“Excellent value for money”
Reviewed 5 June 2013

We have been visiting Lyon for years and have stayed in many of its hotels. On this trip we stayed in this and two other hotels on our way to and from the south. The room prices were 69 (Chartres), 74 (Lyon) and 150 Euros (Fontainbleau). The Croix Rousse was far superior to the hotel in Chartres, and the advantages of the hotel in Fontainebleau did not justify the considerable price-hike. The Croix Rousse district is one of the most interesting and lively areas of Lyon, but if it is your first time in Lyon you will want to stay somewhere nearer the centre - Croix Rousse is perched at the top of a hill and it is a long walk down to the centre (and even further back up). I dissent from the reviewer who says it is perfectly possible to park on the street - finding anywhere to park in Lyon is a nightmare, and in Croix Rousse they have a street market where the stallholders will not be pleased to find your car in their way. Also it should be mentioned that the hotel's car parking facilities are some distance away. But you will find the hotel staff courteous, friendly and Anglophone, and the hotel's facilities clean and modern.

Nice friendly staff, with a good breakfast and breakfast room, and a public area/reception which was ok, but not the sort of place to relax or linger. The location was very handy for the Metro and Croix Rousse is a decent area with superb views.

We stayed for three nights and found the beds very comfortable and bathroom clean, but small - just enough space to use the toilet! The bedroom, one of four accessed from a separate little corridor, was of a peculiar shape. Evidently the result of a much earlier conversion and division of a larger space. The rooms shown on the website looked nicer. Even with the window closed (in early March) there was noise from 'Paddy's Corner' below, with people congregating outside to have a smoke with their drink.

For this reason I would not be willing to stay here in the warmer months when the window would have to be open. However, the hotel was very much better than my previous Lyon experience and was good value in the bigger scheme of things, as generally, accommodation seems expensive, even compared with Paris or Nice.

I suspect the hotel is undergoing a process of improvement and I would give it a second look as long as the room wasn't above the bar!

Room Tip: Don't have a room over the bar!

I'm giving this an average rating for a 2 star hotel although the corridors were a little dingy and almost forgotten it seemed when rooms were given recent coat of paint. Our room was small but functional, bright and clean. The bathroom was clean but tired. Not expensive relative to hotel options in Lyon. Basic continental breakfast was 8 euros each. The front of the hotel has the word HOTEL painted on the facade but not its name so you'll have to look for the front door carefully.

What I did like however was the neighbourhood. It wasn't full of tourists but had many interesting alleys and streets but populated with people who actually live there. There's a lively street market outside the hotel as in many of the city's neighbourhoods. If you turn left coming out of the hotel and left again to head down the Grand Rue de la Croix-Rousse you'll find several interesting and charming restaurants on the side streets.

The Croix Rousse metro stop is 3 minute walk from the front door and will give you access to the city. The hotel has 3 parking spots in a secure underground garage if you like but there's parking on the streets all around.

Hotel looked Shabby and small, not good for long stay accomodation. The Booking Company and myself were told the cancellation fee would be waived, but 1 week later I find they have taken 144.00 Euro out of my card, I am an aged pensioner and that is a lot of money to me.

Madame,

we are suprised that you have given such a disapointing opinion for our hotel, you reserved 30 nights in our hotel thinking it was a appartment hotel (self catering) how is that possible??? when you arrived at our hotel you remarked that you had made a mistake and cancelled the totality of your stay: you didn't sleep once in our hotel, our receptionist found a self catering accomadation for you out of his own time and helped you put right your error. when you say that we had taken 144.00 euros from your bank account that's a lie we made you pay only èé euros, only one night, because they are the rules accorded with booking which is that every reservation not cancelled 24 hours before your arrival, the first night will be paid your reservation made me reject clients and potential clients. it's very annoying to be criticized by a person who has never slept at our hotel and is the only person responsible for their error

Small but clean and comfortable room decorated in a modern-deco style.

15-20 min walk to eat streets Rue de Garet & Rue Verdi in the Opera area.

We were lucky enough to experience an excellent street market on Saturday morning (the best we've seen in France to date).

We only stayed 1 night but wish we had stayed longer. Would definitely stay here agian on our next Lyon vist.

I like this hotel, having stayed here several times before, during and after the recent renovation. After is best. The rooms are small but clean, well decorated, comfortable and air conditioned. Ours had an orthopaedic mattress which took some getting used to on the first night but was bliss thereafter.

The hotel is on a busy street but, at least on the upper floors, pretty quiet. The staff are friendly and the self service breakfast is plentiful and good. Location is fantastic – the Croix Rousse is a great part of the city with a village atmosphere and the hotel is a one minute walk from the Croix Rousse metro and a ten minute journey from there to the centre of town.

At well under 100 euros a night B&B for two, this is an excellent choice for anyone staying in Lyon. If you happen to have friends or business in the Croix Rousse, it’s a complete no brainer.

Room Tip: Upper rooms will have less traffic noise. The lift has a mind of its own but the 5th floor is worth...

This hotel is located very well: close to the subway station and walking distance to the center (only for the way to, beacuse coming back is uphill). Easy parking in the surroundings and right in front there is the famous Croix Rousse market, but you don't here the noise. The hotel itself is clean with nice all-violet design. The breakfast (not included) is rich and good. There is a very popular bakery and a busy brasserie nearby, besides a stand with marvellous hoysters! Just ask for the code to get in if you arrive at night.
