I was lucky to spend 4 great days visiting Lyon and surrounding area, choosing Hotel des Celestins as my base while in town.

Getting to the hotel itself was fairly easy right from Lyon–Saint Exupéry Airport. Once you arrive at the airport, take the Rhônexpress tram directly to Lyon Part-Dieu train station. When arriving at the train station, walk directly through the station all the way to the opposite end of the station and exit from those doors. At this point, to purchase your bus tickets, take a slight right and walk to the first set of bus shelters - you'll see a few machines to purchase your bus tickets. From the ticket machine, walk right until you see the bus sign for bus C9. Get on this bus and you'll be getting off at the very last stop (Bellecour). At this point, it's just a quick walk to the hotel - luckily the city has numerous signs all over the place with directions to popular hotels in and around the area (including this one) so you'll have no problems finding the hotel. I only provide these instructions because once I had arrived at Part-Dieu, it was VERY difficult finding anyone who spoke english who could explain where to find bus tickets or find the bus...so hopefully this helps someone out just a bit!

Anyways.......back to the hotel itself! The location of the hotel was great in my opinion, as it was located very well, just a few steps away from Place Bellecour which makes it a good launch pad to check out the city. There's a lot of (very!) expensive shops in and around the immediate area (i.e. stores with $800 belts, $1200 mens shoes, etc.) so you probably won't find any shopping bargains close by, but those who love to shop will find enough to keep them busy in the surrounding area no doubt. Bus and subway stops were all closeby, so it's easy to get in and out of the area if necessary, although a lot of the city is walking friendly which is a definite plus.

The room itself (non-theatre view) was exceptionally quiet - although I guess facing nothing but a wall probably helped a bit ;)
While a bit on the tired side (could use some new furniture for sure), the room was very well kept, clean, with a somewhat new-ish bathroom and a very comfortable bed, small TV with a handful of channels and WiFi (need to get a password from the check in desk downstairs). The bed was extremely comfortable, so you'll have no problems getting a great night sleep. Of course, the room is a bit on the small side, but this is Europe, so it's nothing out of the ordinary.

Speaking of the check in desk, the hotel has some of the friendliest staff I've encountered in all my travels - they'll go out of their way to make you feel comfortable, answer all of your questions and treat you like a valuable guest. Two thumbs to the entire team; it's definitely appreciated, especially in a new place where you don't really know a whole heck of a lot!

Although I was usually out too early most mornings, breakfast is available every morning in the hotel. In addition, a place to do laundry is a short walk away for anyone who's traveling for an extended period of time.

Overall I would strongly recommend this hotel to any first-time (or repeat) visitors to Lyon, as it's well located, relatively well priced with an amazing staff.

Our room was compact (though not as small as some French hotel rooms I have stayed in) but clean, quiet and comfortable; larger rooms are available. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It is a really good location for exploring Lyon, sitting between the Rhone and the Saone, with plenty of shops, restaurants and museums nearby. We went pretty much everywhere on foot, but the Metro is very close by.

Hotel des Celestins is located between the Rhone and Soane Rivers near Place Bellecour, in an ideal location to explore Lyon by foot or public transport, or to simply shop. Staff were friendly and very helpful, both prior to arrival and during our stay. The staff are the best attribute of this hotel. Our 'Superior' room fitted the hotel's description in terms of space (but note rooms are small), facilities (comfortable bed) and outlook, but the walls and carpet were shabby through age and shoddy maintenance, rather than poor daily room service. From other Tripadvisor reviews it may be that some rooms have been refurbished, but our's had not, and it needed it. The original conversion to a hotel was not high quality, and time has taken its toll since then. The lift did not work one morning, the wi-fi was out for three days, and the shower fluctuated wildly between scalding hot and cold (reported three times but not fixed). Breakfast was good, and good value, although local cafes and boulangeries also offer excellent breakfast (try Francotte around the corner). The hotel entrance is a narrow hallway (shared by other building occupants) leading to a tiny lift and staircase. It is not particularly salubrious, or so it appeared to us when we met a young woman on the stairs one night who was dressed as if for window display in Amsterdam. The lift takes you to a narrow hallway that enters into a room that serves as hotel reception and breakfast area, that we felt was crowded on some of the mornings we ate there. The hotel has many good attributes, but if you value quality in room fittings and/or tasteful decor, and good maintenance, be prepared to pay more and go elsewhere nearby.

Room Tip: Roadside rooms have an outlook, and noise is not a problem with the double-glazed windows closed.

Only spent a night...but very happy with the experience. Bed and pillows were offering the best comfort we had in a long time. Air conditionning was quiet and working very efficiently. Our room was giving on the street and was very quiet. Personnel was friendly and helpfull.

Room Tip: Although the small room would of met our standards; it's pretty small. You need to ask for the medium size room.

My Husband and I spent 4 nights in Lyon May 2013. The hotel Celestin is small ,charming and very well located in a central part of the old town between the 2 rivers .It is surrounded by upmarket stores . We had the Petit Prince suite overlooking the rooftops ,which meant peace and quiet especially if you like the windows open. The room was very well appointed with a separate toilet and shower . The reception staff were most helpful in arranging authentic restaurants that the locals frequent and even a dentist. We highly recommend this hotel if you don't want to stay in a chain and wish to experience French hospitality.
