Best Western Hotel De Verdun
Ranked #116 of 196 Hotels in Lyon
Reviewed 3 October 2013

I was traveling alone in Lyon for business and to visit a friend. I arrived via train and stayed for 5 days. I chose to stay here because of the proximity of the hotel to the Perrache train station; I would have a lot of luggage on my return to Paris.
This was my 3rd trip to Lyon and on previous trips I stayed at Hotel Simplon (a block away, same price but a bit run down) and at the Ibis Villeurbanne (cheap but way outside of tourist areas). The Best Western Verdun was very clean, had TV and free wifi, option for coffee and breakfast in the a.m. and very helpful staff. There was a staff member at the desk 24 hrs a day and a security door where they buzz you in. Almost all of the staff spoke English. There was a brand new laundromat a block away, tons of restaurants, close to Place Carnot, easy walk to Place Bellecour and the My single room was pretty big, had full size bed, private bathroom and great faux bois patterned carpet. I will stay here again.

The hotel is just around the corner from the Lyon Perrache train station. If your train goes to the Lyon Part-Dieu station instead, it is a easy ride on the T1 Tram from across the street to Perrache. The host was very friendly, and check in was super easy - all he asked was our name before giving us our room key. The host was also resourceful on local attractions and restaurants. The hotel is not in the hustle-and-bustle part of town (north of here), but fairly quite and within short walk to everywhere.

This room was BIG. My husband and I stayed here for four nights in May 2013 and we were surprised at the size of the room. The hotel was very very clean, the front desk staff were nice and helpful and spoke English well. The parking is 15 Euros per night, but street parking can be difficult to come by, so it's worth it. The location of the hotel was great. Lyon is a small city, and you can walk everywhere, and this hotel was about a five minute walk from the Place Bellecour where there is a tourist center that you should definitley stop at if you're a tourist. We loved Lyon, everything about Lyon, including this hotel which was priced well, had a very comfortable bed, and was in a sfae part of the city. We walked home late at night a few times and always felt safe. We would absolutely stay again.

We loved our 3 night stay here and we will definitely be returning! The staff are fantastic - all speak English and are very helpful, cheerful and good humoured. There is a little cafe style area in Reception where juice and coffee was complimentary and even though you could help yourself the staff would always rush to serve you which I thought was lovely! Couldn't see any alcoholic drinks were available? No restaurant or food available but then we didn't ask and it didn't matter at all as the location of the hotel is brilliant! Close to river & sites, cafes, restaurants, bars & shops - couldn't ask for better! Our room was spotlessly clean, really spacious and the bed was the comfiest we have ever slept in in a hotel! Floor boards a little creaky and some noise from neighbouring rooms but you expect that in an old hotel! We even had a balcony - the best part was you could open the doors and walk out on to the balcony and take in the views. All the public areas throughout the hotel smelt wonderful which made the hotel very welcoming. Couldn't fault it - it really was excellent value for money!

Bad: strange smell in lobby (didn't penetrate the room), wooden floors were warped, thus uneven. Limited English spoken.
Good: very friendly, very strong wi-fi signal in my room #9.. Breakfast was good. Location is awesome! price, price, price! For this location 120 euro per night is good. Location is very close (100m or so from train/metro) so possible to arrive by train and walk around old town..
Overall I highly recommend this place.. Not perfect but very good.

I stayed there with another student, we were attending conferences. The room was perfect, everything was clean, we could even open windows to get some fresh air in. We did not eat breakfast there so I cannot say anything about it (but Lyon has plenty of bakeries and cafés that serve breakfast, so this can be an option as well). Very discrete and friendly staf. We felt really safe and did not have to worry about anything! They even kept our luggage after check-out on the last day of our stay. We slept really well, we had two quiet nights.

This Best Western is located next to the Perrache Station, across from a high school. Just behind it is a plaza, for restaurants a walk, that leads down Victor Hugo street, a great street for shopping, which leads right into Bellecour Plaza. A perfect place to meet and leave from in all directions and come back to. Right around the corner there is a small market, fresh fruits and snacks.
The Hotel is in a traditional building. Tall windows and lots of architectural charm. But the bathrooms and furniture are modern, leaving room for all the comforts of modern life. And of course wireless internet and flat screen TV. An elevator.
And the bedding, the bedding is white clean, fluffy and just plain old great. Soft and comfortable, the mattresses are new you can tell right away.
The bathroom has a shower with some body and hair wash natural as expected. A hair dryer. Perfectly clean ample toilet paper, and of course towels.
The staff is friendly and basically handle everything. The front door is locked and you enter with a ring, there is a camera at the door, very safe. A nice breakfast area with standard breakfast, and modern furniture.
The price is comparable, not to much not to little.
I would certainly return, for the comfort, for the authenticity, for the location and for the price.
