Great expectations after reading about the Schwartzwaldstube and hotel Traube Tonbach for years. The hotel is a strange combination of additions over the years, with no consistent style and the interior decoration bordering on tasteless more than tasteful. The whole hotel is getting very tired, even in the newer areas...carpets dirty and worn, cheap woodwork in the rooms and bathrooms getting very long in the tooth. All this at prices rivaling Paris and Rome. We stayed at the Adlon in Berlin a few days before and the contrast is enormous and at half the price. To add insult to injury, they only accept cash or EC bank cards for payment...what century are they in.
The positives....the staff was super friendly and engaged in giving good service. The food and service in the Schwartzwaldstube was super...the interior heavy, dated and worn, which made the prices seem a bit over the top. The pool and sauna area was very good, but already showing cracks and wear that indicate less than first class construction.
All in all, this is not a location that deserves a 5 star rating and given that it is a monster hotel, there are crowds at all times. We will not return.More
