Lyon's Croix-Rousse neighborhood is edgy and energetic. Definitely visit on a Sunday morning if you're in Lyon. The market that day goes on for blocks and blocks. The people are friendly and helpful. If you're planning a picnic or have a way to prepare food, take your shopping bags, as you won't be able to resist buying the excellent local cheeses, vegetables and fruits. Plus, roasted chickens and fish.

Go to this area ( easily reached by metro ) on a Sunday morning to see the market. Great views over Lyon but also a really vibrant athmosphere. Have a coffee and croissant at a local cafe and watch the world go by.

Must visit this area. Very nice view of the city if you walk up the hill around the international residential quarter. The market is very full of interesting fruits and vegetables. Very colourful. The Gros Cailloux is not tha exciting though and the views from that direction is not as nice. Several good restaurants in the area.

A pleasant suburb, overlooking the city.
Built in the heyday of Lyon's industrial prosperity.
Still a nice destination to spend a couple of hours, and it boasts a unique metro/funicular train hybrid.

We stopped in an apartment in Croix Rousse for our stay in Lyon during the Fete des Lumieres, and I have to say this area has such an amazing atmosphere. There are so many hidden treasures to stumble upon, which you will miss if you stick to the main city centre. The montée du grande cote is especially beautiful (albeit hard to walk up!) as it gives a spectacular view of the city, whilst providing many unique independent shops and cafes.
Also, the traboules in this area are especially unique and offer up some amazing history of the area - you can find maps for these online/at the tourist office.
