Great renovation of an old building as long as you like red. Rooms are small like most in France. The bathroom could be more functional and a bit more storage would be nice. Great service except housekeeping did not come until after 1600 which is inexcusable. Overall good but not quite there.

Room Tip: Ask for view onto the place

I loved this newly renovated hotel in the midst of the Presqu'ile (between the two rivers Saone and Rhone). The hotel has a great mix of modern and heritage. If possible, ask for a room with a view over Place de la République. Shopping is just around the corner and there are plenty of restaurants just a stroll away. We used the city bikes (which you can pick up in one place and leave at another, organized by the city of Lyon, not the hotel, the closest station is just by the entrance) to have a little sightseeing by ourselves. Breakfast was great, with a good selection of cereals, French breads and pastries, cold cuts, fruits and eggs, sausages, etc. The staff was friendly and personal, giving you a great start of the day. The beds were comfy, the rooms are on the small side, but with plenty of space to put your stuff away. I would definitively come back to this hotel if I have the pleasure to come back to Lyon in the future.

Room Tip: If possible, get a room on the top floor with a view over Place de la République.

This is a beautiful, charming hotel, in a terrific location. The staff was friendly, professional, and eager to help. Most spoke English extremely well, particularly at the front desk. The room was quite large for a European hotel with big fantastic windows, and the bathroom was huge and beautiful! We had a lovely balcony overlooking a huge square with a quaint little carousel. The hotel was recently renovated, and very clean, bright and quiet. Side note- the decoration in this hotel is VERY VERY RED! Wow! Not in a bad way, but really red! The breakfast was plentiful, and the ladies who worked the breakfast were so friendly and sweet! The location is close to everything, and using the metro to get to and from the airport was a breeze (about 35 minutes total). We would absolutely stay here again!

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony overlooking the square are beautiful!

We stayed at the Carlton 2 nights to visit Lyon and we're very happy with having made this choice. The hotel is perfectly situated in the city center of Lyon. We could visit all main sites by walking.
The hotel itself is great, high quality (recently renewed) and the staff extremely nice and welcoming.
Rooms are great, beautiful, and beds are incredibly comfortable. I just found the bathroom a little bit less convenient to use: although it is big enough, we missed places to put our bathroom stuff.
Breakfast was good in terms of food and choice. However we really didn't like the room. It was small, crowded with people, we couldn't find a place to sit. And it was very noisy, not relaxing at all...
So overall a very good experience except for the breakfast area which was quite below our expectations for such a high quality hotel.

From check in to check out, we were impressed by this charming hotel in Lyon - the rooms are fantastic, the decor and ambiance just great and the staff were sublime. Special mention to Aurilien who went out of his way to ensure our stay was nothing short of exemplary. Would definitely stay here again and would also recommend to anyone else who was trying to decide between this hotel and another. Book here, you have to experience its charm at least once. Only shame is that we couldn't stay longer than 1 night.

Room Tip: Try to ask for a room overlooking the square...

I stayed here for a week in May & it spoilt me for the rest of the South of France. The staff were lovely...helpful, informative, even the domestic staff who spoke little English humoured my French. Its within easy walking distance of place Bellecour & most other sights, other than the Old Town & the Church which I chose to go to by 10 Euro taxi. Lots of good restaurants nearby, including the very inexpensive Hippopotamus if you need to watch the money. Department stores over the square if you wish to shop, boutiques nearby. Rooms small, but this is France, and an EXCELLENT breakfast to start the day. There is a lovely carousel right outside, encouraging you to eat an icecream & watch the delightful & delighted chidren.

Room Tip: I had a room overlooking the place de la Republique & the carousel, with a little balcony, I wo...

The Carlton is a top class hotel by every measurement - size of room, quality of furnishings, comfort of bed, spacious and well-equipped bathroom, superb location, excellent breakfast and most of all it's super-friendly and ever-helpful staff. If I had one criticism it would be that it's beautifully restored elevator is rather inadequate and perhaps they should move luggage around by using the service elevator, but that is really a minor detail which in no way diminished our pleasure in staying here.
