Hotel des Celestins

Lyon is a lovely and interesting city, and the location of this hotel and the owners' hospitality made it even more enjoyable and engaging. It's in the heart of the shopping area of Presqu'ile, near the Metro exchange at Place Bellecour and the pedestrian bridge to Vieux Lyon. There are many, many good restaurants within walking distance, and the staff is helpful with recommendations and reservations. The desk is staffed until 10:00 p.m.; they are all personable and speak English. One of the friendly, helpful owners (Laurent and Shireen) is onsite much of the day, so it is like a B&B. If you take advantage of the very good breakfast buffet (ham, cheese, breads, yogurt, fresh fruit, nuts and dried fruits, hard and soft boiled eggs, jams) you will get to know them and the other guests. Laurent delights in introducing people. The rooms are comfortable and clean, each one different. The breakfast room and the guest rooms are decorated with treasures Laurent found at the flea market, as well as some fine artwork. The wifi is free and consistent. Rooms have their own temperature controls, heat and AC. There is front door security and an elevator. We would definitely stay here again if we return to Lyon.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra to get a larger room.

A highlight of our stay was the staff at Hotel des Celestins who went out of their way to recommend and book a fantastic Bouchon for dinner and their general friendly nature!
We were upgraded to a larger room, very clean and suited our needs. The bed was incredibly comfortable. Would highly recommend.

I chose this hotel for a friend due to the numerous positive comments, the fairly central location in an ancient part of the city, most attractions and good restaurants within walking distance. However we were a bit taken aback by the crammed entrance, backpacker's wall painting and narrow staircase.
the atmosphere was indeed more like a backpacker's hostel, fine except for the 3 star rates...
fortunately the reception staff (obviously overworked foreign students) were very pleasant, efficient and friendly. rooms were ok if a bit tiny. globally a fine central hotel, but overrated due probably to the central location. however I scouted a few others nearby and will try the hotel de Paris next visit, if only for the designer rooms.

Good morning,
I am glad you enjoyed the location and friendliness of our staff. We are a family owned hotel and try to welcome our guests as friendly visitors. We are defenitevely not a chain standardized establishement but much more like a bed and breakfast. Truly yours,
Laurent

The ground floor entrance is strange but go up 1 flight and you are met by very nice and competent people. Location is superb - easy walking to most places. Parking near. Our top floor suite was excellent, spacious and quiet. Good breakfast. Price was good for a major city. I would stay here anytime. Many high end fashion stores close if that interests. Several small good restaurants around there. Hotel staff helpful.

Room Tip: Get a suite. Not much more and much bigger. 5th floor.

The staff were wonderful. They all spoke English and were more than happy to go over our maps and direct us to the sights of Lyon. Ideal location for exploring the city and for high end shopping. Rooms were quiet and clean.

We enjoyed our three night stay in the beautiful city of Lyon. The city is very walkable and safe. Interesting architecture and history and plenty of interesting sites to keep you busy. Everything that you could need in terms of shopping options and restaurants. Our teenagers loved the stay. The hotel is located in a perfect spot! Would highly recommend! The staff are very friendly and accommodating.

Room Tip: Stayed in the Celestins Suite - plenty of room for our family of two adults and two teenagers. The r...

We chose the Hotel des Celestins from Trip Advisor as usual. There is a loading zone in front to unload luggage and parking is nearby so even though it's in the city center it's not a problem. Being in the city center at night allows you to enjoy the site all lighted up a night which are beautiful. You have to ring the buzzer to gain access which provides security in a down town location. There is a small elevator for 2 people and 2 bags. We had a little misunderstanding in the room rate, we were quoted on rate but then paying were quoted a higher rate. My wife inquired and the receptionist said she had had a mistake. My wife suggested that it was fine, just throw in one breakfast and we would pay for another. She said that she could not do that and actually then quoted us a rate lower than the first wrong rate? The room was on the back side away from the street with no noise. It was small of course but standard for what we have seen in France. Bathroom with shower only, small also of course. Clean with Free wifi though! The receptionist recommended and local restaurant called Le Sud which I also rated. Over all a good one night stay to see the sites in Lyon on our three week Rick Steve's route tour of France. They stored our bags so we did not have to drag them back to the car while we toured the city in the morning. I see some reviews say a little run down, everything was fine in our room, the halls and stair are tight so sure they are a little dinged up from the luggage but it gave it old world charm! We passed on the breakfast having fallen in love with local pastry shops, we actually ate on the steps of the memorial in the square in front of the cathedral. Ride the tram up the hill, it's a long uphill walk otherwise.
