“Great location, quality food & amazing staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2013

Positives - good sized room twin beds and clean bedding, balcony facing the mountain, excellent bathroom facilities, with hot shower and bath, AMAZING food and wine served, excellent breakfast, AMAZING and friendly staff and hotel manager. Great location, 3 min walk to gondola and funicular that take you up the mountain, and 2 min walk from bus stop that takes you in town (town is 5 min on the bus).

Negatives: No dry room, just a ski room which was a bit cramped when needing to put your boots on. Small communal area.

There is a split dinner service, which I thought I wasn't going to enjoy but I did, as it gave us the chance to go and explore the town a bit more rather than just staying in the hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a balcony facing the mountain, very nice views of the piste and mountain!

Went to this hotel as part of a group of 12, very small & basic rooms but its not like you spend much time there anyway. They were warm, clean and we slept well which is important. The staff are all English which was nice.

There were a couple in the group that could not eat certain foods - 1 being a vegan and two being lactose intolerant - this was not catered for very well for the first few days. even though they had paid £35 for a special diet catered to their needs, there were no options for the afternoon tea & cakes, and they were often just given fruit salad for pudding each night. This only improved after a complaint was made. Apart from this ongoing problem the staff were very nice.

No swimming pool, spa or anything like that which was disappointing. We went into the leisure centre in Val few nights which has great facilities.

Dinner each night was split into two groups as there was not enough room for everyone to eat at one time. It was alternated each night so one night you were 18:30 and next 20:30, which was too late for me! Canapés before dinner were always very good.

The hotel is located in La Daille, which is about a 5/10 min bus journey out of Val - the busses run every 10 mins until very late. the good thing about the location is that you are only a few minutes walk to the gondola which gives you access to Tignes, which we all preferred as we found that Val was quite flat in comparison.

As a whole the resort was fab, hotel was ok, but I think next time we'd stay in Tignes.

The holiday was booked late and represented very good value for money. The hotel is quite basic as other reviews suggest however it was warm; had comfortable beds and an endless supply of hot water even when fully booked.

What was really impressive though was the excellent food and service from all members of the staff team. The hotel manager (Ian) impressed from his first welcome speech and continued to do so for the rest of the week.

Our party would certainly book again; if we do we hope Ian and key staff are still there. Well done to the entire team; you certainly do an excellent job for Ski Total.

Room Tip: Keep an eye for for a late booking at a discounted price.

We first stayed here in 1990 & the rooms & facilities are from that era and really need an update. Having said that the basic requirements are all there. The rooms are not big but always warm & many have a balcony overlooking the slopes- we were in 205. The bathroom is small but there was always plenty of hot water and the beds were more comfortable than they looked. The staff and food however were excellent. The hotel manager and the Total rep were very attentive and always helpfull, in fact all the staff had a really friendly manner. The food was as good as we have ever had on ski hollidays, good quality, varied and extreamly well presented. Just a few negative points. Wifi was only really available in reception or the dining room & the dining room needed 2 sittings to accomodate all guests. In common with most ski accommodation the boot room is inadequate. Also getting to & from the coach to reception with cases is not easy, especially in the snow - 50 yds of slippery roads, iron steps & two sets of self closing doors. Overall though good skiers accommoidation well positioned close to the Furnival & the Daille.

I'll start with the positives - great location for the Funival and Daille gondola so piste access excellent and no big queues in the mornings. Very easy to get up the mountain pretty quick and of course the ski area itself is utterly fantastic. Free ski bus gives options too- heading accross to La Fornet is a good option to access that side of the mountain- go first thing, very quiet.
Hotel- we were totally spoilt last year in our TOTAL chalet, this was a very different experience in terms of hotel quality, service, food, etc. etc. Rooms are fine - basic, bit shabby, showers good. Our torn shower curtain never got replaced throughout the whole stay but hey, you're there for the skiing and apres... dont' miss La Folie Douce at the top of La Daille. We had a big group and the bar itself was WAY too small - could have done with the wall knocking through to make a communal area with a TV etc. so we could have watched the XGames. NEEDS a lounge area badly. Food good, tea & cake & the option of soup at 4pm is great esp if you are on late dinner (8.30 - which really is too late). Bar over the road above Supermarket serves AMAZING Grimbergen beer. Better than hotel option. Very handy supermarket opposite, closed between 12.30 and 4 ish though. For a budget trip- this suits fine although I'd choose a chalet over it anyday.

Overall this is a reasonably good hotel with a few niggles. Worth considering, but not perfect.

Location

The location is good. The hotel is near a couple of good lifts with a number of runs down to allow you to ski in/ski out. There is a frequent free bus to take you into the centre of Val, takes around 5 to 10 mins. Probably not as good as being in Val itself, especially if you like to go out a lot in the evenings.

Rooms/Facilities

The rooms are basic, eg no TV, but comfortable and clean. The showers are hot and powerful.

One of the downsides is that the bar is small and there is not much communal space. After a hard days skiing you want to relax on comfy chairs with your group, and there isn't enough space to do this.

There is wifi in the bar, which sometimes reached the rooms, but not always. This was a bit frustrating.

Food

There are 2 sittings for dinner. The early sitting is at 630 and the late sitting is at 830. Your group alternates between the two sitting. This is not too much of a problem, but clearly not as a good as choosing your own dinner time.

The evening meals were nice, with a good choice of options and variety during the week. There is a limited choice of average quality wines, which gets a bit repetitive after a whole week. Similarly the afternoon tea and cakes were good to come back to after a day on the slopes.

Unfortunately the breakfasts were not very good. The hot option was poor quality and essentially the same every day. The fruit was bruised, and the coffee fairly average. Shame that the same effort put into dinner wasn't put into the breakfast

Staff

The staff were friendly and welcoming.

First time with Ski Total and I would use them again. Staff and food was very good at this chalet hotel. Breakfast incl hot, afternoon tea and cakes and dinner included. You also got choice for dinner and wine was included. Hot was in La Daille which was about 5min by free bus from tons centre but next to ski lift so perfect for family.

Only negative comment is that hotel needs refurbishing. Our shower curtain was torn, but room and bathroom were clean.

The young staff were really friendly and helpful. Rep was good and we did arrange paragliding through Becky which was amazing.

Overall, I would use Ski total again and would come back here. Hotel I would say 3 star but food and service 5 star.
