There is a wonderful museum where the entry fee includes an audioguide in English, which explains much about the ruins as well as the original Roman settlement. Fascinating history.

The amphitheatres are impressive of course, especially once you see the models of just how big they used to be. Best part for me though, were the floor mosaics, and the exhibits showing how the Roman houses used to be built with these entertainment areas. Better than just a hall full of busts and pillars, this starts to show you how the Roman elite lived, 2000 years ago.

We have visited Lyon several times previously but never went to the Gallo-Roman museum. We went this time as part of our excursion to Fourviere. We took the funicular to the top, visited the amazing Basilica, then walked down to the top entrance of the museum and the impressive ruins. The museum is beautifully laid out and the displays are amazing, especially the intact mosaic floors, which are more spectacular than those of Pompeii. As you wind your way down through the museum, looking out through the large windows at the ancient theaters enhances what you are seeing inside. This should be a "must" for any traveler with an interest in Roman civilization.
