Situated a little way down the shoreline from the Annecy tourist hub, Hotel Les Grillons offers the quiet spot to enjoy the surroundings and relax. Add to that wonderful dining (a different tasting menu each night) and wines, and a room overlooking the lake, and we did not want to leave! The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, especially when we wanted to do a spot of parapente. The only minor issue was the lack of a lift.

There is a certain spaciousness about Les Grillons which suggests that it is the sort of place where people come for a proper stay, rather than just for an overnighter on the way further south. We were only passing through, but we had no complaints - good-sized room, balcony, proper attention paid to food allergies. It is economical to go for half-board; the downside of that is that you have to eat what's put in front of you unless you let the kitchen know by a certain time (5 p.m., or something like that), but certainly on the night that we were there it was fine, if not earth-shattering. The proprietress has perfect English, by virtue of having one English parent.

The bar is a bit four-square and cream-leathery, but the barman is very happy to advise on his stock. I wanted an interesting digestif with my coffee; we narrowed it down to something local (I can drink cognac anywhere), and he produced something called ginepi, which is one of those flower-based alpine distillations which start by tasting faintly of aftershave - as if I'd know - but grow on one.

The site could be a bit better; it's separated from the lake shore by a busy highway, but not high enough up the slope for a really spectacular view. But that is to carp. The rubber on the ping-pong bats at the outdoor table is a disgrace; how else to account for my daughter beating me?

Have just returned from Hotel Les Grillons. We also found this hotel the best we have stayed in on the Continent. Also had 1st floor front balcony room. Wonderful views, company, staff, excellent dinners - like to return next year. Not too large but everything so clean, glowing with fresh plants & flowers. Pool spotless & warm. Had two swims in wonderful lake from private beach across the road. The view from the water was indescribable, I think it was just about the most enjoyable swim I have ever experienced. M.A.Stevens

Room Tip: Front of hotel, 1st floor balcony rooms. Lift being fitted this winter. No noise at night. No dres...

We stayed at this hotel as part of a package holiday, it looked OK on their webpage but we know not always to believe what places say about themselves.
However, this place was truly amazing!
The owners/hosts, Airole(spelling could be wrong) and her husband Sebastian (he is also the Chef) were most friendly and welcoming as were all the staff. They all spoke English which did not help my poor efforts at improving my French but hey, c'est la vie (did you see what I did there?)
The hotel is classed as a 3 star but worthy of more in my view. The rooms were excellent, the public areas were excellent and the food was really outstanding, a 4 course meal every night (my poor belly)
My wife Brenda spent the entire holiday calling the poor barman Ronaldo for which he was very flattered even though his name was also Sebastian (this must be a popular French name methinks.)
There is also a lovely pool area but because the holiday was jam packed with sightseeing we did not get chance to use it so alas, I never got to see my lovely wife in her bikini!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for 1st floor balcony rooms with magnificent views of mountains, lake and pool. We had room 3

Had a very relaxing holiday. Everything about this Hotel is brilliant, the staff all of them are very pleasant, the rooms, the food is amazing, and the pool really lovely. The views are wonderful. Nothing is too much trouble and you feel so well looked after. Lovely walk into Tallories, watch the bikes! Book a room with a lake view so nice.

Booked through Inghams, we were here 24th to 31st August, room 22 on the 2nd floor, dual aspect: car park (not at all unattractive) & lake view (only partly obscured by mature trees). The road in front is busy during the day but much, much quieter in the evenings, as is the two lane cycle track (pedestrians beware). The road behind is very quiet and well lit at night, ideal for pleasant after dinner strolls, accompanied by the chirpy gratings of the occasional 'grillon' hidden in the grassy roadside banks.

To be honest, the perfect spot in the vicinity for a hotel is where l'Abbaye sits in nearby Talloires but this is reflected in the prices and anyway, we didn't hear particularly glowing reports from guests staying there. The plus points of les Grillons, however, far outweigh the location minus.

The moment you walk into the Reception area (every single time) you are met with a genuine bright smile and friendly greeting, be it from Aurelie herself or the superb Receptionist whose name we should have requested but never did (shame) or even Sebastien, taking his turn at the front line when it's quiet in the kitchen. Nothing is too much trouble and it was so easy to forgive them for not preparing our packed lunches one day. They really care.

The set menu is displayed at the entrance to the restaurant each morning (breakfast is basic but more then adequate). If there's an item you don't fancy, let them know at reception and they'll willingly sort something out for you. My wife isn't as adventurous as me (not that there was anything particularly adventurous on the menu) and she often had a mixed salad as a first course- it was different each time and she enjoyed all of them. I stuck with the menu and it was truly excellent. You look at the plate in front of you and you think 'this'll never fill me up' but by the time you've chomped through your 4th wedge of delicious cheeses, you wonder where you're going to put the dessert.

The restaurant staff (except one abrupt, but otherwise polite and efficient waiter) bring your plate to the table and quickly explain each dish before you start eating. The plate itself is 'signed' in what I assume to be reduced balsamic vinegar (I thought it was a design on the plate before I smudged it). Presentation is a picture and the food is cooked to perfection. One or two people asked for their meat to be cooked a little more but I went with what was placed before me and I wasn't once disappointed. Sebastien loves his work and it shows.

The friendly barman relishes creating ambitious cocktails and mixes charm with polite humour for extra measure.

For those who may struggle with the stairs, there's a lift going in over the winter.

Well done, les Grillons, you deserve to be number one. We'll be back, that's for sure.

Aurelie and her husband who run Les Grillons are doing a most fabulous job. It is obviously family run with friendly staff who are enjoying their work.

It's just outside beautiful Talloires - a pleasant stroll along the lake gets you to the centre, but the best watersports are all very near the hotel, as is a stop for getting on the Boat trips.

The pool is beautiful - well designed for children and adults - surrounded by beautiful white wrough iron - all very French. Comfortable loungers and bar service make it hard to leave - but you must as there's so much to do!

The very best part of Les Grillons is the food. It is amazing. Having eaten in Michelin starred restaurants this really is up there with that. Every night was a joy and the children had a well adapted version - not the usual nuggets and chips which other places seem to think they always want to eat.

We will definitely be back.

Thanks again
The Riley Family

Room Tip: 2nd Floor , Lake & Pool view. We had a 50sqm family room which was huge.
