as to where to book especially due to the diverse nature of what was needed. The trip was planned to celebrate my Wife's birthday (a significant one!) and I needed accomodation for a group of about 14 friends, some excellent skiers, some never ski'd before. The mix of rooms was also tricky (singles, doubles, triples) as it was difficult to get confirmation on who was coming - the hotel were excellent pre-booking, very helpful and patient (Valerie answered Emails promptly - I later learned Valerie is the owner). They also helped with local recommendations for lunch and dinner bookings.
When we arrived we were able to check-in early and the man on reception (Désiré) called and confirmed all the local eatery reservations I had made as a matter of courtesy (very useful as my French is very poor). The rooms were exactly as you'd expect from a mainstream hotel in a ski resort (i.e compact) but well furnished, clean and in good condition. We had read reports on Trip Advisor that the breakfast wasn't up to much and at 10Euro per person per day extra we were prepared to be eating out, however we booked breakfast early for the first day so we could get out on the slopes without the hastle of finding somewhere else. We were pleasantly surprised, a slelection of different fresh breads, fruit, yogurt, cereals/museli, bacon and scrambled egg, the only criticism, and it's a small one, was the coffee wasn't up to much - put it this way, we had breakfast there every day.
I would highly recommend this hotel as a base for a ski trip. It is right in the heart of Chamonix (so a walk to either of the main lift stations) and Désiré will make you very welcome.

Like all hotels, this has its good points and bad points.

The main bad point is the size of the rooms. Our room was small and with very little storage space. We'd turned up with some walking kit (probably not unusual in a mountain resort, I'd guess) and there was simply not enough storage space in the room to put it away, so most of the kit had to live in our bags, which in turn had to live on the floor in such a way that it was a costant struggle not to trip over them. They do have a separate room forn storing skis and ski boots if you're there for that purpose, but as we weren't I can't comment on what it's like.

The main good point is the location. It's very central in Chamonix, with a huge choice of bars, shops, and restaurants all within a very few minutes walk. If your room is on the right side of the hotel, you also have a lovely view of Mont Blanc.

The staff were mostly friendly, polite, and helpful, although they'd get more marks for service if they'd dealt with my request for storing valuables more helpfully. Our room didn't have a safe, and I asked if I could store some valuables in the hotel safe. The man at the reception desk sounded very surprised that my room didn't have a safe (seriously, how hard could it be to know whether rooms have safes in your own hotel?) He said I could leave valuables in the hotel safe, but I'd have to do it later in the day. Luckily we were travelling with some friends who did have a safe in their room (I don't think their room was a different class of room than ours, it's just luck of the draw whether you get a safe or not) and they looked after our valuables for us.

Breakfast was OK, and there was a very limited choice of hot food in addition to the usual selection of bread and pastries. It was probably better than I expected for this class of hotel, and you certainly wouldn't go hungry, but nowhere near the standard you could expect in a reasonable 4* hotel. Drinks rather disappointingly came out of a machine: artificial-tasting orange juice or vending-machine-standard coffee.

Personally, I thought that at 125 euros per night, the hotel was a bit expensive for what you get, but I've not stayed in Chamonix before, so maybe it's just an expensive town.

We stayed in the Vallee Blanche for five nights, arriving 4th July. This was a late booking and to be honest I was quite glad to get any accommodation. Lets get to the positive aspects of the hotel:

Location

On the negative side:

Not good value.
Staff were neither helpful nor unhelpful, they just didn't seem to care about the guests.
Breakfast was terrible. Coffee from a dispensing machine and tiny, poor quality croissants. Not French breakfast as we know it.
Decor very tired.

There is no shortage of accommodation in Chamonix and I am sure anyone who was better organised than me and booked with a little planning could get somewhere more attractive.

We arrived into Chamonix, late on a Saturday night looking for a hotel in June and most of the hotels were closed down for the season (or renovations). Luckily, someone pointed us in the direction of the Hotel La Vallee Blanche and it worked out great! The price was 72 euros for a double room (the least expensive room on our trip) and the surroundings were gorgeous! We had a rushing river right outside our windows (which is great white noise for sleeping) and mountain views from the room as well. The hotel is very centrally located and was a 2 min walk from several resaturants on the main street. The room had an "alpine" look and was very clean. Our bathroom was also very clean -- with no mould (as in previous reviews). The breakfast (which was an extra charge) was also quite adequate for the price -- and had eggs and bacon (not just rolls and jam). Overall, we thought very good value.

Good, basic hotel with good quality food. Breakfast was normally cold but evening meals were well above average and of a good variety. Located within a very short distance from the nearest lift which takes you to the main ski area. All staff were English, so not really a 'French Experience'. Rooms are very basic but acceptable. If you like a soak in a bath after a day on the slopes, as long as you are not above 4'0", you will be fine!

My husband and I went to Chamonix to begin our trek of the Tour Mont Blanc to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We'd booked this same hotel last year, but had to cancel at the last minute when my mother in law passed away the day before we were to leave. They did not charge us any fee for last minute cancellation under those circumstances. We re-booked for this year and found this hotel to be lovely. We didn't care what the decor may have been - it was clean, neat and well-run. It was not "posh", but quite comfortable, very close to the town centre, the staff was superbly friendly and helpful. You can walkt to the centre of town, do all your shopping and walk to the cable car to go up to the Aiguille du Midi all within 10 min. walking or less. We booked to stay there one night on the front end of the trip and one night on the back end of the trip. They called me the week before the trip to advise they had a leak in one room and with the lengths of stays of other guests, would we mind being placed in another nearby hotel? They had made arrangements for us to stay in the other hotel for the same price we were to pay in theirs. BOTH hotels were extremely accomodating - the second hotel was even rated another "star" higher. Josianne was our main contact person - very kind and helpful! The breakfast included EGGS which is not something one finds everyday in a European hotel. Josianne gave us a room on the river L'Arve. It was spacious enough and the bathroom was roomy enough for two with plenty of HOT water and clean towels. Josianne gladly made reservations for us at a nearby restaurant as well.
We stayed there at the beginning of the summer seaons, which technically does nto start until July 1-ish and paid about 72 euros per night. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and will definitely go back again. We would recoomend this place to anyone who isn't expecting to be waited on hand and foot, but who would be satisfied with clean, convenient accomodations, friendly staff and for not a lot of money.

The Hotel is ideally placed within the centre of Chamonix with numerous restaurants, bars and shops only a short walk away after a hard day on the slopes. Our room was on the ground floor off the lobby and was a good size with everything we needed, a lovely river frontage and the rooms were always serviced to a high standard. The room was a little tired but more than adequate for the hotel rating and the ensuite was an excellent size. Only negative I would say is no decent cooked breakfast!

The bar has a good relaxed atmosphere and is great to wind down in with a drink.
