“An Amazing Stay”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

As all of the other reviews have stated, la Chambre d'Hugo is a truly lovely place to stay, right in the centre of Lyon. Rather than staying in a anonymous hotel, here you feel like you are actually living in an apartment in France! Christine and Stephan made us feel so welcome, and even though our rooms were within their apartment, we still maintained our privacy. Christine's wonderful breakfasts were delicious, each day she presented us with something special ... a lovely custard with poached pears, or pain perdu, always accompanied by croissants, brioche, fresh fruit, cheese, cold meat, cafe au lait, and her fabulous selections of home made jams ... a wonderful way to begin the day. Suggestions on what to see, and where to dine were much appreciated.

Christophe and Christine know what family is so even though we were only passing through for a couple of nights we were made to feel right at home. More than simply a business, they've raised B&Bs to an art. Not only is their 19-century home beautifully decorated but Christine's gracious and finely wrought art graces the walls. She is an outstanding talent -- not just with her paintings but in the treatment of their elegant home. She makes all her own curtains and bedding with the finest linens. Her warm and comforting taste is further demonstrated with her bountiful breakfast offerings that are presented with beauty and care. Her homemade jams are the best. Make sure to try the sour cherry. If you're going to Lyon, this is the place you want to stay.

I can't add much to the previous reviews - accommodations, breakfast, reservations, hospitality, etc., etc. were excellent, particularly for a location near the sites in a large city. We would particularly like to commend Mssr. Branche for his help in getting to the train station when we left. We were planning on walking to the Perrache train station to connect to the main train station. He graciously offered to take us in his car so we would avoid the hassle of transferring our [many] bags between trains.

We were there in the middle of June and it was getting a little warm. Like many hotels there is no A/C, but it was very acceptable by keeping the curtains closed and using the fan in the room.

We were traveling by train, and if you can get a direct train to the Perrache station in Lyon it is only a few minutes walk to their B&B. It's a lot more hassle taking the subway as you need to make a transfer and there's a lot of stairs involved.

I also advise you to think twice about trying the andouillette (tripe) sausage. We had reservations for a recommended boucheron in Lyon to try it but had previously tried it in Annecy (award winning 2012 recipe). Bad experience - with the sauce it didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste good. We canceled the reservation in Lyon.

I agree with all the other reviews that Christine's delicious breakfasts were outstanding. The table was set differently each day and the soft music playing in the background was wonderful. We felt so pampered in the luxury bathroom with a dressing table, thick plush towels, and large shower stall. I would return here for sure because of the wonderful hosts-Christine and Christoph.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy a 3 night stay in Christine and Christophe's lovely apartment last month. The location of the apartment is perfect, a short walk to a metro stop and within easy walking distance of the rivers that surround this area. From beginning to end the experience was just wonderful. The room with private bath is large, very comfortable and extremely quiet. There is even a large closet to store your clothes and luggage. Even though this accommodation is a room and bath within a private residence I never felt like I was intruding on my hosts or that my privacy was affected. The way that the apartment is set up you walk from the front entry door, down a hallway and enter your private wing of the apartment which you can then close off so that you have your own space. The breakfast that Christine provides is just perfect! Homemade jams, fresh fruit, yogurt, bread and croissants, fruit juice, coffee, sliced cheese and more, all presented in her beautiful dining room on a table set like a fine restaurant. Christine is Lyon's Martha Stewart, no doubt!! Christine suggested places for us to visit, made dinner reservations for us and even gave me directions to an unbelievable small antique shop owned by a woman who has small, unique items from all over the world. I was able to find an antique cameo pendant there that will make the perfect birthday gift for my mother in law. Even if you don't buy anything at this shop, it is worth a stop simply for it's uniqueness. I believe the shop owners name is Marilee. Christine went out of her way to answer any questions we had and she even provided us with metro tickets on our first morning there. When it was time for us to leave and pick up our rental car, Christine and her husband Christophe insisted on driving us to the car office when we discovered that it was not near a train or metro stop. I can not say enough about how willing both of these lovely people were to help us out in any way they could...they are the perfect hosts!! I would stay in this room again in a heartbeat and I highly recommend it to anyone.

We enjoyed two nights at La Chambre d'Hugo in mid April. The location in Lyon is perfect for access to all the city has to offer and Christine was generous with assistance and advice. As others have reported, the breakfasts were quite memorable. Christine is obviously a foodie who uses and promotes local products. Highly recommended. Oh, and if arriving by train, we learnt (the hard way) that it is much closer to walk from Perrache than from Gare Part-Dieu!
