The Black Forest Hostel
Reviewed 16 November 2011

This hostel is a converted old factory, so it has large lounge area with table tennis etc. It has a large kitchen which anyone can use. The whole hostel is very clean. Has a slightly hippie feel to it. We were in an 8 bed dorm but it did not have a crowded feel to it. There is a vineyard behind the hostel and is only walking distance from the city. Staff were nice and helpful, however the hostels was not the best place to meet people.

I'd probably have loved this place at 19. However 15 years later the dirty, noisy accommodation, late night disturbances and uncomfortably tiny private room, along with a half hour wait for check in, have left me with no particularly positive memories of my stay. We'd booked for three nights but unapologetically (although with an offer to help find an alternative) having lost the last nights' booking we were very glad to leave. Note that the charged for linens do not include towels - or at least they weren't on offer. Parking is also not available despite description on Hostelworld. Freiburg is beautiful but I think there are better ways to see it and definitely at better value than 58 euro per night for a barely adequate private room.

The Black Forest Hostel is a great place to stay. Clean, beautiful and really really close to the city center. The staff is friendly and helpful and always willing to make your stay better. there is a kitchen and a fridge, which everyone can use in a charming surrounding. the living room is very big and nice. there are 2 internet stations. it is open til 1 o clock but you can get a key to get in later. there is a doorkeeper for emergencies. I stayed here with my sister last summer for one night and came back this year with my mother, who ( thinking of higher standarts :P ) was also very pleased with the hostel :D we will come back.

My girlfriend and I stayed in the Blackforest Hostel 21-Dorm for 2 nights and loved it. The rooms were very spacious, especially for a 21-bed dorm. All the beds are single deck and there are spaces to put our accessories. On top of that there is a room of lockers for added security.

The common area is also very big and has lots of facilities. There is a table-tennis table, cushioned areas with books and board games and a decent sized kitchen. The staff were very friendly and helpful - one of them even took us on a orientation tour around the hostel. Good service! The toilets are clean and interesting as they resemble space-shuttles. They even added new installations to make it look more hotel-like.

Bravo to this wonderful hostel!

It's cheap, a bit of a walk from the train station though, but located near the historic area of Freiburg. Not sure about the safety and security in the place but there's enough people around for it to be relatively safe. We were only there to sleep so didn't really run into many people. Stayed in private double rooms which were ok, shared showers without a lot of privacy, not the cleanest place in the world. Charge for Internet access but they have computers in the lobby, game room, and kitchen.

The Black Forest Hostel is close to the city center (10 min walking); behind the structure there is a brook, and if you go sleeping in the 20 beds room in summer, with open window, the only noise you will ear will be a relaxing sound of water! There is a great restroom, with a piano, tennis table, sofas, and a good kitchen. It's full of students looking for an apartment (Freiburg is a University town). The style is a bit freak, but with some funny details i liked very much! If you are backpacking it will be a nice stay! You will have the chance to get new friends too!

Eccentric and fairly friendly, but I didn't feel particularly safe leaving any valuables there even in their not-so-clean lockers. I stayed in the 21-bed room, which smelled funny and also had me a bit worried because none of the bedroom doors have locks on them. There is no free internet access, and I definitely felt like I was in a hostel with a bunch of strangers rather than an intimate, well taken care of place. It was not the cleanest place, and extremely basic.
