We wanted a hotel near the old part of Freiburg to savour the medieval and middle ages historical character of the city. The Kreuzblume Hotel certainly fitted the bill, sitting in Konviktstrasse in the Altstatte. We were aware that there was no parking directly at the hotel, but we followed the sat-nav up the hill from the river after navigating from the autobahn to the centre.
Admittedly when we turned up a narrow side spur to drive right into a multi-storey car park we feared that we we were lost. Exiting from the car park via the pedestrian route however, we were right on Konviktstrasse and the hotel was on the narrow pedestrian cobbled street on our left.

Our arrival was a little later than expected and with it being a small hotel we were not sure if anyone would be on the reception. A lady stayed behind to show us our rooms however and we were pleasantly surprised with the fresh and modern outlook of the décor and spotlessly clean. Our daughter’s settled for the larger room on the middle floor and we were on the top floor. Both rooms had windows opening onto the narrow quaint street with trailing vines extending across to opposite properties.
The tea and coffee facilities in the room was supplemented by some fresh milk from the evening staff upon request.. Most welcome.

We ventured out that evening to eat elsewhere, but the morning continental breakfast in the restaurant dining room was varied and plentiful.

It would be doing the hotel an injustice not to mention the splendidly comfortable beds. We mentioned this in the morning and found out that they were specifically sourced, with box spring, feather and memory mattresses on a sprung bed to ensure the best night’s sleep for guests…. Excellent, quality night’s sleep. 

Would certainly recommend staying at the Kreuzblume. Value for money and within the beautiful old town with all of the old world charm expected in the Black Forest area.

Booked short-notice with my wife based on tripadvisor comments. The young owner-manager was extremely professional, efficient and very welcoming. Though young he has much experience in international hotels and it shows in that he knows what he is doing. We hadn't arranged for an additional bed but he quickly shifted around rooms and a comfortable extra bed was arranged promptly. The room had a nice mix of old and new, and certainly was very clean. It's not very big but perfectly sufficient. We had a very good sleep in the comfortable bed with the window open - it faced the back so was reasonably quiet. It's not a big hotel but that gives it a special charm. Breakfast was pleasant with the owner having set a table for us personally and a buffet with good choices for a small hotel. The hotel is right next to the main "Altstadt" and everything is in close walking distance. Parking is convenient at the nearby Schlossgarten garage and the hotel provides a coupon for EUR10/day that helps defray costs. The free wifi was a bit finicky as it repeatedly disconnected, but not a big issue. We definitely will stay again!

Room Tip: Probably a room facing the back is better to avoid street noise. Ours was facing the back and we slept very well.

The hotel is right on the edge of the old town, which is very convenient if you drive to Freiburg as I did because you can park your car at the underground lot and come out to the surface some 30 meters from the hotel so your bags don't have the time to get too heavy. You can't get lost as the hotel owner sent you an e-mail the day before and then called you to give you the directions.
Our room was small, but so is the old town. The bed was soft, as is the local accent. The furniture was simple, wooden and probably made by the carpenter who lives next door. The breakfast was simple again (perhaps too simple), but by breakfast time you no longer care as the night before you walked all around the charming town, dined at a romantic restaurant, put your tired feet into the rivulets with cold water running along the cobblestone streets, and then walked around the quiet town again trying to find the famous Schwarzwalderkirschtorte (with no success, so we'll have to come back).
Is it a great modern hotel with a spa and large well-stocked bathrooms? no. It does not have porters, so the owner himself helps you carry your bags upstairs and you are at a loss whether you can tip him: after all, he is the owner (in fact, one of the Dutch/German owner threesome). And the hotel does not have minibars, safeboxes, or air-conditioning. But remember? your Granny's old country cottage did not have all those things either, and you did not mind as a child. So that's what this hotel is: a friendly and intimate place run by warm and friendly people. Can you do without a spa, for a change?

A small, family run hotel in the old town. Perfectly located and nice, modern rooms (although no air con). The staff genuinely care, as it is their business, and we really felt at home. The street is quiet, the beds comfortable and so you get a good nights sleep (although, as with many similar towns, the church bells can be heard). Coupled with a fantastic restaurant, I would highly recommend this hotel.

I read the reviews for this hotel before booking. Thought it would be a nice place in the old part of town. We stayed for a few days in June and weren't impressed. The area was nice, but the room was very average. I felt like I was staying at a relative's house, and just had to put up with the mediocre accommodations. Unfortunately this place was not free, like a relatives house would be, so we cut our stay short to stay somewhere else.

The hallways were dark and gloomy, the room was small and dingy, the chair in the room was broken, the bathroom was tiny and cramped and overall not a very nice place. Didn't even bother with the restaurant, because I wasn't impressed with the hotel. Very disappointing experience for a once in a lifetime trip. I'm glad we went somewhere else, and will never be back to this hotel.

The city of Freiburg was an incredible place. Full of cute shops and nice people. Lots of history here, and a pleasant environment for a vacation in the Black Forest. Apart from the hotel, we had a fabulous time.

Room Tip: Find a room in another hotel
