“characterful and comfortable, in a lovely area”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

We drove right past as the signage might be better, but came back to find an ample car park and a flower-bedecked hotel frontage that immediately charmed us. We spent a couple of nights here en route south, and wished we had longer. The glorious weather helped, of course, but the commodious accommodation was comfortable, including the cool shady verandah that proved very welcome on a warm summer evening. We ate at the hotel and were not disappointed; excellent breakfast, superb salads, delicious meat dishes and very pleasant local wines to try. Our only problem was in translation, and fortunately some of the staff speak good English. Located in a small village, the hotel is ideal for accessing Freiburg and for exploring the southern Black Forest by car. Well worth a longer stay, and highly recommended.

We only stayed here one night and opted to stay outside Freiburg and were delighted to find this hotel.
The hotel is in a lovely quiet village a short distance outside Freiburg and very close to the Black Forest. After we checked in we walked a mile up the road from the hotel in delightful, beautiful countryside - working up an appetite for supper.
The restaurant serves excellent food and drink and the staff were very friendly. The menu was entirely in German and we were struggling to translate with a limited phrase book but the waitress helpfully explained what we were ordering. Judging by the number of locals eating there, it has a good reputation.
The rooms are comfortable and very peaceful with almost no passing traffic.
There is ample free parking outside but completely unprompted, we were offered a garage to park our bikes if we didn't want to leave them on the back of the car which was very thoughtful.
Breakfast was excellent and at 5 € was incredible value with a wide range of traditional continental items including cereal, pastries and tea/coffee plus cheese, meats, fruit, yogurt plus bacon and egg. Definitely a breakfast to set you up for a day's walking!
We would recommend this hotel and would happily return for a longer stay in the future.

We have just spent a week here, visiting our daughter who is studying at Freiburg university. It is in a lovely quiet village very close to the Black Forest. The rooms are quite spacious (we had an end one) and the showers are great, with plenty of hot water. We don't speak German, although our two sons speak it a little and were staying with us. The staff were reasonably friendly and their slightly better English made up for our deficiencies. Breakfast was very good with a wide variety of continental items on offer; cheese, meats, fruit, yogurt, but also several mornings there was bacon and egg as well. I had heard that German bread was not all that nice, being hard and black, but found quite the contrary - plenty of choice and some wonderful grain breads. A nice touch was the fruit and cake left in reception, free to anyone who wished to partake during the day. Also a bottle of water in the rooms was replaced several times during the week. We ate once at the restaurant and the food was excellent, though fairly pricey.
On one occasion the maid had forgotten to replace the towels in our bathroom but when we mentioned this at reception our hosts were most apologetic and the problem was rectified immediately - in fact the next day and on our departure we were presented with bottles of wine as an apology! We felt slightly embarrassed as this seemed over-the-top, considering the minor nature of the problem we had - however it was a very kind gesture and we graciously accepted.
We hired a car for the week as we planned on doing a fair bit of sightseeing and there was free parking at the hotel and we had no difficulty finding parking places in Freiburg itself - though again, these were not cheap - approximately £1.80 (equivalent) per hour. We did notice that buses seemed to pass the hotel quite frequently.

My wife and I spent our Christmas Holiday at Hotel zum Kreuz. It was a nice large corner room with a balcony. Although the bed was a bit to hard for us and the pillows were thin and flat. We enjoyed our stay there. It was quite and the staff were very courteous and friendly. The Hotel Restaurant is renowned for it's wonderful dishes offered. I would suggest making reservations in advance, the locals frequent the restaurant and it is always a full house. The meals are absolutely wonderfully prepared and presented. It was one of the highlights of our stay!

If the Hotel would have had a mini refrigerator, that would have been a big plus. I would still whole heartedly recommend this hotel. Great Location on the edge of Freiburg, great accommodating staff. We really enjoyed the breakfast they offered and it has very nice breakfast room.

Room Tip: Corner rooms with balcony are quite and large.

we booked three overnight stops on our 4 day discovery of der schwartzwald.en route to Tuscany.
We like to stay out of the larger towns and in this respect the hotel was ideal-just a 15 min drive to Freiburg. Room was clean and comfortable and the restaurant ( in separate building opposite) was great. In fact we had the best` trout in almonds` dish ever... freshly caught fish from the stream by the hotel. Highly recommended

We stayed here for just one night, but could happily have stayed longer. We arrived (on a Saturday night) later than planned after a long drive from Italy; the staff made us most welcome and found us a place in what was obviously a very popular restaurant. No check-in formalities at all!

Our room was of fair size with "together" twin beds. it was well-designed, with good lighting and attention to detail. There was a balcony (although not much of a view!); the bathroom was fine.

Our meal was most enjoyable. We had two different soups, followed by two varieties of pan-fried trout. One of us had an ice cream with raspberries and raspberry sauce, which was yummy. The wine and the coffee were very good. Not cheap (€82.50 for that lot), but probably par for the course - and the number of local diners seems testament to the resto's value-for-money. The place seemed very traditional, with lots of wood panelling and waitresses in Trachtenmode.

At the end of the meal the chef/owner (or at least one of the Familie Hug who have owned the place for 125 years) came to check that everything was OK and told us more about the hotel's history. Obviously very proud of the place and keen to please his customers.

Breakfast the following morning (in the hotel, not the restaurant) was typically German small-hotel - a few hot items but mostly cold cuts etc. Coffee (from a push-button machine) could have been better, but that's our only criticism.

There were obviously good public transport links to Freiburg (bus stop right outside hotel), and the famous Höhlental (Hell Valley!) is immediately to the east, plus the delights of the Black Forest.

We now plan to return next year, and stay a little longer.

Stayed for one night passing through in Aug 2013. Surprisingly very, very good, better than we thought.

The room was large, had a balcony, very new bathroom which was well appointed. The all important wifi was fast and easy to connect to. Parking was plentiful but some of the spaces were a bit small if you have a larger car so pick carefully.

Breakfast was also very good with excellent coffee, selection of breads, meats, fruit, yogurts, etc.

Service was superb, all the staff spoke excellent English and gave a great recommendation for an evening out in the next town. (The hotel is in Kappel which is a very small quiet sleepy village).

Will definitely stay again and spend more time exploring the area.
