“The Faulty Towers of Val D'Isere”
Reviewed 4 January 2012

The faulty towers of Val D'isere, run by over weight owner dressed as a 1930 skier. Rooms are appalling, food OK. When you try and complaint about the terrible service due to being understaffed (not the staffs fault) they wheel out the 85 year old great grandma to deal with you, so you might as well talk to the wall.

Stayed 7 days 26th Feb 2011 in room 102, brilliant for a skier, no view but easy access to ski room. Plentiful hot water, comfortable mattress & reasonable linen. Large radiator in bedroom & bathroom for drying ski gear. I had booked this hotel having stayed there some years ago when the food was almost worthy of a Michelin star, alas no longer. Breakfast was ok. Unfortunately although the evening meal courses were well spaced and nicely presented and on good china they were so badly cooked. Soups were ok but second & main course dishes generally went back to kitchen 3/4 uneaten, they were so bad. Tasteless and tepid pasta dish, dry as wood “ cockerel“ chicken and at another meal "shoe leather" braised beef. How can a kitchen ruin braised beef. Sliver of liver with it was ok. Fish dishes were better but still nothing exciting. It seemed as if they cooked meat and blanched diced vegetables in the early evening, dressed the plate then kept warm rather than cooking to order. No saucing or seasoning to speak of. My partner or I were never asked what was wrong with uneaten food. Desserts were generally over sweet for my taste but other than the cheese board probably the best course of the meal. Good breads and a excellent cheese board. The staff were friendly and most obliging but I noted they were used to taking a lot of uneaten food from different tables back to kitchen. Good position to slopes with supermarket just around corner.

Stayed here for 4 nights with friends. We choose this as the location is excellent and it was half the price of Avenue Lodge where we had stayed last time. It is more traditional than Avenue Lodge and not as fancy, but it was perfectly adequate. We had junior suites which offered plenty of space and a balcony. Certainly a lot more space than the classic rooms at Avenue Lodge. The spa was small but good, steam room, sauna and jacquzzi and welcome at the end of each day.

The bar was friendly with a log fire and sofas, although we never ate at the restaurant.

I did chuckle at the carpet on the walls in the lift but that is me being very picky.

I would definately come back.

We gladly returned to the Savoyarde for our second year in a row, and could not imagine staying anywhere else in Val d'isere. Lovely family run hotel. Jean Francois and his family are the consummate hosts. The hotel feels like home instantly. Perfect location, five minutes from the slopes, and one block from the main street. Jacuzzi, steam and sauna after a day on the moutain. Great breakfasts, apres-ski lounge with wonderful bartenders. Fabulous fireplace. Staff is charming and accommodating. Rooms vary, but ours was perfect for a family of four. The only negative is lack of wifi in the rooms.

The location is great and the look and feel of the communal areas is nice. The staff were generally friendly and our room, overlooking the slopes was a defininte plus for the view! Disappointingly, the Spa wasn't open at all during our 4 night stay - one of the reasons for booking, and although we were advised we could go next door, that defeats the object of picking a hotel with a spa in situ! Also, the bar was incredibly expensive for what you got - 7 euros for a VERY small glass of red wine - considering it was a local savoire wine, I think that was way over the top - and the bar tender just explained my query about the volume being due to a large size glass - hmmmm.

Other than that, the breakfast buffett was plentiful and although we couldn't actually use our allocated locker due to the copious amounts of ski's the Swiss Ski team had for the racing, on a non-race weekend, the locker room is large and roomy, which again is a plus.

I was a bit disappointed with our stay as although we had a 25% discount for the low season, it was still an expensive hotel that had promised a Spa, but didn't come up with the goods. Would I stay there again? Only if everything was open - and they seriously looked at the bar prices - I'm happy to pay more in a hotel bar but I do expect not to be taken for a ride .. and I have to say that's a little bit how I feel. Shame, because I'd looked forward to staying there for a while.

found this hotel OK. I was not expecting much after seeing some previous reviews. The staff were fine, very helpful infact. The dining staff were VERY GOOD and gave alternatives each night if we did not like a certain item on set menu. Breakfast could be more extensive. Did not realise until the last few days that eggs could be done anyway u liked. Rooms basic, a bit small was suppose to be with a view, but the snow was stacked too high on the balcony. Had one room in lower ground flr- a bit dark. Good large clean ski room. Hotel location town center, 5mins walk frm lifts. BE WARNED-the gym is NOT a gym it is a plunge pool with a stationary bike. As usual because it was high season, one pays way too much for the hotels in ski resorts.
