“Christmas ski trip - great value”
Reviewed 10 May 2013

As Club med hotels go this was a really good week - we skied in a large group over Christmas and value for money was excellent - we booked early to get a discount. We paid for a deluxe room which was definitely worth it - we had a living room area separate from the bedroom and was really nice to have the extra space - none of the rooms (even the suites) have baths but the shower facilities were large and adequate.
As always the ski rental and lessons set up at Club Med was faultless - they have a great system that is quick and effecient. The food was of a good standard with all the treats like racelette, oysters, fois gras and the usual offering every day of pasta, meat and veg etc - although mostly buffet style so easy to over indulge! We tried the local speciality restaurant on Christmas day but it was a bit of a disaster as we were a large group and they just couldn't cope - if you are in a small group or a couple it could be good. If you are good enough to ski on blues and reds you should get to have lunch in at least one of the two mountain restaurants - both were excellent and it was great not to have to come back to the hotel.
The all inclusive bar was excellent and a decent size so not too crowded - we even requested a specific drink that they didn't have in stock so they went out and bought some from the local shops so we had it for the rest of the week.
The spa was great - massages etc but the outside pool was a little on the chilly side - would have been lovely to have had a warm swim surrounded by the snow!
Reception experience varied depending on who we were seen by - some excellent but some terrible, although it was the first week of the season so probably lots of new staff who weren't familiar with everything.
Am sure you would be able to find more luxury and high quality chalets or hotels in Chamonix but for best value, ski in / ski out and stress free week I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Room Tip: Deluxe room was worth the extra cost! Standard rooms are very small but if you just want a base and...

The club is very nice situated, very close to the nice city Chamonix. In two minutes you are downtown and in 5 minutes at the train station.
If you're skiing, the Club is the ideal place to go, skipass, skiteacher, good food, snacks and shows included. Depending on how much you spend for your room the smaller os bigger you get.

The staff of the hotel is very helpful, most speak English (which is unusual in France) and everyone is in a good mood. There is a wide variety of food which on the whole is very good, but is repetetive.
The rooms are very small with a tiny bathroom that isn't extremely clean. The rooms on the whole were the biggest disappointment of the hotel.
The hotel's location is excellent. Located right next to a ski-lift, and a three-minute walk to the centre.
The evenings are pleasant, with a show every night, and there are other activities such as billiards and fussball.

for a ski trip clubmed model is very convenient: in-house ski rental and ski school; all inclusive food and drinks; located right next to the lifts. so we could focus on the skiing itself.
There was a gastroenteritis breakout but given the whole of France was a high danger zone, i'm not sure how much can be attributed to the hotel itself. And i didn't get it anyway..
The property isn't luxury or in it's best state.
Buffet offered a wide range of choices and daily theme.
all in all it's still the convenience that mattered.

This is a club, all included, food, entertainment, ski class, ski pass.
The rooms are very small, unpleasant decor, have no idea who decided to put a Deer shaped lamp in the room.
The food was o.k. A lot of varieties, but I had the impression that some of the dishes were reprocesses, over left salads were used again the next day in other salads. I was healthy the whole week, but my son was ill after 4 days, and I know that many others became sick too. I am not sure if this the clubs fault.
The village of Chamonix is very beautiful, and you can walk from the hotel to the Main Street. As for ski, we had a terrible weather, and did not enjoy much from the ski resort.

We went skiing to ClubMed in Chamonix 17-24/2/2013. It wasn't cheap. Within less than 48h we came down with acute gastroenteritis, 5/8 people. So did many more in the club. I through-up all over the snow (luckily, at the end of the chairlift ride..). Barely made it back to my room. The Chef de Village said it had nothing to do with their food or the sanitation… many restaurant workers did not wear gloves while handling our food. When we came back home and complained to ClubMed they dismissed us completely. Said it was all over France and not their fault. Not the first time it happened to me in ClubMed! I’ve had it. Will no come back to ClubMed!

First, this is not their best property by far.
That having been said, the room was not cramped and we had enough space to enjoy our 2-week stay there. There were enough shelves and hanging closet area to put all our belongings away. The bathroom & toilet were standard Club room. The cleaning staff did a good job and provided an extra bottle of water (2 in total) when asked. The layout of the place definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Finding the fitness centre was challenging and could not be done without instructions (it was a maze).

Second, the food was of a good standard but the food at the Club Med Val d'Isere was much better. The chefs did a decent to provide for the onslaught of guests but the buffet area for hot food was relatively (compared to other Club Med properties) small. No-one in our two ski groups had gastroenteritis during our stay (this has happened at other properties, where the dreaded bug swept through the whole place!). The serving staff at the dining hall were very mediocre except for one exceptional star (Youssef Boulbia from Tunisia). The rest were usually absent and had to be hunted out for refills of water carafes, extra spoons, place clearance, etc (Youssef actually *anticipated* EVERY request!!! Amazing.).

Third, the reception staff was not uniformly good. There was one star (Jorge) but the rest were definitely mediocre at best. As an example, they could not tell me the location of the Club Med La Flegere restaurant on the mountain (pointing on a map!). On the other hand, they were able to summon a doctor efficiently for the bouts of influenza experienced by a fair number of guests. It would appear that the reception team was not a cohesive unit, from the mistakes that were made with accounts - we were told of at least two separate incidents where people had their accounts mixed up and only found out on checking out. Language-wise, their English was far, far better than my French (some were completely fluent) so we appreciated their patience.

Other incidents that stand out were:
- there was only ONE clothes washing machine & dryer for the entire property, ridiculous considering how many people were living there. No-one monitored the amount of washing detergent left so on at least two occasions we had to bring the empty container up to reception to get it refilled.
- the washing machine broke down in the middle of our second week! It was out of action for over a day and even Jorge could not tell us when it would be repaired. That meant a trek out into the village to look for a automated laundromat at 8pm (in winter of course) and having to wait there until the washing was done (thereby missing dinner).
- finding the ESF ski instructor/guide who was supposed to be at the desk on the Ground Floor every day at 5.30pm was a challenge. This is the person who was the key to skiing Vallee Blanche and we had to wait a few days before they mysteriously appeared (even though they were supposed to be there every day).
- cigarette smoke filled the entrance area every day as smokers camped out on the entry steps puffing away. This was extremely uncomfortable for anyone with the flu (as many did!) inside.
- updates to ski conditions were not timely (or provided at all, when it was pointed out that the signs on the noticeboards were out of date).

In spite of all those, we still enjoyed ourselves. The skiing was incredible, the staff were always friendly and polite, we had clean beds and plenty of nice food to eat. It was a a great two week holiday and we would happily return.
