“Beautiful property, uncomfortable room!”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

Villa Florentine has an exceptional location. High above the city of Lyon. There are incredible views of the city from anywhere in the property. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We had breakfast in their restaurant once, it was a la carte but exceptional ingredients. Service was a little slow. The pool area is beautiful, on the rooftop. Here, service was very good. Our room was the least pleasant factor during our two night stay. As we were checking in, the clerk told us while casually conversing with us that they were fully booked. That's why we didn't request a room change. Room 16 was facing the city and had an incredible bird's eye view. But...it was a "loft". The sitting area and bathroom were in the lower level and the bedroom above it connected by a spiral staircase. This was the "killer"! Try going to the bathroom in the middle of the night down a spiral staircase!! And the fact that it was on two levels made it feel a little "cramped". When we checked out it felt like a scene right out of "Downton Abbey" with the staff waving goodbye as we drove off!

Room Tip: If you have difficulty with stairs, be sure not to get the loft suites.

Dear corina 58,

I am delighted to hear that you appreciated your stay with us and the location of our property.

Our 28 rooms and suites all have their own charm: Views over the roof tops of Lyon or not, French wooden ceilings, mezzanines, terraces or balconies, mosaic stone arch, tiled or wooden flooring or private sauna ...
When a room does not satisfy a guest, and if we have the availability we usually suggest another room, I do hope this was your case.

I very much look forward to seeing you again and thank you for taking the time to poste your message on TripAdvisor.

Sincerely

Jérôme MONTANTEME.

From the moment we parked our car outside the hotel (after a bit of a struggle with the directions suggested by the sat.nav.), we were greated by the helpfull staff of the hotel. Our car and luggage was immediately taken care of and we received a warm welcome and an efficient and pleasant check in. As we were guided to our room, where our luggage had allready arrived, we were also given a personal tour of the hotel and it's amenities - in fluent English. The hospitality and attention to detail which the staff displayed was nothing but excellent.

The exterior and interior of the hotel is of a very high standard and our room was huge and very comfortable. The spa area, pool and poolbar was an excellent place to relax after a "strenevous" day in Lyon, and recharge before a wonderful dinner experience at the hotels outstanding Michelin star restaurant, Les Terraces de Lyon (which really deserves it's own review). The location of the hotel is superb on the hillside above the old city of Lyon, with magnificent views of the city.

We enjoyed a package deal which gave us a wonderful deluxe room, champagne at our arrival, and a set gourmet menu at Les Terraces de Lyon, and also an excellent breakfast next morning. The hotel package deals are definitely good value and something to consider.

Our only regret was that we only booked one night, as we were on our way further south. The hotel was in every way an amazing experience, and we loved every minute of our stay. This was one of - if not The - highlight of our four weeks holiday in France. Lyon is a marvellous city, and Villa Florentine is an amazing hotel, and we have no choice but to return to Lyon and the fantastic Villa Florentine. If you want to treat yourself with the perfect hotel splurge - Villa Florentine is the place to go - you will be pampered!

Our last but certainly not least stay during our 19 day trip around France 9/2012. From the moment we walked through the doors to check in....we adored the staff here as they were helpful, engaging, and could predict our needs before we would! Lyon is a wonderful city and exceeded our expectations. The Villa sits high in a hill overlooking the entire city and on clear days you can see Mount Blanc in the distance.

It is beautifully maintained and hospitable. Clean and modern while it still holding onto its renaissance features. The pool area was just beautiful. We did not get a chance to dine on premise while we were guests but others staying here said it was outstanding. It was an absolutely perfect last stop before heading back to Paris for the flight back to the US.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights on the Forfait Dolce Vita and had a room in the main part of the Hotel. We received a friendly welcome and introduction to the hotel, and in perfect English too.

Our room was pleasantly cool despite the heatwave outside, and remained so. The hotel is a refurbished convent (and other older buildings) based on a hill in Old Lyon, and maintains a very peaceful aspect. The on-site gym is small, but well furnished with cardio machines and free weights, and with just enough space to roll a stretch matt out. The terraces by reception or by the pool are lovely places to enjoy both a view of the city below and an aperitif - which we did, before heading into the town below for our evening meals. We had booked slightly last minute and were aware that there would be no space in the hotel restaurant, however the concierge did a fantastic job of recommending another good restaurant in the city. There are a lot of steps to descend if heading into town, but for us, they added to the charm. Breakfast on the terrace was certainly a meal to linger over, I would return again purely on the strength of the breakfast (which were fruits, cereals, yoghurt, pastries, fresh fruit juice, eggs to choice, smoked salmon and something with bacon - nothing unusual, but cooked and served perfectly).

The room furnishings were a touch on the old fashioned, however they were good quality, and not ugly. The shower wasn't the best I've ever used, it took a while to adjust to temperature and the power wasn't brilliant, however, it was adequate and caused no problems. The bed was very comfortable, and as the room was a perfect temperature despite the heat outside I enjoyed the best night's sleep I had had for a while.

The toiletries provided were of a good quality, and the hair dryer was well powered. Bottled water was provided, and more importantly replaced - thank you very much for this Villa Florentine. An iron and ironing board were provided on request, and my husband was quite amused at the offer to arrange any ironing required for him, a very thoughtful touch.

The staff were very attentive and the hotel was very comfortable. This was our first trip to Lyon, and having such a wonderful space to relax in made exploring a new city a real pleasure.

I decided to write this review because the previous two were written by people must have been there at the same time as us, and they seemed to be written about an entirely different hotel. It is a lovely place. The staff are, if anything, over-attentive. Sometimes there seemed to be three different people all attempting to do the same thing for us! We had no problem with getting help with the luggage - we didn't even have to ask for it. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well. The room (an ordinary one) was pleasantly furnished and large. I'd booked us a package that included bottles of champagne and they appeared with little cakes ready in the room for when we got back from looking at things. Very nice to take to the terrace to drink whilst looking at the view. Obviously on one night when we came back late, they had been checking to ensure that the ice in the bucket had not melted. As I said, the staff are attentive. I had no problem getting a table in the restaurant. The booking confirmation had asked one to contact them in advance if you wanted a table. I had done that - but less than a week before. So I think with a little planning in advance eating at the restaurant should not be a problem. Normally for good restaurants it is wise to book and this is a very good one so worth making the effort. We had an excellent meal - I particularly recommend the quenelle de langoustine. Some reviewers make a big play of the number of steps down to the city. We are verging on the elderly, my husband walks with a stick and I almost decided not to book us into the hotel because of that. We found no problems walking up and down the five minutes to the old town below along the pavement. So all in all this is a place I fully recommend and will probably return to when next in Lyon

I was expecting for the rate of what they call a "Junior Suite" at 480 eur/night excluding Breakfast to have a room with a little bit of space but this was not the case. This Hotel need an urgent refurbishment. From the wall paper which had his best time to the poor furniture it was a total disappointment. The bed was on the mezzanine which is very uncomfortable as the bathroom and toilets is one floor away. No separate Shower. As a welcome gift some water and the most boring fruit of the season, 3 apples...for a Relais & Chateaux I was speechless. The sofa was as hard as a melon and very uncomfortable as well as in fact it was a sofa you could transform in an additional bed. The airco was smelly and uncontrollable. And to finish the Duvet was made of polyester ! The staff is very friendly and the view is very nice but never again.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for taking time to share your opinion and for choosing the Villa Florentine for your stay in Lyon.

I am delighted to hear that you appreciated our staff and the location of our property.

Concerning your remarks on the room, I thank you for your justified and constructive words and greatly appreciate your interest in the values that are ours.
Our 28 rooms and suites all have their own charm: View Lyon or not, French ceiling, mezzanine, terrace or balcony, mosaic, stone arch, flooring or private sauna ...
For your information, a renovation of our rooms is being finalized for 2013.

I would just like to draw your attention to the fact that the size of our Junior suites are between 37 and 57 sqm. I am very sorry to hear that the size and layout of your room was not what you expected. In general we manage to accommodate last minute deceptions by proposing another room in the same category.

A great location in Lyon with amazing views over the city. Rooms are decorated in the 1980's style and require full refurbishment. We were disappointed to be paying for one of the more expensive suites and yet could not get dinner in the hotel. Staff were helpful and friendly but rather scarce!! The swimming pool area is lovely.
