Hostellerie de Perouges

very very nice and very different....something you cannot find anywhere, sleeping in a 13th century house with period furniture, four-poster bed and all that kind of stuff all around!!
Definitely to come back, of course no more than 2 nights.

Last Saturday we stayed one night at the Hostellerie. We could choose our room, there were many vacancies. We chose a double room in the annex.Cost 120 Euros. It had two single beds and an adequate bathroom. It was clean but not luxurious. The village is very quiet at night. The meal was overpriced and not very good.I would chose another restaurant in the neighbourhood if I would go again. The staff is also mediocre. The whole place could do with some bright colours and some paint. The breakfast was good but 15 Euros!

We really love the setting and the old atmosphere but... we were first put into an incredibly cold room. Feel sorry for the young couple that ended there after we were moved..and I forgot my favorite nightgown in the room and have never received an answer to my e-mail asking them to please mail it home to Portugal at my cost. Pity....

We stayed at the Ostellerie in May, 2005. Perouges itself is a well-restored and charming medieval town. We chose to stay here because it is a picturesque town that is close to Bourg-en-Bresse and the fantastic Monastery of Brou (40 minutes one way) – which we highly recommend visiting, though the rest of Bourg-en-Bresse is nothing to write home about. We would stay at the hotel again if we wanted to return to the Bourg-en-Bresse area. Although the hotel has some shortcomings, it is the most unique place to stay near Bourg-en-Bresse.

Be warned that the approach to Perouges is somewhat confusing, and if you are staying in town, you must drive through the medieval gate into the town. The hotel’s room offerings appear to vary widely – there are four buildings to the hotel. We stayed in one of the less expensive buildings – the room was €103. The room was clean and acceptable but not out of the ordinary and the bed sagged. It did have a writing table and desk chair, and the WC was separate from the modern bathroom (tub/shower). There were no English-language TV channels. Our hotel room, though on the main street, was quiet because after dark the whole town is quiet. The hotel offers free secure parking but the gate is locked after 8 pm. Hotel guests can use the salon on the first floor of our building, which was quite spacious and well furnished.

The first night, we ate at the hotel’s restaurant, which is recommended in some travel guides and is apparently liked by the French since the restaurant was crowded. We, however, found the restaurant food to be indifferent and overpriced for the quality. An alleged dish of veal turned out to be more like a rather elderly cow. The service was not very attentive because of a large business group in the adjoining room which occupied the attention of much of the wait staff. The maitre’d was rather aloof and dismissive. The restaurant in which we ate the second night was significantly less expensive but only passable food.

Perouges the town is delightful place in which to stroll. If you are driving from the north to the Perouges area, try to stop in Autun to see the cathedral and at the Chateau de Cormatin for one of the guided tours of this exceptional chateau.

The room we had was large and comfortable but rather basic, with three flights of stairs to be climbed, but that doesn't matter because the hotel and the village are so pleasant. This is an excellent medieval village that is justly proud of not having any external electricity wires. The restaurant is also excellent. Note the floor tiles!

A stunning hotel full of character situated ona hilltop with beautiful views across the surrounding countryside. The rooms vary in size and comfort I have only stayed in the turret rooms which are very comfortable with good sized bathrooms (although no proper shower), TV etc.The restaurant is fantastic as you would expect but rather inflexible, closing early- the last orders have to be taken by 9pm.Definitely worth a visit.
