“Nice location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2011

The hotel is well situated in the old town ((although a day or two in the old town is enough to see the sights) in a nice renaissance building. Breakfast was quite good for a French hotel breakfast. The room was small, but good value for a family of four.

Room Tip: A bit of noise in rooms facing the street

We stayed here for 2 nights in May 2010. The hotel was centrally located - which was great. The room we had was fairly small, but that was expected. The bathroom was good. The free Wifi was great. We lost one of our wallets one day when we were there, and when we couldn't report it on the internet, the guy at the front desk offered us his cell phone to call CIBC/Diners Club to cancel the cards. The hotel was a bit noisy at night, as you heard the coming/goings of people, as the staircase was close to every room, but wasn't a big issue for us!

Good directions from railway station to the hotel. The owner had noted my request for a light room. He provided me with a map and marked the places that might be of interest. Excellent English in contrast to my poor French. Convivial little breakfast room. Lots of stairs to the top floor but I knew the owner had warned me of that at time of booking. Great location for the old part of town and easy access to C3 bus from Lyon Part Dieu station. I travel light so I walked to the station when I left . Wandering through the streets in the general direction of the station with stops for photos and exploring squares took about 45 minutes. TV had slightly dodgy reception on all but ARTE channel otherwise great place. I would stay there again without a doubt.

Others have extolled the location of the hotel. You really can walk just about everywhere from there, and public transportation serves it well too.
We were very happy with our room on the second floor (226, I think...) What originally was a shared bathroom is now the private bath for the room so the space actually incorporates the bathroom and the hall which joins it to the bedroom. Hence, lots of space, which is unusual in old hotels like this.
Our bed was very comfortable and the room was extremely quiet. The continental breakfast was typical and satisfying. The computer in the lobby was handy.

What we enjoyed most about the hotel, though, was the proprietor, Dominique. He clearly loves his property and is very proud and pleased to talk about its history. In addition he enjoys good food and has impeccable recommendations for dining in the area, and not just high-priced ones. He sent us to several "bouchons" which would have escaped our notice. Each one was superb.

Definitely great value for the price. We would stay there again.

As others have noted, you really can't beat the location. And it's on the same bus line as the Gare Part Dieu, so it's easy to get to the one place in the city you want to go that would be a pain to walk to, especially with bags.

The one thing I want to highlight is that they're clearly responding to the noise problem, because the room I stayed in (right above the door, probably the noisiest location) had a new window wall put in front of the windows. It shortens the room by about a foot, but the new windows are very big and don't block any light, but best of all, it makes the room extremely quiet. Even being there on a Saturday night, we had no problem at all with noise.

It appears the whole place is getting revamped a bit, and it's still in progress (our new wall/windows had not yet been painted to match the room), but they're certainly addressing the noise issues.

Pro:
-location, location, location. This hotel is in the old part of Lyon which is breathtaking. Just step out of the hotel and you feel you are hundreds of years in the past. Go into the traboules, walk the cobblestone streets, all amazing.
-if you take one of the front facing rooms, they are huge (especially by European standards).
-if you take one of the front facing rooms the bathrooms are huge. This room had a full size tub and shower.
-front desk is very helpful
-they have a very good continental breakfast but there is an extra charge.
-free wifi
-great atmosphere. The rooms have a real European feel.
-huge windows with shutters (lots of daylight streaming into the room)

Cons:
-no elevator so you need to lug your luggage up a winding stair case (luckily we were on the second floor so it was not much of chore).
-can be noisy. We faced the street and the noise from people is quite loud. Being there in January, during the week, the noise was not too bad, but I’m not sure I would have liked it on a weekend night in the summer.
-no in room safe

Summary:
We loved this hotel. The room, the location, the staff, all made for a wonderful experience. BUT I am not sure I would have been so happy in the summer, take ear plugs if you go at that time.

I had a look at one of the inside rooms, they would be a lot more quiet but they were significantly smaller and darker.

Well, we came back. We liked the place two years ago, and we liked it again this time.

In a way it's a typical French city 2-star hotel, so don't expect a lot of space or huge comfort or an elevator; but it's beautifully clean, it's very well run and extremely friendly.

This hotel is in a renovated centuries-old historic building situated in a pedestrian street in the heart of the old city. Walk down the pedestrian street, and you quickly reach an excellent tea house, then a whole selection of restaurants offering local fare. All this is within a quarter mile or so, near the river Saone.

It's easy to get around the city by subway or trolleybus.
