A modern museum that mixes a very good collection of local Roman finds with full scale reproduction items and helpful models. Very well laid out with a mixture of inside and outside exhibits. Bonus is that the museum is free on Thursdays

I especially liked the museum, which is located on the archaeological site. It displays findings from the site and nearby sites to explain you the Roman history of the city of Vienne. This is done in a didactical and original way, not only providing insight in the Roman society, but also providing insight in the archaeological research and the uncertainties which are involved. Overall I found the museum refreshing and not dull at all. The museum holds an impressive collection of mosaics.
Certainly a recommendation.

While staying with family in Lyon at Easter, we fancied a day out in the pleasant sunshine, and went to the Musee Gallo Romain at St Romain en Gal, Vienne. We were very pleasantly surprised by the extent of the site and what there was to see, compared with many archaeological attractions we have visited in the past. It was amazing to walk down the wide streets of this bustling Roman trading post. There is a distinct emphasis on drains and toilets, which always entertains the kids.

The portable audio guides are a good idea but the English version at least was a missed opportunity, doing little to fire the imagination. The kids version was more exciting, based around a storyline, but unfortunately there was no English version for our son.

The museum itself was very interesting with some excellent interpretive models of how the rich merchants' houses would have looked in their full glory, with their inner courtyards and flamboyant use of water and exotic gardens. The mosaics in particular were very impressive.

And don't miss lunch at the attached L'Entre Deux restaurant - very good food on the terrasse overlooking the river. No menu of the day at weekend so not cheap but fish dishes were particularly good and fruit kebabs with chocolate fondue was divine. Waitress was exceptionally friendly for France.

A great day out from Lyon, we easily spent the whole afternoon here.

I have travelled in and around this part of France for many years, but had not visited the gallo-romaine museum and site at St Romain-en-Gal until November this year, 2008. This can be explained by the fact that this wonderful site does not appear to be well publicized

The museum is one of the best of its kind that I have ever visited. The museum building itself is architecturally impressive and enables the amazing exhibits to be shown off to their best advantage.

The museum staff were welcoming and well informed and, as a bonus, English speaking.

English audio guides for the museum and archeological site are available free of charge. These guides, not only describe the exhibits but bring to life the society and trade of this important city of the Roman Empire in France.

An added bonus to the marvels of the museum and site is the restaurant, L'Entre Deux, we had lunch there between visting the museum and the site. this restaurant is comfortable with good service and good food at reasonable prices.
