“Superb staff!”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

Stayed here over the New Year and were so impressed that we booked for a long weekend in March. Yes, some of the rooms are basic and dated, but on both occasions we have been moved into a nicer one when one became available. Cannot fault the staff especially Nacira who remembered us and went out of her way to make our stay special, and Katia who was also very friendly and helpful.
We had half board on our first visit and the food and service were lovely, but discovered on the last night that if you did not want to eat dinner at the hotel, they give you a voucher towards dinner in partner restaurants. This time we were room only, but ended up having breakfast at the hotel as there was an extensive, fresh choice and at 14 euro per head, it was well worth the money when you find that it isn't much cheaper to have one omelette and coffee in town.
Hotel is so handy for all the amenities - bars, restaurants, shops, mini market, and the ski bus stops just across the road.
Haven't used the onsite ski hire as we always go to Ravanel which is just beside the hotel - love the guys in there!
In conclusion, yes, some rooms need updating and some can be noisy, but the views and service are worth it. We will definitely be back.

Really convenient location, short walk to town center restaurants & bars and bus to ski areas stops just outside the door. Onsite ski rental was handy, staff was friendly if a bit disorganized. Room was a reasonable size and had a nice view, but dated and not in the greatest shape, and only very basic amenities provided (no coffee in the room, etc.) Decent value in a pricey town, but don't expect luxury.

This hotel served all our needs except wifi. To use wifi you had to register for a 3 hr time limit. This gave you a login and password which expired in 3 hours. Then you would have to reregister for another 3 hours. The wifi was also limited to web access, email, or instant messaging. All other apps on my phone were blocked. I could not even use the Chamonix app which I downloaded for this trip.
I do not believe this to be customer friendly and it lowered my opinion of this hotel.

Coming out of the hotel in the morning and seeing Mont Blanc was the highlight. The rooms are comfortable, the river runs next to the hotel, and it is very relaxing to stand there at night and just breathe in the alpine air. Very centrally located. Not much staff though.

Alpina is a huge hotel which is very sterile and lacks any atmosphere. Location is good with a bus service at the door.
The bedrooms are large for France with plenty of space.
Any service is virtually non existent and although there are staff around, management is not well organised and do not appear to care.
The food for 1/2 board dinner is very basic, poor, no imagination and not worth the effort. Better to go arounf the corner to eat at Bistro des Sports for good well priced local French food.
Although lots of staff on the dining room floor they just collect dishes and never keep an eye on the the availability of food & drink. Coffee machine runs out. At breakfast the omellettes are very ordinary.
For a ski resort, there are a lot of better places to choose from at the same price.

Room Tip: ensute a room with a balcony

The Hotel Alpina is in a great central location to Chamonix -- the bus stop for most ski resorts is right outside the front door and all the shopping and restaurants are just footsteps away. The views of the mountains are spectacular from the hotel as well.
However, it is run down and older. Rooms are small -- our room was only big enough to fit a double bed (they do not offer queen or king size beds). The furniture, bedding and bathroom is all old and out-dated, but works just fine. They have a restaurant upstairs but we never went -- mainly because breakfast was 14 euro -- no a la carte options -- and we thought that was pricey. There are great restaurants just footsteps away. There is no in-room coffee and that was difficult for us because we both enjoy coffee in the morning.
Also there is a "spa" in the hotel, but they really just have a steam room and a sauna, plus a "hot" tub that's actually not vey hot-- only luke warm, so we only used that one time and decided it wasn't worth the hassle after that.
All in all it was a fair price for the hotel. Chamonix is very expensive. Location and views great, but just remember, you pay for what you get.

The shower was amazing, endless hot water and great pressure, great for aching backs and legs if you have been skiing. Comfortable beds, clean and daily bed turn down, clean towels and bathroom clean up. Old fashioned decor very circa 1970s but a great hotel. rooms were very warm but easily cooled down with the door slightly open to the balcony. great views.great location, 2 minutes walk to restaurants shops bank etc. we hired a car but the bus service looked regular and reliable to the slopes. bar area looked lovely. had breakfast but never made it down in time (7-10am) worth booking the underground car park if you have a car. very handy and parking around town was difficult and expensive.

Room Tip: The view over the town was lovely but due to its central location i Imagine any view either side wou...
