Owner description: The Plum Lyon kitchen welcomes you to come for cooking lessons in the city center of Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France. Located in the ancient silk-worker's district on the hill of the Croix Rousse, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Plum Lyon Teaching Kitchen is offering seasonal market classes, classic French cooking, children's workshops in English, and single subject ateliers that cover a chosen technique or theme in French cuisine. Seasonal market classes include a tour of the Croix-Rousse market. We accommodate 6-8 students per class. There is plenty of opportunity for hands-on learning in our classes.

I did this cooking class with my wife and our 15 year old daughter. We loved it! Lucy is really knowledgeable, a great teacher, and fun to be around. There were 3 others in our class which really added to the experience - we got to know them a bit and we all got along really well. It was exactly as advertised - a trip to an excellent open air market, then cooking and eating and cooking and eating. We really did learn a lot. My wife - who has never enjoyed cooking until this - enjoyed it as much or more than anyone else. Lucy is really talented - she took her cues from what our group wanted to learn and eat and then combined that with what was freshest and best at the market to put together a perfect menu. Also, the facility is first rate - both functionally and aesthetically. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn and enjoy.

Plum Lyon Teaching Kitchen was a memorable cooking experience, led by an American (Lucy) who is a certified French pâtissière. We met at 9 am and then walked up the hill with Lucy to visit the local farmers market while she gave us a walking tour of Lyonnais food that has its roots in Roman times. She instructed us about interesting facts relating to the architecture (former silk works, how workers came together to create Lyonnais style food). As she walked us through the market, we discussed what was fresh and what we should cook. We choose some beets, nice looking duck breast, water cress for escargot and a beet salad, and lemons for lemon tarts prepared 2 ways.

We visited a wonderful cheese shop for our fromage course as well as a boulangerie for our bread.

There were 5 of us cooking that day, along with a sous chef to assist as well. Lucy wrote out the menu and we each were given something to do with each dish – from preparing and rolling out the dough for the two lemon tarts, mashing the lemons and splitting up the lemon filling for the standard tart and rustic tart; mixing the escargot butter, stuffing the snails; prepping the potatoes and preparing them for sautéing; mixing the water cress stuffing and ‘dressing’ for the layered beets, and finally salting and preparing the duck breast.

All 7 of us easily fit into the large kitchen and it all came together as we sat around a large table and enjoyed the various courses along with selected local wine to accompany.

While Lucy was not the typical local that we have run into at other cooking classes (Morocco, Spain), she obviously knows her cooking and was able to translate this for her ‘students’. We all left with copies of the recipes and a little more familiar with the ‘French’ style.

Thanks sooo much Lucy for sharing you knowledge of France and French cooking with us. We certainly will consider another course next time we visit Lyon.

We were in Lyon in October'13 for 3 days. We have attended "Pate a choux: Profiterols and Eclairs" class and it was our best 3 hour in Lyon by far. Lucy's hospitality and the warm atmosphere she provides in her kitchen is fantastic, you are totally losing track of time. My girlfriend is a professional pastry chef but even she has learned a lot from this course. Although Lucy does not promises any high level, professional techniques, believe me you don't need to know anything else to make your perfect eclairs at home. Don't forget to ask for her suggestions for diner and some kitchen shopping. I wonder how are the other classes... Definitely recommended activity in Lyon. Thank you Lucy!

We've been there in august, 2013. Our cooking team was really international. There were two americans, two russians, Sarah from Britain and Lucy from France. Lucy shown us the market and fromagerie, she told a lot about french vegetables, fruits, meat and poultry and even eggs. Then we went to the kitchen and cooked perfect lunch with Les oeufs en meurette de Bernard Loisseu, Magret de Canard and fleurs de courgette, and Tarte Tatin. We've told a lot around the table and tasted wines and cheeses.
There was surprise to get postcard from Lucy after returning home.

It was a thoroughly professional experience in every respect. I would recommend Plum Lyon to anyone looking for a cooking experience in Lyon and wanting to learn more about French cuisine.
