“Some good, some not so good”
Reviewed 9 November 2011

It was my own fault that I booked 3 nights at a hotel at Perrache railway station, when I really wanted Part Dieu station.

The good; the whole place was very fresh and modern looking, with a lot of colour. The room clean, and sparking. The bathroom similarly up to date. The wifi worked fine. The staff friendly and helpful..except when it came to trying to check in early. The breakfast looked good, but we didn't get a chance to eat in the hotel.

The location has a reputation of being seedy, but we didn't experience any evidence of trouble in spite of going to and from the station quite late at night.

The hotel is about 50 metres from from one of the main transport hubs in Lyon covering trains, metro, trams and buses. However, you did need to catch the metro or tram to get to the historical and shopping part of the city.

It's also next door to one of the famous Lyon eateries, Brasserie George. It's worth trying because it's great fun, and it's mostly locals who eat there.

The not so good; the room (on the first floor) was quite small (but manageable), but given the warm weather when we were there, it was stiflingly hot. Open a window and get some fresh air, and the noise from the Autoroute and elsewhere was a killer. Close the window, and broil slowly.

Also, a minor niggle was that I booked at their rack rate, and they were having big price reductions, but wouldn't allow a change. Their call, but an offer would have been nice.

We really enjoyed staying at the Hotel Central. The room was spacious, the bathroom was nice and clean, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Plus, they offer an English breakfast for a reasonable price. We chose the hotel because of its close proximity to the train station, and we were also within walking distance of many things in the middle of Lyon. The room was very quiet in spite of being so close to the train station and next to a very busy road. We would definitely stay there again!

We only stayed one night but we were very pleased with the experience. Room was a good size, bathroom first rate and the young lady at the front desk for check in was top notch as was the room clerk on duty in the morning. Very helpful.
As well, this might be one of the only hotel breakfasts that was actually worth the cost in all of France. Excellent quality with lots of choices.
All in all I can't think of any better hotel choice in Lyon for the money.

Nothing flash but very close to transport and central city, and very helpful staff (eg storing our food goodies in the refrigerator, supplying a kettle to make cups of tea). A bit hard to find if you take the wrong turn from the station.

The hotel is conveniently located and relatively inexpensive, the rooms are quiet and clean (though extremely small), the breakfasts are excellent, and we found the staff to be polite and friendly.

However I could not say they were helpful. They were unable to assist with any of the problems I encountered, specifically:
1) room being too cold because of a hyperactive ventilator
2) inability to access internet
3) scrambled reception of all the English-language TV stations (except Russia Today)

The other main drawback was the smallness of the rooms. Ours was too tiny to contain any drawers or storage space, aside from a narrow closet for hanging a couple of jackets. And the bathroom was too tiny to contain anything other than a toliet and shower, separated by a curtain. (The sink and mirror were in the bedroom. This actually gets quite annoying.)

In addition, I wasn't happy with the way our reservation was handled. A few hours before our arrival (while on the Eurostar from London) I received an email from the hotel saying that our booking was not confirmed and would not be held past 6pm. This contradicted a confirmation email I had received several days earlier from Hotels.com. (This email had also said I would be charged for cancellation less than 48 hours in advance, which seems a little unfair given that the hotel waited until a few hours before arrival to say they would not hold my booking!) The explanation was simply that this was their policy.

If I ever return to Lyon, I will probably try the Ibis hotel next door, rather than returning to the Central Perrache.

Room Tip: Our room was very small and cold. In retrospect I should have insisted on seeing it before accepting...

We enjoyed our three nights in this hotel. The location is quite central, the staff helpful and a good breakfast. Our room was nice and large and fairly quiet.

My daughter (22) and me were in Lyon for 2 nights and we found that small hotel very cute and nice specially for the price. It was very simple, quite small, specially the room, but we had everything we needed . it was a bit hard to found in the beginning by car but after that, we park the car and did'nt use it for 2 days because we were very close to the metro station. Breakfast was nice, in a very cute area and the staff very polite and helpful. We were next to the famous Brasserie Georges and everything was easily accessible by metro.
we will go back there anytime
