“Too annoying to go back”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

The room itself was fine - basic but comfortable - but really there were too many annoyances:

Hopelessly unreliable wifi. This is important if you're trying to snatch some extra ski time but need to keep in touch with work
Staffing gap between 7 and 8 AM so if they run out of the (excellent) scrambled egg during that time, well tough.
No French vibe (predominantly Scandi staff who have no interest in French)
Good food judging by breakfast and lunch, but if you want dinner you have to book in advance
Ridiculously complicated procedure to get their ski discount. I gave up and got a better deal on my own
Very, very noisy until about midnight, or later if there are yelling morons roaming the streets

I stayed here for 2 nights half board. The dinner was incredible, best food I have had for a while. For breakfast they had quite a good selection to chose from, but it was pretty average. Only bad things are the smell and the noise. Après ski bar 'Chambre Neuf' is on the ground floor and it is very noisy until about 11pm even in my room on the 3rd floor. It also smells quite badly of stale beer in the corridors. But the restaurant and rooms smell fine. The location is perfect for the train station and town, not sure about the location in terms of skiing because I didn't go out on the hill.

Room Tip: rooms are quite noisy due to apres bar

We had a great time in Chamonix for 5 days, and as returning customers, we were aware of the bar at the hotel. Its fabulous for apres ski, but there is a lot of noise of a night, revellers returning at 3 am, we had to get up and ask some to shut up!
The hotel has character, , and staff are fine. Breakfast is 10 euro, and frankly, I d give it a miss. The porridge was like cement, and limited choice of anything else. There are small salon de the and cafes in the centre can do much better. If you Can hack the noise, its great. But we will stay elsewhere next time,

We stayed 2 nights and can't fault the hotel. Our room was huge, the staff were extremely friendly, the location was perfect for lifts/buses/restaurants etc. and the hotel bar had the best live music in Chamonix.

Room Tip: Room 101 is directly above the bar

I stayed at Gustavia Hotel for one night in June 2013 traveling with my 70 y/o Mom.

Rooms
We had a good sized room with two single beds and a balcony with a stunning view of the mountains. Beds were very comfortable. The interior is rather old but well kept. Overall a tidy and clean impression.

Front desk
Helpful and polite staff delivering excellent service.

Internet
The hotel had free Wi-Fi internet.

Breakfast
Breakfast buffet served at €10 per person and day.

Restaurant/Bar
There is also a small restaurant/pub/bar on the main floor open to non-guest. Live music is played during season.

Location
Hotel Gustavia is located by the train station in central Chamonix, five minutes walk from the main square. Parking is available on the premises.

Summary/Overall view
We were very happy with our stay. Good value for money. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms close to the bar.

The hotel is located close to the centre of the town (4-5 min walk). It offers free-wifi but breakfast is not included (10 euros per day). However the price of a room is very competitive given that I visited Chamonix in high season (beginning of January) and paid about 50 euro per night without breakfast. My room had some forniture with drawers, a nice bathroom, but was not provided with a proper wardrobe. Other than that it was ok (tv had a horrible signal reception).
The big minus is the noise: I was warned by other comments on Tripadvisor about trying to avoid having a room on the first floor, but this was not possible: the ground floor of the hotel has a rather nice pub with live music (music until 9pm so you are fine) but even if music stops rather early in the evening, there can be loud customers later in the night. Also, the walls of the rooms are not very insulating, hence if you happen to have as neighbors a group of loud youngsters you won't sleep.
Breakfast buffet was good, with a nice range of options.
All in all I recommend the hotel because of the price and location, but if you are travelling for work or with the family and need some sleep time, beware of the above.

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor at all costs

Stayed here for 3 nights with some friends. I am not a skier, but had a great time. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are simple but chic. The bar attached to the hotel plays live music and is open to all whether they are staying or not. If you want a quiet evening drink - go somewhere else! The hotel is next to the railway station and handy for the slopes and the town centre. The town is lovely and you can postpone buying your ski gear until you arrive, such is the abundance of shops.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter at night.
