We booked our meal through the Ideal Gourmet website so had paid upfront (€140 for 2). We were greeted with a glass of Champagne and proceeded to enjoy a small bite and 5 soups served in differing shotglasses (the cream of scallop with chorizo was stunning). Only after this did we have our starters! The meal was wonderful (8 courses including amuse bouches and tea/coffee), we were treated wonderfullly by our hosts and the chef even came over to see if we enjoyed our meal. A fantastic treat for a special occassion and not to be missed.

Before heading to Lyon, we found recommendations on Chowhound for this and other restaurants in Lyon. We ate at six of what were touted as the “best” restaurants and by far L’Alexandrin was our favorite. In fact, the dinner we enjoyed there in March is among one of the best meals we’ve had in recent memory. (I am a sucker for Le Cinq in Paris, and while L’Alexandrin’s room could not compare with theirs, the food transported me – to heaven – in the same way.)

As truffles were still in season, we opted for the Truffle Menu, where each course (except dessert) either featured or was accented by the beautiful Périgord Truffle. The perfume of the lovely thinly shaved truffle discs was intoxicating and their flavor elevated every morsel of food. Even the intermezzo sorbet had a sliver of truffle!

Before the truly decadent truffled dishes, the dinner was preceded by a selection of unique, amazingly delicious amuse bouche. Chef Laurent Rigal seems to have an innate sense of how to marry flavors in unexpected ways that explode with an almost sensual finesse.

We will certainly be back to L’Alexandrin the next time we are in Lyon.

The only negative that I could find here is that there was only one staff person with solid English skills, but that really is more our problem, and our negative, than theirs.

While expensive, this meal cost about half of what it would have in Paris; so……a relative bargain for a memorable meal. Loved it!

Compared to some of the other top notch restos I had a chance to enjoy in Lyon, this truly didn't live up to its rep. Had a menu fixe, but 2 of the three courses were disappointing, and the cheese was mediocre. The service was also condescending .
There are much better options out there for the same price or less.

Exelent experience I recommend this great resto. Even in Paris I taste a such wonderful dinning. Attention In weekly days are magnificent. This rest should be a Michelin :( category. We traveled in a family trip and it could be for a couple time

We arrived in Lyon on a Friday afternoon, and after a little research web research uncovered a well thought of establishment near our hotel's area of Part Dieu for dinner.

The restaurant is small and intimate like many others in Lyon. The chef spent a great deal of time talking with customers seeking feedback on the dishes which we found interesting, although we weren't able to participate due to our lack of French speaking skills.

We opted for the least expensive set menu (60 euros per person), the 'Spirit of Lyon' and through the course of the evening were delighted and wondered how any of the other menus could surpass the food which we were presented and enjoyed.

The starter was a plate of five small amuse bouche style individual delights. This was followed in turn by a perfect pig's trotter dish, a pike fish quennelle (famous Lyon speciality) in crayfish broth, a fennel ice with Chartreuse liqueur refresher, chicken and morels, then the cheese course and a dessert of our choosing. In addition we were treated to a pre dessert and incredible petit fours with coffee.

Each course before our main desserts brought new taste experiences and were simply brilliant. The desserts in our opinion did not reach quite the same level of gastronomy but we really couldn't fault it too much and it is probably due to the exceptionally high standards set by preceding courses. Before starting we had high expectations for what 60 euros per person could bring, by the end we felt it a bargain.

We would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone seeking a long, varied and generous food journey.
