“Amazing place - a hidden gem hidden away!”
Reviewed 14 June 2012

The place is amazing, an old monastery with beautiful stone work, great decoration in bedroom, a lovely restaurant and the food is really good. The staff has been the most helpful and treated us like royalties. Will definitely come back. I would strongly recommend this place for either a work do (as they have meeting rooms and are quick and well organized) or a romantic getaway.

We had a lovely stay in Lyon and the Hotel Cour De Loges made an excellent base. The hotel has a number of very good points.

• The location is very convenient in the heart of the old town, the Boucheries in the area are excellent and it is a short walk to the river seine and to the Vieux Lyon metro stop from where you can get anywhere in the city. The funacular up to the Cathedral Furneval is located here too - go up there for stunning views over the city.

• The service is excellent without exception, all staff are both professional and friendly. Special mention is due for the chief concierge who has 25 years experience and is a real asset to the hotel. His advice on where to visit was spot on and he also helped us get into an exclusive restaurant for lunch!

• The breakfast selection is very good. It wasn't included in our reservation and you will have to decide yourselves on whether it is worth the cost as it is not cheap. From my point of view the selection and quality of food makes it worthwhile - fruit, cereals, local cheese, cold cuts, fresh bread and pastries along with a hot selection of eggs, sausages and bacon. Coffee and tea was very good and, again, excellent service.

• The Cour De Loges has two restaurants - a fine dining restaurant within the hotel and a more casual brasserie next door. We eat at the brasserie; the food was very good with the same levels of service as the hotel.

• The architecture is very interesting indeed and walking throughout the hotel was like touring a special building. The interesting architecture goes right into your room and makes it quirky - for instance both the shower cubicle and bath are in the main bedroom along with the bed! You will have to decide if this bothers you.

So, the Cour De Loges is very good. There are a few items that if they were addressed it would become excellent. These are;

• The toilet (and bidet) are housed in a very small almost cupboard like room. I'm a well built six footer and found it a tight squeeze. It certainly makes you complete your visit to the loo as quickly as possible! The door also caught on the floor making opening and closing a challenge.

• The wardrobe was very small and we couldn't fit all the clothes that we wanted to hang in there. There were two drawers but one had an extra blanket in it so we had to keep some of our clothes in the case. Not a problem if you pack light but we don't!

• Whilst it didn't particularly bother us the lighting in the room would not be to all tastes. The quite dim ambience suits the architecture but it made reading a challenge - luckily I pack a reading light.

These are all relatively small items (depending on what is important to you) but in my experience the difference between very good hotels and excellent ones comes down to small details.

Travel tips. Take the RhoneExpress tram from the airport (go straight through arrivals, the platform is outside) into Lyon Gare Part Dieu it takes 25 minutes and costs 15 euros. Walk through the Gare Part Dieu and get the metro to Saxe-Gambetta. Change lines here and get the metro to Vieux Lyon. Take a left outside of the station, walk past the Cathedral St Jean on your right and turn left - this will take you to Rue Du Beouf. The hotel is 50 meters on your right.

Enjoy your stay in Lyon!

Room Tip: Ask if all rooms have the bath and shower cubicle in the room. It didn't bother us but might if...

This is not a standard hotel. If you expect that, don't stay here. But if you want some old world character married with some new world design chic this place rocks. Quirky building, quirky rooms. But overall a great place.

This gorgeous hotel is in the heart of the old city and in a pedestrian area of small shops and fabulous restaurants. It is a stunning esthetic experience and the service is friendly and amenable.
I highly recommend this beautiful place!

We didn't stay at the hotel, but my wife and I ate at the restaurant. It was her birthday, so I was hoping for something fancy, tasty, and special. It was all of those. The setting is gorgeous. The hotel itself is built from four old houses that used to form a city block. The restaurant, which has maybe 8 tables and seats 20 at most, is set up in the covered courtyard that lay between these four houses. You sit there, in this covered courtyard, staring by candlelight at the outside walls of these four houses... romantic indeed.

Service was flawless. Open from 8 to 11, they only have time for one dinner seating, which makes for seamless service and attention from the team of waiters. Rather than having a waiter, you have a whole team - we saw each of the servers at one point, in a display of teamwork that we still can't get over. The pace of the meal was perfect.

The meal itself was equally impressive. We tried the tasting menu. While no wine pairing option was offered, the sommelier proposed by-the-glass pairings himself, effective constructing a wine tasting menu for us. Choices were mainly from the Cote-du-Rhone region and included some of the best French wines we've ever had (and which, given the size of their production, we will probably never find outside of France). Food was also great - a bit on the heavier size for a tasting menu - very tasty and well executed. Next time I am in Lyon and have 300 euro to drop on a special occasion, I'll be back in a second.

The whole team of the restaurant "Les Loges" is happy that his efforts were rewarded by the pleasure you felt during your dinner.
Please, feel free to try our "Café Epicerie" whose kitchen is supervised by the same Head Chef, for a more informal opportunity!

We are members of SLH and have used them extensively in Europe over the past 7 years, so we know what to expect and Cour Del Loges was what we expected. Yes, it's quirky, but given its history, that's to be expected. Seriously, if you want a modern, stainless steel hotel room, there are plenty out there, but none with any character. We only stayed 2 nights, but made memorable by the concierge George. His knowledge of the city, walking distances, places of interest are superb. We dined on the first night at the Bistro next to the hotel, good meal at a reasonable price. The only criticism I have is the bar prices in the hotel bar - they are outrageous. Nobody minds a markup in prices, but 18 euros for a basic mixed drink is absurd. The cocktails were cheaper! Apart from that, it's a good place to stay.
