“Courcheval Warner experience”
Reviewed 15 March 2012

A last minute skiing holiday Courcheval is a good location for skiing and the Dahu run by Mark Warner staff is ok but don't expect luxury . It is friendly and run by English staff out for a ski season . The location is good . The food is ok and plentiful . With only 40 rooms it is not overly busy . Courcheval is by far the best of the three valleys .

If there is snow in Courcheval 1850 then you are in for a great holiday. A three valleys ski pass will mean you can easily ski different terrain every day of your 7 day holiday whether you are super slow and safe green run beginner or a mogul munching black run devil. Lots of lovely mountain restaurants ( recommend Le souk but need to book and tres cher but worth it) and IMO the best skiing in the world ( and I have skied everywhere) - Mark Warner will look after your kids competently and nannies will pick up from lessons give lunch and take back to lessons or for younger ones take for a snow-play - so you can pick them up early r stay out for a long guilt free ski just like you did before the little darlings arrived - lots of English families mean the hotel is a safe environment for the kids with everyone getting to know each other fairly quickly. The ski hosting is excellent meaning you dont have to refer to a piste map at all and of course helps the socailising for the evening. The hotel is well positioned just a 1 minute walk to the main Chenu and Verdons bubble lifts or you can elect to ski down the valley and avoid the lifts completely for a while - The town is famously expensive so the all inclusive is welcome - the hotel itself is shabby and there is an awful stink in reception ( I have been there twice over 4 years and it is a permanent feature) but it is only reception. The food was excellent except the afternoon tea which was boring but welcome. A couple of simple quizzes make up the entertainment in the evening- the bar area is comfortable for flopping after a hard day on the slopes - Don't expect much from the hotel you are paying for one of the best locations you can ski from in the world and for that alone it is worth it

Room Tip: Room 9 is the best

Just got back from a week of great skiing with Mark Warner in the Chalethotel Dahu in Courchevel 1850. We go a late minute deal for 6 of us. Each stayed in 2 person rooms. Faclities of the rooms were simple and nothing 5 star but for what we paid they were excellent, clean, warm and comfortable.

The staff were all fantastic and really friendly. Ski hosts were all friendly and really looked after the ski groups. The building is located only just 3 a minute walk from the slopes and lifts so was an ideal location. We didn't take children but there were a number of people that did and the place looked after them fantastically with child care and entertainment.

Food was really good eveynight and we didnt expect food like that. Again I'm not saying its 5 star as we didnt pay for 5 star but its probably th best food in a chalet that I have ever had.

I will definatly book with Mark Warner again on a catered chalet holiday.

The only down side is the general cost of france ski resorts. One bar we went in to was 8euros for a pint of beer!! Its all getting just a little too much and I think that I may as well look to canada next year.

All in all really really good week.

My partner and I stayed at the Dahu from 5th February for a week, we initially chose the hotel due to taking our nephew who unfortunately was unable to come after we had booked. Having heard very good reports about Mark Warner and their standards we were looking forward to seeing if M.W lived up to their reputation..sadly it did not.
Decor etc - to put it simply, it is in dire need of refurbishment. Our bedroom had large cracks in the wall, the wardrobe doors did not slide and had to be pushed open with a significant amount of force, there were gaps between the ''fitted' carpet and the wall in places, the duvet had holes in it and although clean, had suffered from marking over some time. Where the TV was, there was a lot of dust (clearly wiped around). The bathroom was clean and functional with lots of hot water but a bath which would appear to have built up years of marks!!

The Lounge area had sofas and chairs to sit on which when new would have looked lovely however they were very worn to the point of shiny chair arms in places. I could go on but this paints the picture. The bedroom was small with not enough space and only one chair which meant one person had to sit on the bed. Another small point was that there was no remote control for the TV. sauna would be a significant improvement.

Food -The food was good especially the cakes for afternoon tea however when ordering dinner you had to wait a long time for the food to arrive, it was hit and miss as to whether you
would get your vegetables with your meal, after you had started eating (as the food was going cold whilst you waited), or sometimes not all! In general the food was very good for a 3 star and was nicely presented too.

Staff - The staff were young and for some it was their first time away from home and working for M.W. They were all polite in the main (apart from the yawning bar manager who had been out partying and by his own admission was knackered!). They were enthusiastic and some really made an effort to cha with you about your day skiing. The problem was that they seemed to lack experience/training which is not their fault but M.W seems to have thrown them in at the deep end with little or no leadership. On two occasions we returned from a days skiing to find the room key had been left in the door all day by the cleaning staff meaning that anyone could have gone into our room.Head Chalet Girl Melissa was also enthusiastic but again this was her first time for M.W (she was on a career break from Accounting). My partner had a massage in the Spa in the basement of the Chalet which she said was wonderful and the lady who did this was very nice and helpful. An apology for this was given. Fortunately we had put our passports and money in the hotel safe.

The skiing was fantastic and the location of the Chalet is very good, a 5 minute walk to the main gondolas.

Would we use M.W again? Definitly not..however if childcare was a priority this seemed to be well organised and certainly staffed by people who enjoyed their job.

What is required is 'hands on' leadership, leading by example and better training for M.W staff. Luke who worked in the restaurant always took the time to ask about your day and if everything was okay with your food. I almost felt sorry for him and he was clearly trying to please his customers balanced against poorly trained serving staff and a slow Chef..not his fault!

M.W needs to ensure they do not try and ride on their reputation alone and actually deliver to the standards expected for the money charged.

I stayed at the Dahu in mid-Jauary & had one of the best week's skiing...fresh powder, blue skies every day :-) But ski conditions apart, the thing which really made it was the ski guiding - thanks to Vanessa for sharing your expert knowledge, listening to what we wanted to do, keeping us safe, nurturing a nice relaxed atmosphere in the group and encouraging us to keep exploring (although top of Val Thorens was a bit chilly compared to the champagne ski conditions we enjoyed most of the time). Meeting up with the other groups for lunch worked fine (and restaurants were fine) - and I heard good reports on Mark and Luke's guiding of them.

The Dahu's location is hard to beat - 2 minute walk up to the main lifts. As you'll have gathered from othe reviews, the Dahu is a little rough around the edges, but that's hardly unusual in a ski resort. The rooms are a bit small & not the most modern but they're cosy, clean and the water was consistently hot. I really liked the communal lounge/bar with the comfy sofas - a nice space to catch up with people (and certainly not taken over by the staff). They did a couple of quizzes during the week and had a DVD corner for the kids (who eat earlier than the adults).

The food was also wholesome & tasty and certainly enough for my large appetite. Veg was a bit mixed, but everything else good, including the free wine. And the restaurant staff had a nice informal manner - they genuinely did seem interested in what you'd been up to, but that didn;t detract from good service. So well done Luke, Lewis and the girls. The soup, cakes and tea from 4pm were also an excellent if a little too tempting.

Quite a few people had booked their ski's thru Mark Warner - my advice would be to try instead to get some decent online discounts and avoid the treck over to the ski shop over the other side of town for measuring etc (although they do deliver/collect the skis the distance makes it a litte more difficult to sort out any problems & you're probably paying extra).

Overall, a great week & definitely tempted to return.

Myself and my boyfriend booked this as a very last minute holiday and we were very happy with our stay with Mark Warner. The staff really do go the extra mile to help you out. And contrary to other reports we thought the food was very good (eg. duck confit, roast lamb, ham hock terrine) some times there were big gaps between starter and main course. But we occupied ourselves with the very good free flowing wine. Breakfast was varied and adaquate and the cakes for afternoon tea were amazing. Really no need to spend money on the mountain for lunch.
The only let down was the accommodation which was very tired. The whole hotel needs a face lift and the rooms are very small, little more than standing room either side of the bed. 2 of the 3 coat hooks in our room broke instantly, no remote for the TV and some of the channels were frozen and neither of our bed side lamps worked. Having said that we spent so little time in our rooms it didn't really impact on our stay. Had we not booked a last minute deal we may have felt a little stronger about the poor accom, however we had a great time and would certainly book with Mark Warner again.

It is disappointing to read a number of recent disparaging reviews concerning the the Dahu for having returned on 5 February after a week's stay, I believe a more balanced approach will reveal an organisation which seeks to provide a good service at a sensible and affordable price. Fault can be found if you start turning stones but my wife and I came away feeling that in meeting so many like minded people in a atmosphere of warmth and friendship, supplemented by a kind caring staff, excellent food (and wine) and most satisfactory accommodation, we had little to complain about. In short, Mark Warner provided just the tonic we needed in these straightened times and we bless them for it.
