“Beautiful renovated house”
Reviewed 21 June 2013

Stayed only one night - but would have been happy to stay longer in this beautiful house. Very well decorated bedroom with comfortable bed. So interesting to see the history of the house and how it had been renovated. Quite a walk into the centre - unfortunately we stayed on a Sunday night and nothing was open, we had to drive out to find somewhere to eat dinner. Well presented breakfast in the elegant dining room. Well worth a stay

Located in the city centre, near Cours Fauriel, but in a very calm area, this early 20th century guest house provides a very good ratio cost/quality.

My room was decorated in the French traditional baroque style, with a modern bathroom and a good range of amenities. Bed and pillows are fine and I did sleep very well.

Breakfast is excellent with state-of-the-art French bred, delicious marmalade, fresh fruit juice, coffee, fresh milk, yoghurts and... local made French croissants. It's been a long time without such a good French breakfast !

Catherine and her husband are very friendly.

If you stayed in Saint Etienne and likely to spend 100-120 Euros, I would recommend this guest house instead of modern hotels around.

Let's be honest, we're not really B & B people, but were blown away by the rooms and grandeur of this charming former silk merchant's maison. We stayed overnight in the middle of a week in Lyon, mainly to have a look at the (largely disappointing) Musée d’Art Moderne. The town is worth a visit for it's bustling old town and cautionary tale of 1950s modernist apartment design. (If you are an architecture buff, you can walk up the hill behind Villa Roassieux to see some living evidence of why Le Corbusier & colleague's so-called utopian cities got it wrong). Getting back to the Villa Roassieux, we were glad we stayed, and would recommend it highly for a weekend away or business trip.

Catherine and her husband were wonderful hosts, doing what ever they could to accomodate our needs. The Villa is very large with incredibly grand rooms but still feels very cosy and warm. It is close enough to walk to the downtown area depending on how much walking you want to do however you can catch a bus several streets away. The breakfasts are incredible and perfect to send you off on a day of site seeing and shopping. Lyon is close enough that you can jump on a train and be there within an hour. There is great shopping and food in the shopping centre directly across from the train station. Highly recommend Paul restaurant in Lyon and St. Etienne. As well the Opera House restaurant in St Etienne serves a great meal.

Its important to note for North Americans who are used to stores, shops and restaurants being open all the time its not that way in St Etienne. Check with Catherine about the hours because several times we came home with very little or no food for our dinners because we couldnt find anywhere open to eat or to buy food. When the shops are open the choices for fresh produce are terrific but plan ahead or you'll be sorry! Also they close everything between 12 and 2pm so everyone can go home for lunch and everything is pretty closed on Sundays and Monday mornings.
Loved the Villa and hope to go back some day!
