We stopped off in St. Etienne on the way to Italy and stayed at the Ibis near the station. Next door and obviously connected with the hotel is the Taverne de Maitre Kanter where we had dinner.
Excellent food, very good service and nice surroundings. When we entered the place was almost deserted, but by the time we were enjoying our main course the restaurant had filled up with happy diners. Good house wine and all in all the taverne added to the reputation of France for good food

This restaurant is like the other ones of the same brand I have been to. The food menu is long and quite diverse, the plates are generous and the combined menus are quite good. I suggest this restaurant if you are interested in a decent meal with seafood or Alsacian food. Some french and german beers are served there too.

The actual location is practical for travellers: just in front of the train station, but the parking is not amazing. The place was renovated recently, so it looks nice and modern. I did not find it too expensive, and it is open quite late.

Not far from railway station, you can have good alsatian food even in Saint Etienne. Taste a flammeküche, choucroute, sea food and tartare (raw meet) with a good Kanterbräu beer. Open till late, just a little too expensive. Be careful! La Taverne de Maître Kanter is a chain of food restaurants and quality can vary from restaurant to restaurant.
